I never understood why Alan Rickman is preferred as Col. Brandon by -I dare say - the majority of women. In my opinion he is dull and not handsome at all. He could be Marianne's father. Any attachment between Brandon and Marianne is soo unlikely, not to mention the fact that they marry. I disliked the character of Brandon in the novel until I saw David Morrissey's performance. He is masculine, strong, but still very caring. And he has better looks. I definitely prefer Morrissey
@CeruleanFairy: You wrote "This is so nice about art: There's NO truth and NO lie. Because everything is about our own emotions!" Respectfully, I must disagree. Good actors strive very hard to embody truth. Dishonesty is anathema to a true artist, whether actor, writer, painter, etc. Perhaps you meant to speak from the audience/viewer's perspective to say one may like whatever one likes. That is empirically evident. But from the artist's point of view, truth is absolutely fundamental.
@VoraciousLime Hehehe, my thoughts exactly! It was supposed to be the other way, in the novel: Willoughby should have been very, very handsome, charming and full of passion, while Brandon was not-so-handsome, conservative and controlling and restraining his true feelings. I find John's actor dull and not attractive. Morrissey, on the other hand... yum, yum!!
David's mute expressions rivals that of Alan Rickman. I love them both as actors and as men but when it comes to Col. Brandon I choose both of them. They each bring something to the character that is sigh-worthy ;-)
I love this version of S&S...David Morrisey did a wonderful job. I also love the S&S with Alan Rickman...loved Greg Wise in the older version as well. I thought Emma Thompson was a bit too old to play Elinor but I think she is a wonderful actress. As for older version versus new versions I love 95 P&P over the newest...not the biggest fan of KK. I love both Persuasions equally though. Love both KH and RPH as Capt Wentworth.
Judging by this scene alone, I LOVE the cast, but HATE this version! It's so awkward! The music especially. I much prefer Patrick Doyle's score and everything else in the movie that I love.
I was totally opposed to this version of Sense and Sensibility. Partly because of Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. But, I must admit, mostly because of Alan Rickman.
But this guy is really good! I think he fits the role well and now I'm going to have to see the BBC version. I like David Morrisey's Brandon quite a bit. Thanks for posting this!!
Well, David Morrissey also did a great job. I've seen both versions (1995 and this one) and both Brandons are very good. I'm a Rickman-fan and I've never heard of David Morrissey before (well, not untill I've wachted the 2008 version). But, to tell you the truth, I like Morrissey's version more than Rickman's version. It could have been that I've wachted the 2008 version before the 1995 version.
I'm really frustrated, but if I have to choose, I will pick David.
Yeah, that devilish frown looks very good on Morrissey.
On the side note, I'm very happy that there's another David-fan :D! Most people like Rickman and detest Morrissey (very weird, it's nothing wrong to like both, right?)...
@Aiglea I agree completely I merely watched the ang lee film for Alan Rickman, but I really like David as well...the soft little sigh at finding willoughby at the cottage after he leaves....heart breaking....and his small little smiles...just kill me with love
David Morrissey and Alan Rickman did a wonderful performance but U can't avoid to tell that D.M. is my favorite. He looks younger than A.R. and of course he is more goergous and cute.
It's not so easy to say who is better colonel... Firstly I was shocked because the first Brandon I've seen was Alan Rickman - and I fell in love with his Brandon inmediately :) But now I must admit that David Morrissey also did a great job. They both are good and it depends on each of us who we prefer. So for me it's still AR... but if I didn't know him I can imagine very well to favour DM.
@Sandraelaa I think I'm going more for Morrisey. There is so much more sensitivity here and his eyes, he is very expressive. I think he gets to me more than the more acidic and sharp Rickman (all in the positives). He's more like Brandond should be now that I watched the series, I am quite taken with how he acted out the role..Boy I'm sure glad these producers do these adaptations every once in a while to give us some ekhm food for thought, :D
@CeruleanFairy That's interesting :-)) This is so nice about art: There's NO truth and NO lie. Because everything is about our own emotions! Everyone can choose things he likes for himself and nobody can say: No, you're not right. You can see "your" Brandon in David Morrisay and I can see "my" Brandon in Alan Rickman :-)
@Sandraelaa I most certainly agree about your poin re art. I liked Rickman but since watching this version, I've been rather swept off my feet :D It's quite a luscious adaptation, filled with sounds and subtle undertones and gestures and eye--these actors seem to have more expressive eyes. I certainly loved this Marianne and liked Elinor. What annoyed about Ms Thompson;s performance was her cry at the end of the film, kinda annoying. But yes. The good thing about having many versions: everyone
@CeruleanFairy (finalization xD): And both is alright! I'm not sure which of them acted Brandon more like Jane Austen's Brandon was (it's so long I've read the book) but I will always prefer Alan Rickman for his shy and gently expression...♥
Oh that moment when he realise Marianne is falling for Willoby is so heart wrenching. Especially when you see how alive he look first visits them and gives her some music and his happiness at seeing her well. David Morrissey did a fantastic job in this. I wish there could have been more scenes of him and Marianne at the beginning before willoby arrived just showing that Marianne did like him but didn't know it herself.
@apban I agree...just for the next adaptation a sort of into austen of S&S and please let someone fling willoughy over the cliffs after he's been kneed into his balls.
You simply fall in love with brandon...I have always seen rickman as the dear col...but now I have to say David is my main man! I so wanted him to do some poetry too...sighs
Started the vid just with my fave situation with Brandon - she falls and he's right there for her. What a nice strong man to catch her... I wished someone would pick me up like that if I fainted :-)
when tennant does not want to play the dr i think david morrissey would make a great replacement. i know he's in the christmas special this year but they'll work something out like he's the future incarnation of the dr. via 11th dr
I really like colonel brandon too, he is such a kind person and he really cares genuinely for marianne pls post more full clips with colonel brandon and marianne pls!:)

Colonel Brandon is 100000 times hotter than Willoughby in this version. I mean, seriously, ew.

I completely agree, they fleshed out the backstory more between Marianne and Col. Brandon. He also has a delicious scowl.
