@taxingjiant he wasn't protecting his home, he was trying to get the guard's keys. he was playing! Zoo keepers interact with the animals nearly constantly and they form bonds. They like to play. Summersaulting is not 'protecting'. You can see the guard shake the keys for a brief second near the beginning. The Red panda liked the sound of them (sorta like a baby likes a rattle).

for those who are confused: "Panda" came from the Nepalese word Poonya which means "eater of Bamboo". In fact the word Panda was first used for the Red Panda even before the Giant Panda was discovered! Although the Giant Panda and Red Panda are not really closely related, they both love to eat bamboo, so they both deserve that name! :D

they are not related to the giant panda at all. interestingly enough, they are actually the only species in their genus ailuridae. "ailurus fulgens"

Actually, they have not only their own genus, but their own family (Ailuridae) which is part of 'Musteloidea' along skunks, racoons and weasels.

It's just a common name, they're closer to racoons as you correctly noticed. Look in wikipedia for "Caniformia" and there you can see how they are related to other animals ;)

Got this animal for a HW assignment in school, here are some facts ;) Red Pandas live in China, the mountains of Nepal, and northern Myanmar (Berma) They eat bamboo, fruit, acorns, roots, and bird eggs... red panda's are an endangered species and are also nocturnal and very active during nighttime. Hope this helped anyone... i want a red panda now!!! xD
