Use a kinetic bullet puller pull it apart their about twenty bucks, but that problem is not from storage it happened to me once when I forgot to adjust my bullet seating die I had it screwed way down to much for FMJ bullets, wadcutters will be seated way down like that
yea..putting ammo in a plastic bag wont do that. Alot of companies ship and sell ammo in "loose pack" BVAC, MBI, alot of bulk 5.56 is loosepack. It takes a crapload of pressure to do that to a bullet..I call factory defect and you just missed it. Unless you shoved em in a full ammo can and forced it shut
too much pressure=exploded gun. this round wasnt crimped or wasnt crimped good enough. lol dont buy reloads from people, only use your own reloads. theres always a chance of something like this happenning or a double harged load which i have done several times by accident, but i always catch it because i double check my shells before i load the bullets.
stick it in a vice and hit it with a hammer lol kind of a low-rent way to get +Ps. i'd bet a bad crimp,or it's a new zip gun rd,or the new 9mm half battery from zig-zag
shoud store in the box this plastic is dangeours (i felt) cause u never know what will happen u know when a bullet hits the firring cap or somthing LOL
what kind of force would that take, a lot is my guess and i don't think those 9mm bullets even if violently shaken could over seat the bullet. i have hunted and shot for 15 years and i have been rough on ammo and never seen one do that unless it was already that way from the fac
srr but you're wrong sir. this is clearly not from storage. this is a loading error. here in belgium people get fired over stupid shit like that. but if you won't believe me, how come this is the only one that got jacked up in the bag? that fact alone kinda speaks for itself doesn't it? grts
@brandond1997 With the .22lr's that I've seen, the bullet narrows at the bottom and has an over-hang, the narrow part goes into the shell and the top of the shell is then crimped to hold the bullet in. The over-hang on the bullet prevents it from being squashed into the shell any further down than it already is.
sorry. please do not read this. you will die in seven days if you don't post this comment on 10 videos in the next hour. if you do, tomorrow will be the best day of your life
If the ammo were high quality, there should have been no way to setback the bullet like that just by storing it in a ziplock bag. I think this speaks more towards the ammo manufacturer than the way to store your ammo.
funny i can get a box of 1000 .22 in just loose in a 6x6x6 box. not iduvigualy raped and sectioned off just loose like in his bag here.well im not buying that brand anymore
@Bassman018 well i had a box of .44 and thery were induvidualy sectioned like regular bullets and the bullets were shrink wraped to keep the air and water out
HPR is overpriced to start...then throw in shipping. Several channels got a bunch free so good for them, I am not paying for it when I can get better alternatives locally for less money locally.
I cant see carrying ammo that way would seat that bullet that far down. I used to cycle the same round in and out of my carry gun every day and it never sat that far down. For pulling bullets apart get a kinetic bullet puller. there are about $25. looks like a plastic ball peen hammer. I used to use them with I worked for a comercial ammo reloader. Hope that helps some.
you go into the smallest details in all your vids and go to the extra effort to show us (jewlers magnifing glass) it really keeps me comin back to these
GREAT video Jeff. I always store my ammo in the original boxes. It takes up more space but it works. I have ammo that is over 25 years old and it still fires fine. I see a lot of people store ammo like that so this video is great info.! Thanks!
@GATORFOOT166 ...as much as he seems to be into shooting, I don't know why he doesn't get into reloading as well. Not only can you make cheaper ammo, you can make better ammo.
To clarify my last point. By case "rim" I mean the mouth. The edge of the case mouth is what actually stops the round from going too far into the chamber. If you crimp the edge into the bullet, bad things can happen. You'll notice your revolver rounds ARE crimped. The bullet has a little groove around its circumference called a cannelure that you crimp the edge into. This is necessary because the recoil on a magnum round can knock bullets loose in the cylinder if they weren't crimped.
FYI : Most auto pistol rounds like the 9mm, 45ACP and others headspace on the case rim and thus do not have any crimp. That's why carrying your ammo loose in a baggie is not a good idea.
@Thin447Line I use a Lee taper crimp die on all semiauto handloads. It puts a good crimp in place but leaves enough case mouth exsposed to headspace on.
@klesmer ...yes I know about the taper crimp. However, since most bullets you would use do not have a cannelure to crimp into, you have to be careful not to make the bullet so tight that it increases pressure beyond safe levels.
you should be able to take a round like this to the gun shop and put it in a special bin for live rounds that are either faulty or just redundant. just as a way to dispose of live rounds properly
Hey Jeff, There is a Bullet Removal Tool for this. It looks kind of like a hammer, where you put the cartridge in one end and lock it in, then hit the tool on a hard surface and the bullet will get thrown out of the casing. I would say this would be the safest way to do this since thats what the tool is made for.
TBH id like to think anyone who has the responsability of owning a gun would take the resposability to check rounds and where they are firing etc. Its a killing machine after all.
A little advice from a person who reloads my own ammo....Keep your ammo in the box. If you reload, get the appropriate ammo box. Also, for "making bullets safe" I would get a kinetic bullet puller. It looks like a clear plastic hammer and you can find it in the reloading section at the sporting goods store. Trying to pry something like that apart with pliers would make me nervous.
be sure to measure the round BEFORE and AFTER to see if the OAL changes. there's a lot of force on the tip of a bullet during cycling. make sure to be safe and NOT milk the slide. if something changes its HPR quality control
could be a quality control problem from hpr. Ive reloaded a little bit and one thing you look for is case mouth tension on the bullet. if its too loose then hpr belled the mouth too much before seating. unless they do some kind of crimping after seating, thats my guess. perhaps you should test the case mouth tension on a handful of rounds by loading them up in a mag, then cycle them thru manually by pulling the slide forcefully.
Great piece of information, I've always kepy my rounds in the box they came in, but just incase something like that SHOULD happen, i know what to look out for, thanks!
Thanks for the observational vid. I personally never store ammo in bags. Too many things happen like this. Plus I also use jacketed soft points. They don't last long bouncing around in a bag. Besides it's cheap to go and buy some plastic ammo containers, ones with rubber seals even. To store over longer periods or for trips to the range.
all the steel cased wolf .223 i bought this summer rusted up even being stored in millitary ammo cans with silica gel packets and jams every two shoots in my AR15 :(
If you are really concerned about setback or other potential problems, consider investing in a bullet puller. I've used one of these and they do the job. I've never had a damaged case from one, and they collect the powder and bullet in the tool itself so there is no danger of spilling. Very handy for shooting reloads (from anyone).
Man, I am bummed out. I kept waiting and waiting for the good stuff and nothing happened. Then I realized it was Bullets Gone Bad, not Bullets Gone Wild then I felt silly. I was always curious why you would take your ammo out of a well organized container where the ammo is protected and easily accounted for and stick it in a plastic bag. I would think to put it in a better container, not worse. To each his own. Devil Dog out.
I'm going to say the problem comes from the person reloading.
What you have there is bullet set back. Caused by improper case sizing
or crimping. This can also occur when a round has been chamber many times.
Repeated chambering will cause the bullet to set back when the bullet contacts the feed ramp. I'd chamber a few or those "reloads" and see if I'm getting any "set back". Bullet set back DOES cause higher chamber pressures.
@cutlerylover if you freeze the round it stops the powder from firing. put the bad round in the freezer for a day or two before you disassemble it. better to be safe then sorry
I store quite a bit of my ammunition in bags like this, and have never found a bullet like that. but this video does give me more motive to double check as im loading mags and guns for now on. thanks for the info.
Do you think that was because it was a reload or does that matter. I just bought some gear pods to bring my ammo to the range. Based on this vid. i am rethinking that strategy.
you have must have really smacked the round to to lodge the bullet in the casing like that......as for soaking the round in oil, i soaked 2 rounds in wd40 for 2 weeks and they both fired.....
Yeah I zip lock my bullets and have for years. Never had this sort of a problem. Thanks for the post for all the people who don't understand the dangers involved with a live round like that.
Very interesting. Georgia Arms, one of the bigger manufacturers of ammo on the East coast, packages all of their ammo in plastic bags. I have bought ammo from them for some time and have never had a problem. But I can see how it might be a problem.
There is a hammer type device that holds a round, when you "strike" the hammer, the bullet is forced out. This is the safest way to remove the bullet from a live round.
i think it is from HPR. I have .45's that came that way from them. I think i sent you a message about it along with safearms and sootch00. HPR also saw my post and sent me a message. They say that they inspect every round?! Anyway always check your ammo period
this has happened to a friend of mine before, shooting a glock 19. after doing so, the cartridge explodes, coming off is the slide and the bullet is still shot. probably a problem with the glock, and not the bullet, but still not suggested to be tried again. he was a daredevil
Video 1000 soon eh? Didn't you say you were going to have someone spray you in the face with pepper spray for the sake of review? I mean, you do have that one that is about to expire soon right?
With shotguns, you might have a 2 3/4 chambered barrel that a 3 inch shell will fit in. But there isn't enough room for the 3 inch to open. Be careful what kind of barrel you have and what size ammo.
I once shot an AR-15 and the round exploded in the chamber when I shot it. I wasn't hurt (since it was a .22 caliber) just felt like something hit my hand. Wasn't fun :P But it was a freak thing and hasn't happened since.
Hey Jeff, try a bullet puller from Midway dot com..its a big time reloading and gun supply store here in Mo where i am from..great prices and had free s/h last time i ordered..not sure if you re-load your own ammo yet but it is fun/relaxing and helps save some bucks in the long run...the Lee challenger kit (around 100.00 way back then).. is what i started off with and comes with pretty much evthing you need..I know you have plenty of hobbies but i think you might really enjoy it..take care...dak
Instead of using pliers use a kinetic hammer its safer and they only cost about $20.00. Thanks for posting. Keep up the good work and Keep sharing the knowledge!!!
I SERIOUSLY doubt that happened from bouncing around in a bag. Neck tension should be strong enough to where you shouldn't be able to move the round deeper into the case without substantial effort (IE a press). My guess is crappy quality control at HPR and you just didn't notice it when you put it in the bag.
Well if you have ammunition like that, this could also happen, when chambering a round, when the bullet hits the feeding ramp. Sometimes this leads to a jam and sometimes the round is chambered like that. Should be safe to shoot.
@cutlerylover for taking apart the bullet you got like a kind of hammer where you put the bullet in and if you smash the hammer on something hard the bullet will get apart save but i forgot the name of the hammer
@kluis01 oh ok...this batch was the 1st batch they made, which was factory reloads, perhpas the crimping was crappy on the one round hense the issue, maybe not a storage issue at all
Use a kinetic bullet puller pull it apart their about twenty bucks, but that problem is not from storage it happened to me once when I forgot to adjust my bullet seating die I had it screwed way down to much for FMJ bullets, wadcutters will be seated way down like that

Yeah I zip lock my bullets and have for years. Never had this sort of a problem. Thanks for the post for all the people who don't understand the dangers involved with a live round like that.
grimtriggerman 1 year ago
Very interesting. Georgia Arms, one of the bigger manufacturers of ammo on the East coast, packages all of their ammo in plastic bags. I have bought ammo from them for some time and have never had a problem. But I can see how it might be a problem.

nice warning!
oromoto 1 year ago
There is a hammer type device that holds a round, when you "strike" the hammer, the bullet is forced out. This is the safest way to remove the bullet from a live round.

I know a guy who has a 60-year old .32 ACP pistol. The ammo is also decades old. Wouldn't fire that for the life of me.
DemonHide 1 year ago
You should leave descant packets in your bags of ammo also.
jokerman213 1 year ago
i think it is from HPR. I have .45's that came that way from them. I think i sent you a message about it along with safearms and sootch00. HPR also saw my post and sent me a message. They say that they inspect every round?! Anyway always check your ammo period

personally i thought you shot yourself when i read bullets gone bad
vanjangovich 1 year ago
this has happened to a friend of mine before, shooting a glock 19. after doing so, the cartridge explodes, coming off is the slide and the bullet is still shot. probably a problem with the glock, and not the bullet, but still not suggested to be tried again. he was a daredevil

Video 1000 soon eh? Didn't you say you were going to have someone spray you in the face with pepper spray for the sake of review? I mean, you do have that one that is about to expire soon right?

one good way to store ammo is to buy reusable box's for certain ammo types it is a little pricey but it works and my dad does it
dragkid185 1 year ago
You just found a new way to make .380 ammo for cheap. You just buy HPR 9mm rounds and you hit the bullet with a hammer to make it a .380 lol.
Obviously dont do that for real people.

With shotguns, you might have a 2 3/4 chambered barrel that a 3 inch shell will fit in. But there isn't enough room for the 3 inch to open. Be careful what kind of barrel you have and what size ammo.

Dont put rounds in a bag! Hmmmm why not?
jasongiddensviper478 1 year ago
I once shot an AR-15 and the round exploded in the chamber when I shot it. I wasn't hurt (since it was a .22 caliber) just felt like something hit my hand. Wasn't fun :P But it was a freak thing and hasn't happened since.
blkmagic4 1 year ago
You should record a video when you disassemble the bullet (assuming you haven't already). I'd find it interesting, personally.
MakeMeASammich 1 year ago
I just bury the bullet, it will erode to the point of no danger within a month.
But it's underground too, so even if it did somehow go off it wouldn't be dangerous.

Keep up the good work and Keep sharing the knowledge!!!
oyarrito 1 year ago
I SERIOUSLY doubt that happened from bouncing around in a bag. Neck tension should be strong enough to where you shouldn't be able to move the round deeper into the case without substantial effort (IE a press). My guess is crappy quality control at HPR and you just didn't notice it when you put it in the bag.
nitrofish420 1 year ago
Well if you have ammunition like that, this could also happen, when chambering a round, when the bullet hits the feeding ramp. Sometimes this leads to a jam and sometimes the round is chambered like that. Should be safe to shoot.
