I partly based my purchase of the twin turbo 2 on your review, thanks. If you're worried about the PCB flexing, do what I did and zip-tie the original backplate back on. One other thing... you didn't put any sinks on the VRM (under the white sticker).
Little trick if you're worried about the PCB being flimsy with a chunk of metal hanging from it....get some cotton or fine string (black is good) tie it through the outermost screwhole at the back of the PCB (screwhole is now vacant due to cooler removal) and tie the other end somewhere at the top of your case - there are multiple places to tie string to a case. There you go - a little support for the back of the PCB.
That cooler is lighter than the stock cooler and because most of the weight is positioned at the center of the card and not at the end, there will be no bending. If you've seen the Asus DirectCU II coolers then you'll know what I'm talking about. They have poor support and the cooler runs off at the end of the card causing a bend in the PCB. I have two 6950's with that stock cooler but I'm replacing them with the Accelero Twin Turbo II's. Asus does some stupid things.
SNAP, i figured out whats going on with my situation, after watching this video i see you have a 1GB card, therefore it only has vram on the front of the card. but because my card is a 2GB, it has the ram chips on the front and back. they only sent enough heatsinks for the front....bummer. now i have to order another 15 bucks worth of coolers. the worst part is i have to wait another week to get them in the mail. is it ok to go ahead and game with only one side having heatsinks?
seems like a chinchy ass 29 cent solution to a prob that they could have come up with something better for. you got this beast ass cooler for the gpu and then jack shit for a vram cooler. go figure
i really really really dont want to burn up another expesive video card all because the damned vram coolers wont stay on. i did clean the chips with an erasure as instructed but im still feeling a bit unsure about them.
somehow. (a clamp or screw or something) Im hoping that when i first put the vram coolers on and i immediately got on the pc and started gaming, that maybe that heat them up and maybe will help the tacky strips to stick better. ?
correct me if im wrong but now that ive put this cooler on my gfx card, there isnt anything to cool the back of the card where the vram chips are. i put some of the left over stock tacky stuff on the chips but they still need aluminum coolers on them right? or are they figuring that the aluminum coolers that they provided for the front of the card are enough to cool off the vram alone? also, i really dont like the idea of the vram coolers just sticking to the chips, they should be attached
My problem is, when i called my local technical expert to install this on my HD 6870 (fits perfectly) he didn't install the heatsinks you see at 4:23. What happens if they're not there? (Been using the Accelero twin turbo pro in gaming for about 2 days now). Will it run quieter while I, for example, listen to music on youtube, when I install the heatsinks? Can I just take it off, install the heatsinks, and pop it back on?
@ChristopherspaceWaid yes i would highly advise putting them on, the prob is getting them to stick, make sure to clean the vram chips really really good with and erasure before hand.
@Taz1451 true but i see what hes getting at. compared to the old case, which fully enveloped the entire components of the gfx card, there isnt much protection from lets say....anything. maybe you want to clean your pc, maybe you want to take the card out and reapply paste, maybe you have other hardware in the case that could interfere with touching the back of the gfx card (hypothetical)
Great tutorial, I watched it a few times, and then purchased the cooler and installed it on my 5870 after the stock-fan started to make the rumbling noise of doom.
Thanks for making this video. It was a bit more helpful then the actual instructions for most of the dismantling and rebuild. The fans so quiet !
ATI CARDS COMPATIBILITY : HD 6870, 6850 HD 5870, 5850, 5830 HD 4890, 4870, 4850, 4830 HD 4770 HD 3870, 3850 HD 2900XT, 2900 Pro X1950, X1900 series X1800, X1650 series X1600, X1550 series X1300 series
It do get a littel flexible but then again..who would come and bend your gfx card like some Hulk. And it will get dusty now :/ But for thats a small sacrefise for extreme good cooling !
the 4 screws at the centre of my sapphire 6870 are smaller than the ones in your video, my screwdriver doesn't fit. or their size are the same? what is your screwdriver's size? PH1? PH0? 00? 000?
@badboydiablo Sadly it doesn't support the new AMD 6 Series but the "Xtreme Plus" Vga Cooler does and we will be reviewing this very soon, so keep a look out! :)
@VortezReviews@Sadly it doesn't support the new AMD 6 Series but the "Xtreme Plus" Vga Cooler does and we will be reviewing this very soon, so keep a look out! :)
yea i was kinda having the same problem but only that the original cooler wont fit in my small ass case. so do u know any good alternative to this cooler which would be about the same size to the Twin turbo pro but fits on the HD6970? thanks.
@VortezReviews It will support the 5770. It isnt said anywhere but i have an 5770 and i have installed the 5770 on it(with a very tight fit for the 6 pin cable) and i think it will also support the 6950
I have Twin Turbo PRO on my 5770, but not on referen. I have MSI R5770-PMD1G. You must do one small modification, cut few mm from this long heatsink on DDR5 chips.
@PokePackOpener14 chipboards are always percieved to be one of the most fragile parts of a pc yet they are one of the most sturdy parts so nothing to worry about with a bit of flexing..
This Video will help me disassemble mine due to a bad fan on the factory 5870 i have. Thanks for uploading this. I would have place mine on an anti-stat bag on my wood desk, clean off thermal paste and re-apply new paste, and don't use eraser on memory chips use alcohol its better, and at time frame 6:07 in video... do not flex your board!!!! are you trying to weaken the solder joints? I was cringing watching that. I will buy the PROLIMATECH MK-13 instead (much nicer)
Hi mate. Nice video but you should be taking anti-static precautions. Damage done by static can cause electronics to fail prematurely (but not usually immediately).
@ianmaw66 Nice catch. The thing that bothered me the most was the thermal paste when he placed the board onto the cooler. I always remove that with thermal paste remover and coffee filters and apply fresh paste.
@OmgItsDedi We didn't realise that he uses the same audio, that music is in fact royalty free so there will be many others who use that audio. We have re-designed the intro now anyways!
@xokelydokelyx This is funny. The paste was pre-installed by Sapphire. I guess they have no idea what they are doing or what ESD is. Maybe you should drop them an email my good friend? I'm sure they can benefit from your expertise!
@VortezReviews although most of the card is covered in plastic, he's right, electrostatic discharge is dangerous sometimes. it is rare but it's better to be safe than sorry
also, he's right. it is too much thermal paste. most companies actually don't take care into the amount of thermal paste their factories apply automatically to each and every unit. granted it's not as bad as macbook's cpus, they're absolutely shocking, but it can do with less on the plate. tried and tested.
@xokelydokelyx Non-conductive paste is safe to have a bit much of, as long as you squish it down just as much as an even spread. Also ESD is worried about too much. A towel isn't the best thing of course, but as long as you're not rubbing it on balloons or something, I think you'd be fine. The PCBs have a conformal coating for a reason... Just don't touch connectors :P
question for you. since you plugged the cooler into the GPU fan header, can you control the fan using MSI afterburner? and does the fan change speed under certian temps?
Good vid i have the simlar cooler on my hd 5970 they work great .And i run my fans at full speed 24/7 and you can bearly hear them an it drop my temps buy over 10 degrees on each gpu.
A note that is important - you neglected to install a heatsink on the VRM chip at the top left corner by the ram chip. That may have contributed to your poor VRM results on your review.
You should always clean off the thermal gap filling paste and re-apply new paste every time you take off and on a heatsink. Silver paste can actually conduct electricity and put in the wrong spot it can short something. Really, the paste it comes with should be removed completely and in its place just a rice sized portion placed onto the gpu itself. This way you know where the paste is, and theres not too much. You've got way too much, it will save you 2-5C.
I partly based my purchase of the twin turbo 2 on your review, thanks. If you're worried about the PCB flexing, do what I did and zip-tie the original backplate back on. One other thing... you didn't put any sinks on the VRM (under the white sticker).
