I personally know the fighter in the black and red. He has been fighting now for about 20 years. He is still working with the other guy. Also they are doing an exhibition fight for a crowd of people. You can hear someone talking to them explaining whats going on. These guys are from Atlantia and are in the Barony of Ravens Cove. I was once a proud member of this group. I now reside in Northshield. Any who would like to see some good fights look me up. I go by the name Yoshi.
Basically you need some armour and some ratan probably 1.2metres of it for a sword (to start with as basics), the armour you can either buy or make yourself like i do and have it in the design you want which has to still be legit for the SCA
The good question is, are they having fun, Thats what truely matters in SCA. Your with your friends with a Rattan pole and you beat them. Its fun, if they have fun its all good :) At least in our shire :)

how do u explain vikings, or goths. if they entered battle they had to be built fairly well. they wouldnt be little scrawny people. brute force won field battles. brains won battles against fortifications.
Brute force was not what they used... There was alot of technique to how they fought, yes it was alot of strength involved, but they wern't just huge people that were givin an ax and someone said go kill thoughs people. They had techniques and tactics, and vikings mostly made people scared from killing non fighters, they probably wern't as good at fighting as they were at scaring people into thinking they were badass. Technique and mind will always beat brute strength...
check out deadliest warrior viking vs samuri. vikings were nothing but brute force. pillaging and burning was standard and they were trained from just about birth to kill or be killed. they were monsters. the only tactic they really used was scare tactics. they were not technical people, they were basic fighters. also they had strength in numbers so the fancyness was not a priority
also. "they weren't just huge people that were given an ax and someone said go kill those people" is the correct way to spell that. what u said just about describes vikings except sometimes it was a sword or a javelin
not many swords of that era could go through plate and even if they could there is still a layer o chain to get through as well. halberds were invented for specific purpose of killing knights in plate
In the SCA it is assumed that each fighter is wearing an iron helmet and chain mail shirt, so you don't need to hit them with the force needed to cut through plate and mail.
And some of the later suits of plate did not have mail underneath them.
i figured that much. mail was worn by smart people under their suits always because it offered extra protection. never would mail not be used under plate armor because plate has so many points of weakness and mail would help protect those places because of its flexibility
Actually, by1400's full shirts of mail were no longer being worn under the armor, just mail patches for the open spots attached to the padding underneath. By the 1500's full, head-to-toe armor made mail redundant. Check out any decent history of armor book.
And while it was no thrill being on the ground in armor, armor for war never weighed more than about 60 lbs, and was articulated well enough that one could get up if they fell down.
head to toe armor would not make mail redundant. there are pivot points such as knees, armpits elbows and such that u cannot put completely in plate or you would waddle down the field and topple over. to have a suit that u can move in there would still be exposed areas
Check out Henry the 8th's armor made for the Cloth of Gold tournament, 1520, and certain other armors made in that period. No openings in the armpits, knees, or elbows. The armorers were that good that they could make articulations that allowed the knights to move as much as they had to. These were the suits that made mail shirts redundant. Mail, if used at all, was only used as skirting or in patches for those parts that were left exposed by those suits that left parts exposed.

We actually have full out battles such as the fight you see above ranging from Duels..to a couple of people a side to over a thousand a side. We try to be as Historcially accurate as saftey allows and include cultures from all over the world. My persona in the SCA is from Japan but most are from Europe. HOpe this helps.

yes, there is a difference between Rapier & Heavy fighting, one o f the biggest differences is in Heavy fighting, you're more heavily amored than you would be in Rapier fighting & fencing is more about Finesse than heavy fighting

Blah, blah. Every SCA demo, every SCA video comment, there's some yahoo talking about how his group uses live steel, they're so much better, etc. I never see these guys fight. I even went to one of their demos. They take 2 or 3 easy, controlled swings, then adjust armor for 20 mins. 2 or 3 slow, easy shots... adjust armor. Always the same, all talk.
most of us dont ware armour a couple ware chainmail but thats it we fight full contact and you are correct about haw they fight with live steel in the usa but am from the uk and we do it properly.
I wonder, are those ratan swords still heavy at all. Every video I see them in they look incredibly light. That always makes the fights seem more frantic and tense.
Watch how the guy in red recovers after he throws a shot. He swings the sword down and around to bring it back up to guard position. This is to preserve energy over a long series of fights. If the sword was so light he wouldn't bother with a more energy-efficient recovery. Rattan is not light. Maybe it's not that heavy, but then, neither was a well made, fullered steel sword. The speed comes from technique and good body mechanics, plus some good old-fashioned muscle.

1) this is some very slow practice work, obviously with at least one of them being a noob.
2) How many of you people talking about what qualifies as "sword fighting" have actually done it, or fought with swords? 5% of you? 10%?
There is a lot of technique, maybe not in what these two particular guys are doing, but the upper level SCA fighting has a lot of technique and skill.

The only way knights were killed besides falling from horses/shot is being mauled and taken to the ground and slowly beat to death.

There is Fencing in the SCA. The main difference between the two is Armor requirements and the level of hitting.

"light" fighting is Rapier... Heavy refers to the armor type...
