It's so hard to really get into this version, because her voice is so warm and pure...and his is like a laser cutting through steel and diamond, lol. Not that there's anything wrong with his voice, it's really suited to less intimate songs.
@djlowe75 I'm not a huge fan of this version of this song, either, but it might be interesting to see how Josh Groban and Hayley (or maybe even one of the other Celtic Women) would do together. :)
I do like this song and Jonathan's voice is very nice. My favourite tenor at the moment is GIANLUCA PAGANELLI. He's a new Italian tenor who just won a major competition in Italy and is now releasing an album in Britain. I would definitely recommend him - he's one of the most handsome men I've ever seen!!!
'sensa' instead of senza, 'sfucce' instead of sfugge, 'verà' instead of verrà, 'fiorerà' instead of fiorirà, 'sfelrà' instaed of svelerà, 'delaversità' instead of delle avversità. he is nearly perfect, she absolutely not. I like them very much when they sing in english but I can't stand them when they sing in italian especially her.
@LuigiSozzi A bit of a cotswold west country burr in your speech then. Not exactly english RP speech. The point is that you criticised the pronunciation of words that these two singers sang. Without giving due regard for the fact that they were singing in a language that is foreign to them. Pavarotti did not sing with perfect english pronunciation when singing in english.
One major mistake most English-speakers (American and British alike) while singing Italian/Spanish songs is making their Ds and Ts too hard, like in English. It puzzles me, as they usually get 'most everything else right. But no matter - these two are amazing.
One of the most beautiful songs ... this time I listen it in italiano... and I cryied... and i am still crying... Il Sacrificio... I never thought cry with it...
While Henry Mancini WAS a brilliant musician (and a favorite of mine), he is not the author of this piece. It's a reworking (with alternate lyrics) of the theme from Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet, written by Italian composer Nino Rota, also known for scoring The Godfather.
One of the best performances you will ever witness. I was there on the night and it made the hairs on the back of my nect rise. It was such an emotional performance sung by two very talented singers. They will both go very far.
You are totally correct. It has been great hearing her voice mature over the last few years. She is at the point now where she could put just about any other female singer to shame!!
As time goes on, Jonathon's voice actually seems to become that of an actual tenor, rather than that thin, tinny sound he otherwise makes (as though he's a 15 year old boyband wannabe).
His voice actually sounded lyrical and meaningful here. Hayley Westenra was as beautiful and fantastic as always though.
Yet Josh Groban's version still is 10x more emotive for me. His version brings tears to my eyes when I hear it, whereas this was just 'nice.'
For your information, I come back to this video many times, but I've never seen your comment before. It hasn't popped up in my inbox for some strange reason.
I'm not saying his voice isn't powerful. I was saying his voice when he first started (in G4) was very boyish and tinny.
While I like Josh Groban's version still much more, I do think this is one of the best vocally matched duets, and one of the best classical singer duets ever.
Yes, I said ever. His high notes to her melody is haunting
OK. I didn't read you post as carefully as I might have, but it is a tad unclear I feel. I don't mean that rudely -- we all bang out posts quickly without editing or proofreading here. My apologies if I misunderstood you.
Never, have I heard any song sang so well and with so much emotion.

Wow. I'm not really a classical music fan, and certainly was not a fan of anything to do with G4, but this was brilliant. Opened my mind.

I think the guy starts out a bit weak simply due to nerves -- he visibly looks nervous when he first starts!

Gotta give props to the man Henry Mancini for creating the song so we can enjoy performances like this.

What? Jonathan has one of the most powerful voices in the business. And for a tenor he is still young.
