Tough loss for Rip to end his career on. I've looked at the photo several times, and if the race wasn't a dead-heat? It's about as close as you can come to one. O'Brien always said that Rip was a miler, first and foremost. And that 09' Sussex win over Paco Boy and Ghanaatti was arguably a career best. But if you look at how close he came to STS in the 09' Coral-Eclipse, and look at the field he beat in the 10' Juddmonte International, hard to say Rip wasn't just as effective over 10f as a mile?
I am not being funny but surely surely surely that was a dead heat. I saw this on a big screen and I honestly could not split them. There was nothing in it. They both hit the line together. The line that the BBC put up makes it look further than it actually was from the angle I was watching and even that line made it look close. If you put the line on the ground both noses touch the line at the same time. Fair play to Poet's Voice though and the runner up!
Great efforts turned in by Poet's Voice and Rip Van Winkle both in this race. Both really ran very game races. Red Jazz also ran a career best effort for him in this kind of Graded company. I never thought Makfi would figure in this race. He looked bad in the St James's Palace Stakes. Like he just never took to the Ascot surface. Which was later blamed on a throat infection. No throat infection's today. LOL. Can't help thinking Canford Cliffs would've cantered all over this field, easily. JMO.
@GBeret83 I was quite surprised, by Red Jazz there. I wont be under estimating him again! Definately one to be wary of in any race of similar nature to this.

A thrilling renewal of this race and it was definitely Frankie Dettori's day. Also note Frankel's performance in the Royal Lodge Stakes.
