ok but what if the oil overflows the underwater pyramid? The Oil flows at such forces that it can break metal. Something tells me there will never be enough force from the pump pulling oil up to into the boat to contain the oil within the underwater pyramid. Is this not a major concern?

Some equipment on board of the ship could be Tricanters from flottweg technologies that separate slurries. Just as we design on a Engineering proyect to separate water with petroleum recovery. Other equipment advise is a nut filter excelet separate oil from congenit water.

A new top hat device needs to be quickly built that would use hydraulically engaged dogs to the existing flange thus locking and sealing the device firmly to the structure.

that would IMO gather too much seawater to be viable. im not an expert so please correct me if im wrong. they are using pressure from the well itself to help get the oil to the ship. pressure is required in order to allow the oil to make the long trip up the pipe. there would not be many if any pumps that could "drag" oil that far. i would say there would be too much water/crude mixture to try and filter. it would likely take months to try and engineer such a system to work for this application

Has anyone suggested about using large weather balloons as a bladder to collect the oil? With a pipe inside, it can be siphoned out to a tanker.

Well, everyone was expecting the problem to be fixed, weeks went by and its still going. The leak could have been fixed in the beginning, but BP was more interested in collecting oil than they were to fixing it.
