It's refreshing to hear a solid, reasonable anti-religion argument as opposed to the all too common atheist banner waving "debates" over the existence of god
ALL religious people pick and choose what they take out of their "holy" books. If you only take the good stuff, you have no argument from me. If you use your religion to try to treat others as second or third class citizens, you'll have a fight on your hands.
Nicely done and lovely images toward the end of the video as well! I do concur that WE Atheists should speak out and be heard and even get-together and grow as a community!!
at 4:40, i go past a billboard just like that every time i go to my karate practice, and it always makes me laugh that people believe that stuff enough to put it on a billboard.
Another great video. In a way you are to philosophy what AronRa is to biology. A relentless delivery of fact and logical reasoning. No frippery. Bang, bang, bang.
Oh, and some great subliminal references. How many people who saw this spotted the ducks and thought "imprinting?"
This may be considered to be outlandish but in my opinion all religious followers are complicit in every single atrocity committed in their name. That's "all religions" without your foundation the extremists could not even try to justify what they do. You, the religious are complicit in every single murder in your name.
I believe that religion has brought great love, art & beauty to the world too by striving to empathize and embrace others.
I believe it's an individual's passion for what they believe that can become unbalanced, self absorbed and manifest as a mission to reform everyone because they see others as lacking something that they believe they should have and something they should be, both religious and atheist alike. Be at peace...and live.
I think that if religion somehow disappered today, someone would invent it again tomorrow.
People who do "bad things" will do them regardless of what justifications they use.
And that's not adressing the question of how to get rid of religion. Do we make it illegal? What other beliefs and ideas should be made illegal for the common good?
No, we don't make it illegal. We run down every bad idea and eviscerate it... we persist in pointing out that a delusion is a delusion, we have open talks in which fallacious reasoning and bad facts are rejected loudly and forcefully. We practice what Harris calls "conversational intolerance."
Will it end the world's problems? No. But it will take away people's intellectual and ethical crutches and force them to stand on their own. "You did X; now YOU will account for it."
Hey ratman, look up Daneil Everett's work with the Pirahã of South America. According to him, they have no superstition, no religious beliefs, and don't subscribe to the idea of magic at all. Perhaps we could develop a similar culture.
People are going to do what they want, with or without religion. As it would be wise to Look at the person behind the gun, behind the weapon, it would be wise to observe the people behind their religious beliefs. You can't blame their God for their deeds.
That depends on the deed. The German people were overwhelmingly Christian in 1940... I don't lay the blame for what was happening at that time at religions door one little bit; not a jot (though I mention this fact when people speak of the restraining power of religion). However, when they mutilate their child's genitalia or stone to death a rape victim or hang a homosexual... this I lay, in part, on God's door. He is the cause of some and the defense of others; point being, he's relevant.
"..I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again?"
2 Peter 3:3-4
"But you, Daniel, keep this prophecy a secret; seal up the book until the time of the end, when many will rush here and there, and knowledge will increase. Daniel 12:4
"And the Good News about the Kingdom will be preached throughout the whole world, ... then the end will come." Matt 24:14
He also said that his Kingdom would come while many in attendance at his crucifixion had not tasted death... why didn't you paste that one in? You know, the one where he says he'll return within a generation or two?
Matthew 10:34 -I come not to bring peace, but to bring a sword.
Luke 22:36 -He said to them, But now if you have a purse, take it and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
Revelation 2:22-23 -So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead.
i don't get it. but at least you're reading the Bible. Jesus is coming soon. Sooner than you think.
My point is your 66 books contradict, starting with genesis. I was forced to read them and I studied many religions. Would a teen Mary fear punishment for indiscretions involving Tiberius Pantera or Josef? Why did Josephus Flavius mention Hercules? Why would Pontius Pilate be involved when punishment for blaspheme was stoning? Prove it and do you desire "the end"?
If cause and effect is a flawless science then answer this. We are the created. Because there's no explanation for why there should be anything. So if there is anything, what put it here? A creator. At least one. Now if you say it just happened, how come that's not an acceptable legal defense for events in court? How did she die? It just happened. Why aren't explosions explained with "it just happened". Jesus is coming back soon. Read Matthew 24. Get ready, the tribulation begins with the treaty
Cause and effect isn't a science; it's an inference from a lifetime of experience and you find it to be as inescapable as the rest of us. If you doubt me, fire a bullet at your head and ask God to suspend causation in order to permit you to live.
How did God happen? Oh, did HE just happen? Oh, has he ALWAYS existed? Well, why not the universe?
Slightly off track... but why are so many people convinced of when jesus is supposed to come back... I thought the bible said he was supposed to "come as a thief in the night" (1 Thessalonians 5:2) to me that means NO ONE KNOWS...just saying
Here's some good reasoning that got us off track. The earth is flat. They were sure of it. The earth is the center of the universe. Totally confident. Global warming. Nope, just another pattern of climate change. Macro evolution. No proof. Never been recreated in a lab. All evidence is actually conjecture. All bones used to illustrate were made in a lab as a visual aid. Why don't we have half man/half monkeys? What caused the big bang? Why hasn't there been another one? Logic misleads everyone.
You have apparently never bothered to look into what evolutionary theory is. Listen, if you'd like to not sound ignorant of something about which you'd like to talk, get your information from a secular source. Listening to your pastor butcher what science actually has to say on a subject is no substitute for an education. "Half/man monkeys..." have you ever read a thing on the subject? Pathetic.
No one knows the origin of life or the universe. Even the big bang is just a guess, and is not understood what caused it. It is only an explanation of the Universe, same with god.
Religion is bullshit, hands down, does not follow reason or logic. God is a possibility still, but it is no more than an idea, same as the big bang, just an explanation of the unknown.
All religion is bullshit, most christians don't even believe in hell anymore, even the really upper rank ones.
You said of the Big Bang: "It is only an explanation of the Universe, same with god."
Nevermind the fact that you didn't qualify this, the Big Bang is not an explanation of the Universe, it is an event to which the evidence points. That's it. To my knowledge we have no reason to think it all began there. The first few minutes after the big band are mystery because of the absence of a Grand Unified Theory. They are not explanations of the same things and ONE of them is reasonable.
The bible is inherently bigoted, divisive, and hate-filled. As of 2007, there were over two dozen religiously based wars/conflicts in the world. That alone speaks volumes of the rabidly divisive nature of theism. Most of the instructions we receive as children remain with us for life -- the church has known this well. Many therefore cannot reason themselves out of something that they never reasoned themselves into in the first place. This goes for their religious indoctrination as well as...
the bigotry that comes along with it. The hateful Prop 8 in CA. was put forth and financially supported solely by various Christian organizations/churches. Perhaps millions of us have been sentenced to suffer/die from disease because bible thumpers successfully stalled stem cell research for nearly a decade, just as they've hampered all human progress throughout recorded history. They've come far too close in their publicly stated goal of replacing our secular government with a...
Christian theocracy, and the constitution with the bible. They continue to want to deprive us of individual freedoms and liberties by forcing us to live as the so-called "godly" alone decide we MUST live. These terrible things and more come as a direct result of our self-imposed silence of opposition in regard to religion since the end of WWII. No more! Some say I should respect this mind poison of superstition that over the last 2+ decades has suddenly thrust my nation backward toward...
the dark middle ages with its anti-intellectual, anti-science, and anti-human ignorance. No, there's nothing about religious opinions that entitles them to any more respect than any other opinions might get. In fact, I think silly and crazy opinions, such as those which emanate from the incomprehensible tripe of the bible deserve quite the contrary. I am an atheist activist and anti-theist, and shall oppose all theistic religions -- these scourges of humanity -- with all the vigor within me!
RobTheMonk8, great video. As usual, you articulate your rationale for why you believe what you believe superbly. If anyone wants to get a well articulated summarization of Sam Harris' "The End of Faith, they should look no further than this video. It spells out, quite lucidly, the reasons why religion can no longer be granted sacrosanct status -sheltered from the criticism that all other beliefs in our world are subject to. Your masterful explanation of this thesis is truly inspiring. Thank you.
Spot on. All the reasons I type away on my keyboard in the effort of educating the delusional herd members to the truth. Nicely rendered and spoken. I dream of a world that exists without the religious bigotry, misogyny, hatred, war-mongering, science-bashing, ignorance and ridiculousness.
Great video! As long as there are those who choose to use their religon to hold back humanitie's progress, then we must continuously counter the idiocy.
As you said, when religon becomes a strictly private affair, only THEN can we live and let live.
An excellent video, well presented and in total alignment with my thoughts on religion.
All those people who quietly go to church/synagogue/mosque and worship their god are not a problem.
It is the evangelistic who tell me I'm going to hell, and use other terror tactics to coerce the weak minded into belief of hell rather than belief of a god.
The use of terror tactics robs people of their free will, preying, as it does, on their fears rather than their hopes, that is no way to recruit followers
I would contend that, further, many of the people who quietly go to holy-place-of-choice are the ones who voted in favor of Proposition 8, voted for representatives who denied federal funding of Stem Cell research etc... I have a serious problem with religious values creeping into the election, and so, when I can, I address religion as a whole.
Fair point, but you'll never stop bias affecting peoples political views, if you remove religion some other bias will affect their viewpoint. At what point do you stop this becoming a dictatorial process. The communist states have tried to outlaw religion, but that only strengthens their resolve and makes them appear as martyrs.
The closest analogy in America would be prohibition, it didn't work, and state control will never work.
what other bias? this video did a good job at explaining why religion serves as a root excuse for many biases, where reason and our chance to live our one life doesn't
He is not indorsing state worship. lol comunism is state worship it was never a athiest thing. Stalin try to make communism into a religion becuase they knew how blind people are and can be more easily control when they worship something.
This is criminally under-viewed

Christians have been saying "Jesus is coming back" for over 2000 years.
Either his time-keeping sucks... he's decided to duck out, or he doesn't exist.
Either way, you'd have to be an idiot to live your life around his possible return.

I don't think they're on equal footing at all. The big bang is an idea derived from observations and careful reasoning.
RobTheMonk8 2 years ago
I never said equal footing. Religion is arrogant in saying they know, this is fact with no logical evidence.
Science says we don't know but here is a theory that is supported by evidence, including background microwave radiation, and many others.
Theories of this scale change over time as new scientific evidence is found. The big bang is a plausible theory, not fact.
More evidence in the future may put another theory ahead, or prove big bang further.
We don't know, religion doesn't know.
