Being from Jamaica he felt he could claim 100% Black-dom and for that everyone else should somehow bow down to him. It was a way to attempt to control the more scholarly Blacks that had been committed to working on racial issues in the US. This was a control mechanism no different than any other unreasonable attempt at grabbing for power.

Mulattoes were evidence of our self hatred because they didn't identify with blacks and turned against them. there hatred for blacks was an issue with society.

They also paint a picture of a kindly man who stayed to himself but the pictures show him in outlandish costumes. One of his more notorious 'fits' was his vicious battle of words with W.E.B. Du Bois, (another tremendous mind of the time). Garvey stooped so low as to call him a racial 'mutt' because Du Bois, was not 100% African (or African-American). I found it inappropriate to say the least.
