Time Travel is not a theory, it is a fact. We all literally travel through time as each moment passes. The true debate is about whether or not we can move forward in time *faster*, or move backwards in time.
Yeah, the theory is solid. I want to see the practice of it though. Our current technologies just can't pull it off. I think scientists should focus on teleportation technology first. The 0.9 of that is already possible since we can see and view places 360 degrees over the internet. What's needed to reach 1.0 is to have us be able to move freely within all spaces (requiring a live intelligent camera at these locations). 2.0 would have tactile & temperature from the environment.

The theory that i time machine can only travel backward in time to the point where it was switched on solves the following problem: "if we ever invent a time machine capable of traveling into the past, then there would be visitors from the future to the present day." i.e. since we haven't invented a time machine which can travel into the past yet, one would not be able to travel to the present day.
However, would it not also be true that a human could not travel back past his/her birthday?

@CHITOWN1987 I think that guy was being rhetorical. Because the cosmonaut had spent so long travelling at 17,000 mph, he travelled 1/50th of a second into the future. I don't think they are seriously saying the cosmonaut knew he was 1/50th of a second ahead of where he expected to be.

Yeah, the theory is solid. I want to see the practice of it though. Our current technologies just can't pull it off. I think scientists should focus on teleportation technology first. The 0.9 of that is already possible since we can see and view places 360 degrees over the internet. What's needed to reach 1.0 is to have us be able to move freely within all spaces (requiring a live intelligent camera at these locations). 2.0 would have tactile & temperature from the environment.

We already have the technologies for it; they just are not openly displayed to the world. Did you know doctors have successfully used nano-byte technology to remove some cases of brain cancer? It is very possible to time travel to both the past and the future! Time is not linear as we in Western cultures view it; time is a continuous circle and is not fixed as we believe. @TheQneb Well of course 8 nanoseconds and 500 mph is nothing compared to what it would truly take for you to be traveling into the future at a greater speed and not only that but the length of time. They say if you travel at 99.9% the speed of light for 7 years straight, then you will go 500 years into the future. The only way where you could get at, near, or even past light speed is through warp drive where it warps the space around you without getting crushed with all of the mass increase.

Also if you put nano-clock spinning into the orbit with satelite and keep similiar nano-clock on the ground, start them same time you can easily see how the time travel happens to the clock at the orbit: Its time passes slower. The difference of time passing is bigger in orbit speeds also than at 500mph :)

Even if we did travel back in time, things would stay as they are. If I went back and tried to erase a problen from my past, I would have accidently have caused the problem in the first place. So whatever happened in the past was down to someone's choices. Even a future time traveller might have given the Egyptians the technology to build the pyramids. So the future is connected to the past in more ways than we know.

Back in time scenario meaning on Jan 2500 you travel somehow/somewhere to a point where the rate at which earth time slows down relative to you and you spend 50 years from your perspective traveling then return to earth to find it is Jan 2501. Effectively going back in time by 49 years but not returning before you left. I think I'll scratch that trip off my list.

The rate at which time passes for someone traveling at 99.9% SOL slows down relative to rate of earthbound time. Just as inversely the rate at which time passes on the earth appears to speed up relative to someone traveling at near SOL. The difference between the rates at which time passes relative to each other results in this time travel. But you can never go into the future/past to see yourself nor could you ever go back in time and return to earth before the time that you left the earth.

Cont...another example of this fact is time on earth, earth time is slower than time in space because of the gravity on earth, even up a mountain, time runs faster than time at the bottom of the mountain. Gravity which is created by mass or the energy in a particle of matter slows down time. So in your space ship at high speed, in space, the increase in mass would create gravity and thus slow down time...Earth time would tick as normal, but your time would stop or slow down. Earth gets older.
