Great rendition of the Beatles classic hit. I wonder how many people knew about the secret meaning of this sog back when alternative lifestyles were illegal.
Sorry, but sometimes too much is just TOO MUCH. Mum is a little flat in her opening verse. This song doesn't need harmonies..it's more expressive when ONE person, apparently love-lost and forlorn, sings it as did John.
Managed to get this CD on Ebay today for £3 what a bargain I bought this really for the memory of Kevin I will always remember his excitement of recording this and him telling my class at St George of England Secondary Modern in Bootle Merseyside little did we know at the time it would be a hit.
Just like a pupil at the time Billy J Kramer. Thanks for the Memories Kevin.
Brian Epstein was keen to challenge and compete with the Seekers who were one of the top selling bands of the 60's and extremely successful. Identical copy with the same intrumentation and format - Bass, 6 string and 12 string guitars and female lead singer with a tambourine......The Silkie were not as succesful, but this is a good number.
OMG I finally found this version! I have tried to tell people about this, but have never found anyone familiar with it. The band I was in back in college (1972-1976) played this, and I did the high harmonies. People thought my part was original, and then I'd credit Silkie with it, but no one had heard of them.
This is The BBCs Sounds of the 60s Beatles A to Z song for week starting SAT24JULY10 where the history of this song is given Paul explains that this is John doing Dylan It can be heard for 7days after July 24 by going to the site It is about 38mins into the prog I'm a bit late in posting this week so there is only about 8 to 10 hours left to listen A member of The Silky explains how Paul & George are both heard on their record & that John really produced it by operating the switches & directing
Jamie - I'd love to touch base with silvie sometime. Uncle Ivor was really close to me and told me a lot of stories from that time. But would be good to hear more. Hope alls well with you. Yours Rich
Since the Beatles only recorded this on an album (Help) and never released it as a single, this was the version that got the radio airplay at the time. The same for Michelle (off Rubber Soul) which was recorded by a duo named David and Jonathan.
@yobonab Suppose it depends on where you live. In Detroit / Windsor area I NEVER heard this version until years later when canadian radio had content restrictions imposed upon them (late '70s). The local stations were Top-40, but when it came to the Beatles, they played lots of album cuts. We heard the original ALOT... and nothing tops it.
I agree with KaptKan1. The harmonizing is what makes it their own. What a performance! Well done.
Jamieramsden007, this is your mom and dad!? Wow, they are a part of music history. That is awesome! I can't imagine what that would be like. Thanks for posting.
that's my mum and dad in the middle - kevin is on the left playing double bass, then mike (dad), sylvie (mum) and then ivor.
it was a Top 10 hit in the states and top 30in the UK.
paul's arrangement and he played the intro on the single, john was in the studio producing and george played the percussion. they were genuinely the only band to record with the beatles....
jamie, GOD BLESS YOUR MUM AND DAD! This song was indeed a huge hit in the USA when I was a teenager there. I always liked this version even better than the Beatles' original. It is truly the best Beatles "cover" ever.
@jamieramsden007 You're not biased man, that's a cold, hard fact. I played my 45 rpm of this so much it wore out. Your mum's harmonising was MAGIC! Tell her I said so with much thanks.
Congrads on making history for your mum & dad. 45 years later, IT STILL SOUNDS GREAT. i would love to know if they ever made an other tunes, other than City Winds.
Kev obtained (through his usual subtle ways) a studio version of the album that has the Dylan album (with the Beatles cover) and 4
"original" or other songs. There was City Winds written by my dad (which was the B side to Hide Your Love Away), Keys to My Soul (which Ivor wrote - a beauty), Help Me Brother (which was a pumped up version of a folk standard, I believe) and Close the Door Gently (which was written by a scottish bloke and is another beaut).
OK Update - I did some fact checking and the latest (OneWay) CD has the bonus tracks:
1) Leave me to Cry (Not sure who wrote it but will find out)
2) Keys to My Soul (Ivor)
3) Born to be wth You (D. Robertson)
4) I'm So Sorry (Not sure again)
Close the Door Gently is on the Album and CD (but not an original), as is City Winds (written by my Dad). I'll have to find out about Blood Red River, as the "rising sun" is a pub they used to drink in, I believe.
The Help me Brother song is one of a few more on the Silkie Session CD which I have to dig out. I'll ask mum about the rest - she is coming to stay with us in the US next month, so I'll have her post. Email me/post on this site if you have any other questions about the band/history/Beatles.
The CD was reissued by Hux Records last December - not sure if this is a simple reprint of the One Way version, but will let you know.
@jamieramsden007 Jamie, their Wiki notes your mum & dad sometimes gigged with some of their children. Did that include you? Really wonderful sound they had, great harmonies. And Sylvie in particular has such a distinct, lovely voice.
@jamieramsden007 fyi this version was first known to the American public at the time before the beatle version became known to the public. I have both versions of the U.S. fontana lp, one with a blue cover, the other with a purple cover. This has a secure place in history.
First version I ever heard, and I immediately fell in love with the harmonies. The studio version is impeccable. They're not the Beatles, but this may be the best cover of any Beatles tune, anytime. Glad to see the group doing it live. Even happier to learn the Beatles were in on it.
Lennon arranged this song for the Silkie and co-produced the single with McCartney. So you can't say that this version isn't true to the songwriter's vision.
I agree with pogodog -- and I'm a BIG Beatles fan. Very few groups or individuals ever did justice to an original Beatles song, but The Silkie really outdid the lads who wrote this one.
This is actually from November 1965, not 1966. Whatever the case, there's a lot to be said for this being the definitive version of the song. Even better was the flip side on the 45, which was a great folk rocker called "City Winds". Would LOVE to see a video of that one!
how very sad to read of ivor's passing! i spent 2 very happy years, straight out of uni, working for the home office at gatwick airport, and my social life at the time relied very heavily on "folk at the chequers" every sunday evening, with ivor, john (scott cree), kevin, and others. during my 30 years living and working in spain i often remembered those evenings and the "famous recording artists" i had known when i lived in the uk! best wishes to all ivor's family and associates. daveR
It says by the person who posted this, that the band was managed by Brian Epstein. Do you have any memories of your dad talking about Brian or the Beatles? best wishes.
I'm so sorry to learn about your Dad. When he and I played this song, we called it a medley of his hit. I've been trying to re-establish contact for years and am glad to have found you through his video. A rare Beatles song sung by them without vocal harmony, which this spirited cover version however neatly and tastefully supplies. Thanks for posting it.

Thank you so much for this vintage video clip. I had heard the group in "Oldies but Goodies" broadcasts never to have a look at them or know anything about who they were. Thanks for sharing with us some of their history - I am impressed by the "clean teenager look" of those days. I guess we were not that bad then!
Good old Mr Cunningham they were a good sounding folk group when you think Liverpool had them all so many Great bands the list is endless Merseybeat forever
I am Zoe, Kevyn's daughter. It has been amazing to read such lovely things here about my dad and his band. He often told me about appearing on TV but this is the first time that I have ever actually seen him.
This was written by John Lennon. The Silkies' version was produced by Lennon himself, with Paul McCartney on guitar & George Harrison playing percussion. The groups album of the same name is also notable for several great Dylan covers, including Blowing In the Wind, The Times They Are AChangin, Girl of the N. Country & It Aint Me Babe. In a taped conversation between Dylan, who apparently knew nothing about the group, & Lennon: Dylan asks What do they sound like? Lennon replies: Silky.
Beautifull to see you like to hear you few years ago. We never forget the moments together with you. Big kisses from France to you Sylvia and all your familly.
I knew Syvia when we were both teenagers at school here in Stoke, I never knew she could sing. Imagine my surprise at seeing her on the tellie back in the60's.She had a wonderfully happy outlook and a super sense of humour.
This was the first version that came out on the radio back then.Check the tube for the recorded version by the Silkie , its much better despite the video
The only song done better by someone other than the Beatles. I like this version better because the female voice really adds a special, extra emphasis. Well done, and too bad the group didn't go farther.
I can't help but agree. This is actually the first rendition of the song that I had ever heard. I avoided the long lines at movie theaters in the summer of '65 and didn't see "Help" or "A Hard Day's Night", for that matter, until early '66. I heard this song when it came out in the fall of '65 and it remains a most beautiful gem of music signifying that time.
Thanks for posting this it is a very hard to find I remember my teacher telling the class the group were on television when this was recorded and guess who the teacher was Kevin Cunningham I often wondered what happened to Kevin last seen in Bootle,Merseyside

I knew Syvia when we were both teenagers at school here in Stoke, I never knew she could sing. Imagine my surprise at seeing her on the tellie back in the60's.She had a wonderfully happy outlook and a super sense of humour.

I like this version. Eddie Vedders has a good version too, but the Beatles did the original!

Mike and Sylv became friends of mine and actually played a short set at my wedding.
Sadly Mike passed away three years ago .. the church in Totnes Devon was packed to the rafters.
A great guy , a wonderful couple and fabulous friends. ... lots of love to you and the family Sylv ... xxxx

Wow never seen this. Live too.
I've got the original 45. It's a great cover version. There's a nice little guitar lick missing on this version.

The singer kind of sounds like Sandy Denny. Great version of a great song.

The male voice is great for this song. The female's, not so good.

great harmonies, but her lead part in the first verse doesn't work that well.

I guess the reason I've never heard of this group is that they are British. I'm in the US. I like them!
