Someone may have already made this comment - sorry if they have - but I'm positive I read in It Crawled From The South that the kid who asks about lyrics at the end of this clip is one of the Beastie Boys. Can't remember which one, though.
I've seen this interview a few times now and I had no clue this was a kids show! It really comes across as a relaxed looking chat show. It's a world away from the likes of Live and Kicking and SMTV here in the UK.
They we're just starting to really get alot of attention at this time so I think Peter was still his real self and having a good time at 24 or 25 years of age.
But after being in the business for so long and so many countless people wanting to be so close made him eventually slightly withdrawn.
Plus as years went by, he hated hearing his voice even more so than before.
i love R.E.M. That being said, I think it would've been tough to get close to peter as a person during this phase... he seemed like a bit of a closed off angry dude... probably a good reason for it tho
Amazing how the passage of time makes the time remembered seem pure and honest. I didn't feel pure and honest back in the day. But compared to today...
badseed 86 I guess your right it was foolish of me to criticize such a great band. altho my favorite music from rem was recorded in the 80's, Automatic for the people is a beautiful album and monster is also one of my favorite albums of all time.
WOW!!!!! All I can say is, if you are an REM fan, you need to see this interview. In this short segment, you see where the band's philosphy and how their personalities shaped their music. E X C E L L E N T !!
Great Interview thanks for posting it! My parents actually had the privilege of spending the day with Michael Stipe in 1984. He didn't say more that four complete sentences. He was a very shy guy in the 80's. When R.E.M. signed to Warner Brothers they lost all of their originality. I wish they wouldn't have given in to the label.
they gave away part of their originality [not all of it] in order to write some of the best songs that were written during the 90s...that s ok with me.
How did they give away their originality? Who else could have written Losing my religion or everybody hurts? (or indeed the albums full of beautiful, less-appreciated songs) And as has been stated a zillion times before - it's not that they lost their originality, but that other bands and musicians copied them (as is their wont)
a comment on my upload of Carnival of Sorts states: 'a little known fact....during the interview of this show, the kid that asks about where to get lyrics for R.E.M. songs is Adam Horowitz (Ad-Rock) of the Beastie Boys.'
There was talk about this before my original upload of this was taken down...Buck said that in an interview, but I don't think it looks a thing like him - I've seen pics of the guys in Beastie Boys from back then.
C'mon guys, don't you want to try a synthesizer? LOL

"Oh, you had a question. I'm sorry."
"What does REM stand for?"
I do believe the correct answer to that is Really Excellent Music.

I can not believe how similar Michael Stipe and Morrissey are. They should have got married. It would have been the greatest indie ceremony ever.
