how big do these guys get? cause i get in my backyard what looks a whole lot like yours, just wanna see if i have spotteds or something else. I live in upstate new york. (about 5 hours from the city....)
(sob, sob, sob) i had to get rid of my salamanders.i loved those two girls/boys i dont know what gender they are, but they had to be the same gender because they never mated. D; goodbye spotty and darth vader
I have a spotted salamander too. I've had him for about a year and a half now. I found him on a sidewalk and by the time I got him home he was in shock or something. He didn't eat more than one or two crickets for a month and barely did anything. We figured he would die but suddenly he got better and is going strong now. I wonder if there's any way to increase his life span...? Well, when I found him he was pretty small but he's a good 8-10 inches now.
I have no clue what would be best for mine, he has a water dish that he sits in but I don't think it's deep enough, and I don't know how to make any kind of a water area that would be easy to clean.
Any help you could give would be IMENSELY appreciated because I love my sally but there's almost no info on how to keep them anywhere.
Also, I don't know why but mine doesn't really seem to eat reptomin, how do you feed yours? I just use live food.
The "pond" is just a little glass Pyrex dish with water about a half inch deep. Doesn't need to be deep, just clean. Also a few small seashells to calcify the water in case he needs Calcium. I have about 3 inches of sphagnum in the terrarium (no regular dirt), and also some regular moss that I keep damp all the time, but if he wants more water he goes in the water dish.
I hand feed the Repto-Min (every 2-3 days) by holding it in front of his mouth & moving it - he opens his mouth & grabs it.
ur not going to get very far looking for a 'spotted salamander' i suggest researching fire salamanders and tiger salamanders first as more appropriate pets.
yah, i just found one of those today, it was about 4 1/2 inches long, i found it under a big rock in my yard, and i live in Massachusetts. I wish i had kept it, and put it in a tank, i hear they live usually 7 years in captive, but up to 20 years in the wild. Also i hear they can grow up to 9 inches long.
i just got mine from WI and its so cool

I've had one for 12 years. In terrarium with sphagnum moss and a little pond. Hand-feed ReptoMin. Never used any other food & he's very healthy.

What kind of a pond? Like how big and deep?
