I wish Shinn had sold the Hornets to Jordan and Robert Johnson way back when they first wanted the team. In the end, Hornets left and Charlotte got a brand new expansion team via Jordan and RJ but I really wish the Hornets were still here. The whole "Hive is Alive", Muggsy, Grandmama.. none of that can be replaced! :/ I'm sure many folks in New Orleans feel the same about the Jazz.
@79kassius yeah I know how it feels. We had almost the exact thing happened to us that happened to you guys. We originally had the Jazz and they took that and all the memories of the Jazz from New Orleans to Utah and they took the Hornets to New Orleans and gave Charlotte the Bobcats. I am a Hornets fan but still wish the Jazz was down here still sometimes. I wish the NBA could stop moving teams around cuz it makes all the fans sad to lose there teams. Ask Seattle.
Memories indeed. I remember watching some of Charlotte's games during the 90's, especially during 1996, 97, and 98. It was Glen Rice leading Charlotte that time.
@ariferbasi123 cuz Shinn wanted to build new arena at no cost to him so people was really pissed, so they issued one thing: NBA buy the team and keep in Charlotte and Shin get the hell out of the city, unfortuanatly NBA rejected it becouse they felt it will cause anger among other NBA team owners. So they moved. It was 2 years in a row how two teams was moved, 1st Van Grizzlies in 2001 and 2nd Charlotte Hornets in 2002. Shinn was and forever be an asshole!
@BaltijosTigras As a New Orleanian I hated Shinn for destroying our Division winning 2008 team which is the Reason why CP3 Bolted. So glad the NBA took this team from his greedy ass. I hope when we get our New Owner they can give yall name back and history and we take the Jazz name back. Heres to Hoping!!!!!!
This reminds me of the great times i grew up with. Mugsy Bogues, Dell Curry my favorite players. I still follow New Orleans Hornets but it can never be the same as Charlotte Hornets. I still have my Charlotte Hornets jersey and shorts that i practised in when i was about 9-10 years old.
Loved this team. The Hornets in their first seven years in Charlotte lead the NBA in attendance. It was doing fine until George Shinn didn't want to resign Alonzo Mourning and that's when fans knew they had a cheap owner. Add that with George's rape allegations and the fans just did not want to support his team.
I was born in 1996, and while I was young when the Hornets left Charlotte, I still cheer for them today. They had a great History in Charlotte, and I'd take them over the Bobcats any day...
i heard Michael Jordan gonna change the name of bobcats and maybe buy hornets name becouse NO Hornets belong to NBA not to some owner so dream can become reality.
@SAINTSMONSTER96 Yeah but still Hornets can be moved to Seattle or other Relocation becouse of low attendence and some money issues, but yeah it would be amazing. Anyway sad how Stern monoploized NBA. Now Sonics left, Kings have possibility to leave Sacramento. It sucks! And Clay Bennet who moved Sonics is now chairman of NBA relocation committee and he is ''friend'' of Sterns. Sad that NBA once was all about fun not about money like right now :(
@504pkknight08 oh this sucks i think same thing happened with sonics. Charlotte Hornets was the best franchise Charlotte ever had. In fact i never liked bobcats its kinda stupid name and i didnt like the colors of it. I mean charlotte had Larry Johnson, Muggsy Bogues, Baron Davis, Vlade Divac and etc. And what Bobcats have right now? Gerald Wallace? ok he is good player...MJ as a Owner? Well maybe i want too much in 6 year team but anyway Larry Brown as a coach sucked.
I remember seeing this when it originally aired in 02. It honestly was one of the saddest moments of my life because I grew up with this team. It didn't hit me that it was all over until they showed this. Thanks for posting it.
The Hornets were originally in Charlotte from 1988-2002. I miss the Hive (aka Charlotte Coliseum) and the WNBA's Charlotte Sting. Due to George Shinn becoming a pariah in Charlotte (among other reasons), the Hornets moved to New Orleans. Because of Hurricane Katrina, the New Orleans Hornets played in Oklahoma City for a couple seasons. The NBA owns the New Orleans Hornets presently.
sucks im from charlotte. rite now the panthers are horrible and the bobcats just got blown out by 33 by the wizards minus john wall....wow. and yes...the bobcats name is horrendous. im down for changing it to charlotte flight
I had forgotten about the headbands during that last season! This video makes me want to cry...the Bobcats don't give me the same chills inside as the Hornets did at the Charlotte Coliseum.
My favorite moments of the Charlotte Hornets were:
1. When Zo Mourning was the 1st Hornet to be on the cover of Sports Illustrated (94 NBA preview issue w/ Bill Russell) and 2. when SI spent a week with the Hornets as they faced the Bucks in the '01 playoffs (it was an SI cover story as well). Hopefully 45/MJ can bring a title to Charlotte before Hughie Weber, CP3 and the New Orleans Hornets win one.
yea utah should change its name to the Utah Blizzard since its cold in utah, Charlotte should go bck to bein the Hornents, and New Orleans should go bck to bein the jazz
I think the Bobcats should change their name back to the Hornets and New Orleans could change their name to something else more suitable like back to the Jazz. Then Utah could change their name since Jazz music has never been popular in Utah anyway. Maybe they could change their back to "the Stars".
@indyfeed You still haven't answered my question. I know that Shinn was/still is a pariah in Charlotte. However, why were the crowds at the Hive during the 2001 playoffs the biggest compared to the postseason of 2000 and 2002?
You mean from the postseasons of 2000, 2001, and 2002, which were the largest? The 2001 and 2002 playoffs were nothing compared to 2000 because of the team and George Shinn's tarished reputation. The team was 21st in attendance in 2001 compared to 10th in 2000 if that gives you any idea. And of course in 2002, they were last, averaging just 11,000 people a game.
I wish the Hornets and Sting were still in Charlotte playing at the Hive (renovated like Key Arena and Oracle were).
However, I still remained puzzled. Big crowds came to the Hive the 2001 NBA playoffs but not so much in the 2000 and 2002 NBA postseason at Charlotte Coliseum. Can somebody fill me in?
Makes me wanna cry....so many memories. I can't believe how much Charlotte has changed since the days of Muggsy, LJ, Alonzo. I like the Bobcats but the Charlotte Hornets were my first love and made me the sports fanatic I am today
Hahahaha.. And I thought I was the only person that had this video.. I had to grab the video camera after their last game and record it off TV.. And I just uploaded it tonight.. and then HERE IT IS.. I feel like a jackass.. haha
Grew up a huge hornets fan, but I've having a rough time making the transition to the Bobcats. I really wish the NBA forced Shinn & New Orleans to find a new name. It's really frustrating. BUT I understand how bad New Orleans must feel, when they see the name "Utah Jazz" on jerseys.
I'm from New Orleans and a big fan of the N.O. Hornets but I understand the devotion Charlotte had for the Hornets and I know of the history of the name "hornets" to that area.
I really wish the NBA could do a swap where We take back the name "Jazz" and Charlotte gets back the name "Hornets" and give Utah the name "Bobcats"...But that will never happen as Utah has a history as the Jazz.
@Galastin How can a city become attached to a team name that means "nothing" to who they are? Utah has simply accepted "the Jazz", but I'm sure they'd have no problem with getting a name that represented who they are, if they had an option! What a perfect name for them? No clue. BUT when Utah finds it, I know they'd rather have it than the "jazz"! That's the issue. The city has done polls, they can't think of anything!! haha
@ckad79 You have absolutely NO idea. I want to stinkin burn Kirilenko and every one of those wannabe basketball players' jerseys. And those new jerseys they got make me want to cry.

Highest attendance for the
