I like how Stipey puts a harsher edge on his vocals on this version, even if the cold, detached style he used on the album was pretty good too (and very fitting, given the subject matter)
I listened to the complete MONSTER cd last week. It was greta and rockin!! I knew Michael before he was with R.E.M. and he knows where we come from. But who's to blame?
@spd13062 not sure who is this kenneth, but frequency refers to a property of sound. the word musicians use for frequency is pitch. The shorter the wavelength, the higher the frequency, and the higher the pitch, of the sound.
@foilseal it's referring to an incident where news anchor Dan Rather was assaulted by a couple of guys shouting "What's the frequency, Kenneth?". I'm sure you can find the story in more detail online.
@foilseal If you had spent 15 seconds looking up Dan Rather on wikipedia you might not have made such a dumb comment.
"On October 4, 1986, as Rather was walking along Park Avenue in Manhattan to his apartment, he was attacked and punched from behind by a man who demanded to know, 'Kenneth, what is the frequency?'" etc.
Do a bit of research before calling someone a liar over the internet.
@colinistchurch anybody can write anything on wikipedia. that's probably where the lie started. people like you will believe anything. you probably think toothpaste is mined by moon monkeys.
@foilseal do you have any better theories as to who Kenneth is? How about why Dan Rather would sing the song in Madison Square Garden with R.E.M. (Which you can see on youtube if you DID SOME FUCKING RESEARCH)?
And FYI, wikipedia is a lot more controlled than people give it credit for being. I challenge you to write that toothpaste is mined by moon monkeys on wikipedia, and see how long it takes them to delete it. There is no point in arguing further, you are blatantly wrong.
@foilseal i'm not sure if you know what google is, but if you go to google.com and search "Dan Rather Frequency" you will see that it is not my conspiracy theory at all. And even if you don't believe that the incident really happened, the story is still the reason why the song is called What's the Frequency Kenneth. There is no point in arguing because it isn't a matter of opinion, it is a fact.
@colinistchurch you just proved my point which is that you'll take anything you read on the internet and label it fact simply because you read it. you've probably already passed on the story of the toothpaste monkeys to other nuts like yourself and soon REM will write a song about them.
@colinistchurch see, that's just the thing...you don't use reason. don't you think REM would have been arrested if they shot Dan Rather? don't you think it would have made the news? also, what would REM have to gain by this?
REMs first song of what has to be the best ever live performance from rem, musicaly, vocaly and Stipes persona on stage.Seen them live twice now and true to say they are better live thats why all REM fans should have this dvd in their collection.
....great song. When I sing it with my band sometimes I think that I would like sing it to the person that some years ago tryed to ruin my life but is enough for me to know that I have many person that loves me and that I will fight for my life.....
.....congraturation Mr stipe, remain in my heart with all the good moments of music that you give me.........
lame how they never show the drummer...their new drummer, Bill Rieflin...he used to play with Ministry...(did you know Al Jourgensen is actually a full-blooded Cuban?)
They don't over-do themselves commercially like U2, they seem to set themselves into the stone, and make sure they don't jump out. Their music is just amazing, and Michael Stipe is great.
U2 is so pretentous. they still make good music but I just feel like it is heavily produced. I mean everyone gets produced when they're big but there is something about R.E.M. that stays humble. Bono is all about getting in the media.
U2 have wrote 14 studio albums, and various side projects at that - they're similar to REM in such a way that they record pop-rock (you could argue that I guess).
They appear to be commercial, because like REM's Automatic for the People, and Out of Time - some albums reach global fame.
Do not confuse U2 and Bono, Bono's charity work is very much a seperate sphere to that of U2 - which is what I think you have confused.
touche (I don't know how to do the accent but you know what I'm trying to say.)
I just like to watch REM preform more than U2.
Bono is like "I'm Bono, hear me roar" and I'm just like get over yourself with your damn sunglasses you aren't blind. Stipe does that paint band now though so whatever I guess they have bragging rights.
I think that U2 is a great band, and Bono's charity work has nothing to do with U2. He is a great singer and songwriter. U2 an REM are my two favourite bands...
I must say I did not like Monster when it came out. But this song sounds great. I jst kinda recently got into them again and discovered what a great album New Adventures is. I have a feeling the new record will be great. They really are as great as we think they are.
i was the same until i saw the live dvd filmed at the peak of the monster tour in the orange bowl in (atlanta?? i think) i didnt quite get alot of the songs until i saw them on there.
Listening to this song always makes me think that Stipe could write the most biting, intense break up letter ever. I wish I had the kind of writing skills he does.
well if u kuld spel mebbe i wud takes yuu seriuzly.
P.S.
I'm a bit of a late bloomer on getting into R.E.M., but if all their fans are like you, then they're a pretty sorry lot. I'm pretty safe in assuming that you're the least educated person here--so I've got little to fear from the rest.
Judging from your ignorant remark it is obvious your a fellow American. R.E.M. are one of the biggest bands in the world. Get that dude? The world. Think about that. Let it sink in. Now loose the hate and dig the love that is R.E.M..
What were they thinking?! Could they not just have rehired Julia Knowles to direct? (Perfect Square). It's great REM are changing things around (new producer/new rock record/Dublin summer shows) but this is really too much. The editing is aweful, watching this ned DVD will induce headaches around the world. REM are amazing live, they don't need some arty farty director to bolix it up.
and hey, this is a "deep cut". it makes me happy that these videos won't just be "the hits." they get credit from me. and i love 'monster', it changed my life when i was 16, pretty much anyway. rock on guys.
automatic was an incredible height :) it is understandable if they will never equal it really, yet i wait in hope. And im certainly enjoying their attempts since, some of their songs after have been amazing.
I find it ridiculous that people bitch them off for not disbanding, i like the fact that they are still going on. That quit when you are are the top crap never meant much to me why do that? Just makes people sad that you have quit and wonder what could have been.
Hope to see the dvd soon. I don't particularly like this one...it just seems too edited, too u2-megavideo-style and I think REM has the edge of turning the most simple stuff into a charismatic and elevating show. I have to say peter buck is a very underated guitarist.
