this is a very bad translation of the original german version. But its very hard to translate this old german language of martin luther. I´m german and dont understand the full german version.
@susichie I agree. I talked to someone who speaks German. He thougth this translation which goes "a trusty shield and weapon" is better than the "standard "a bulwark never failing."
Martin Luther was a GREAT man! a Theologian before his time,, born and lived in Germany- and much like his contemporaries Calvan - founder of the Dutch Christian Reformed Church, and Theologian Josef Zwingli from Switzereland... They all brough about the reform of the false rituals of the Catholic Church....! You cannot BUY your way to heaven - only Jesus Christ can give it to you through His Devine Love and Grace for us!!!
@limehouse2005 The Catholic church do not and have never taught that you can buy your way too heaven..Martin Luther is one thing, but I can't see what good Zwingli did bring to the church...!?
@karpov89 :Well what would you say is : Buying Candles, Having the priest give you absolution in return for of praying 20 Ave Marias (example) Wonder how that pope raised money to build his St. Peter’s dome? (Now I know Catholics are always blind when it comes to that, because a Pope said its okay) But bottom line is the Catholic faith teaches that good works can negate sins. Fasting can make God do something, Praying to Saints and Maria…I guess you missed Sunday school a few times ..
@LadyMask01 Grüss Gott gnädige Frau! I am sorry to say but it is obvious that I know much more about Catholic faith than you do. The 20 Ave Maria you are talking about is the penance which is not necessary per se for the absolution. So it is and has always been! The question of Sola fide is not church dividing; there is a joint declaration on this doctrine between Lutherans and Catholics. You do not understand fasting and also Lutherans venerate and pray to Mary and the saints.
Thank you for putting this up! It is SO hard to find recordings of the Catherine Winkworth translation...I've been looking for one for a long time. The other translations just aren't "Missouri Synod" enough to please most of our congregation.
Oops! Correction: Catherine Winkworth did a translation of this hymn...this is not it. So before anyone thinks I'm an idiot, this translation was a composite done by the Pennsylvania Lutheran Church Book of 1868. (This is still the one I wanted, though!)

I have been looking for this translation forever. This is the version sung at my LCMS congregation, and it is definitely my favorite rendition.
