beautiful, pristine, divine, gossamer, mellifluous, perfect. I love you god for giving me the chance to weep in sheer delight that something so wonderful can be seen and experienced by me. Thank you!
Just watched this episode again, still as moved as when I first saw it. It gives picard the chance for a family - I never thought I needed children to complete my life, now I can't imagine a life without them' he says. Think Im gettinghg sentimental in my old age!
@jalinapesreturns This was the turning point for Picard in the Next Generation TV/movie series. He finally realized how much he had sacrificed for his career. That's what made losing his nephew and brother in the first movie so devastating for him.
to be honest I did not like this episode and I think it is overrated. I did not feel emotional at all in the end for that species, or for Picard. I don't know. There was nothing.
This episode, especially the soulful flute but all of it, made me look at Star Trek in a very different light. Only two episodes have ever made me cry; this one and City on the Edge of Forever. This one in particular, when Picard's/Kamen's wife died, invoked the scene in Gandhi where his wife (and soulmate) died and when Edith Keeler HAD to die while Kirk held back bones in "City." This kind of drama just doesn't exist anymore and it's a shame.
@cestrell What was impressive is that we see Picard as husband and father, a role he longs for but does not assume due to his sense of commitment to Starfleet. The final scene where he clutches the flute to his chest is the ultimate expression of longing for that life.
That is what I loved about TNG - the episodes made you think; it wasn't all about battles and war all the time (I love Star Wars, but find it intellectually deficient in many ways). This episode was especially powerful.
This episode, to me, wasn't just Star Trek at it's best, it was television at it's best. It presented an engaging story, with fantastic and believable acting, great costuming...tied to an exciting back story...that presented, well...life.
It's episodes like these that made STNG truly special.

I could not have stumbled on this video on at a more perfect time. I love Star Trek: The Next Generation more then most people and I really enjoyed this video. The score speaks so loudly that, as long as you know the story, that the dialogue speaks loud enough to be heard without words
Truthly beautiful. The song makes me think of relatives who are no longer with me and the memories I have of them. Memories still fresh even though the relatives had been dead for some time.
JURO QUE LA PRIMERA VEZ QUE VI ESTE CAPITULO Y LA CANCION SUFRI MUCHO SENTI EN MI CORAZON LO QUE SUFRIO JEAN LUKE Y ME DOY CUENTE QUE LA HUMANIDAD VA DIRECTO A LA AUTODESTRUCCION POR FAVOR TOMEMOS CONSIENCIA Y CAMBIEMOS(I PROMISE THE FIRST TIME I HEAR THI'S CHAPTER AND THE SONG I CRY IN MY HEART FOR THE SUFER OF JEAN LUKE AND I NOTICE THE HUMANITY IS GOING STRAIGHT TO THE AUTODESTRUCION PLEASE WE HAVE TO CHANGE AND MAKE CONSIENCE) (I'M SORRY FOR HOW I WRITE IN HINGLISH I STILL LEARNIG)
It saddens me to think that when people think of star trek they just think 'poor nerd', but i say poor them, if only they knew they were missing brilliance like this, star trek produces the best story lines, acting and music that there will ever be.
It's one of two profound expirences that changed him - one was assimilation and libration from Borg Collective, which revealed his "human" part (cold retribution, anger, survival instinct) and second - where he actually understod that OWN Family and Children aren't that bad. For both reasons he didn't come hard on Sisko in "Emissary".
This is probably the ONLY video I have seen on this site without mindless bickering in the comments sections. That truly is commendable. It shows just how classy we Trekkers/Trekkies are :)
@MrAudacia Well, I'm certainly not as zealous as some. For example, the only time I've ever worn a uniform was for Halloween (Riker). I do play the games, i.e. STO and I watch TNG a great deal. And while I've watched TNG as a child, I only recently embraced my fandom, about three years ago.
Such a beautiful episode and song. So many enduring themes in one story: loss, regret, family, memory, community, love. This is screenwriting at its best.
@Geshien me too. when I first saw this I really teared up when he clutches the flute to his chest. The last remnant of a life as significant to him as his own. Really lovely piece of music.

“So keep at your work, this faith and love, exactly as I set it out for you. It's as sound as the day you first heard it. Guard this precious thing placed in your custody by the Holy Spirit who works in us.” -2 Timothy 1:13-14
This is a powerful episode, and that's putting it mildly. To think that, there was a culture which was wiped out over a thousand years ago, and all that remains of it, is a memory that Picard holds of a lifetime, and a flute. It makes me wonder, "what will become of us?" How will we be remembered? That is something, I think, that is more terrifying to us humans than anything... being forgotten. What's really on the voyager probes, that we've sent out into the vast "unknown" of the Universe?
@1rammstein21 The internet just blew my mind. That was a well written, insightful and dare I say it emotionally vulnerable comment posted to YouTube. Will wonders never cease.
@1rammstein21 Well said! I remember this being the first episode that made me misty-eyed as well. For me it was the first episode that really strayed away from the "Space Theme" & really made me think about other cultures & extinct peoples.
This episode is almost even better when you think about it alongside "Family" where Picard almost wanted to leave starfleet and live a normal life. He knew that he had to stay in, but this shows that he really would have been truly happy and content. It makes the whole situation even more tragic. Simply a perfect episode!
@DADDY2568 watch Star Trek TNG "The Inner Light" and find out, I don't think they ever say what it's called. Probably just "The Inner Light" not sure if it's an orginal score or not though.
It was a "Jump to Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor... and would have different CONCLUSIONS written on it that you could JUMP TO.

ever have a dream where you meet some one and grow old with them. you sing and cry with them. then you wake up and the world tells you that it never happened.
The song and episode are great! The episode was ahead of its time. Think of the meaning of this episode and then think of our present global warming situation. This could be a foretelling of things to come. Let's act now in order to keep this episode from becoming reality. Live long and prosper, Gene Rodenberry!
@carwcc1234 Its similar to The Skye Boat, but its not the same song. Incidently, The Skye Boat isn't THAT ancient, since its about Bonny Prince Charlie who led a revolt against English rule of Scotland in the 1700's
I absolutely love this episode I wanted to walk down the aisle to this beautiful music but I wasn't able to get everything I wanted ( the parents)on my special day. Love it!!!
This is, quite possibly the best episode of Next Gen. The range of motion that Patrick Stewart brings to this. I mean, to have lived in the "real" world most of one's life, then be transported to another ...live an entire life, with children and grandchildren, and suddenly be brought back with the knowledge that all you loved had been gone for a thousand years. I mean, wow. Jay Chattaway wrote a tear jerker of a tune for this episode.
I wish I could hear a symphonic orchestra play this piece in person. Not merely hearing it, but bathing in the sounds produced by the instruments, would be a sublime and fantastic experience.
I think "The Inner Light" deserved to be a two-part TV movie.
Haven't heard this in many years, and haven't seen this episode in even longer. Thanks for this, thank you very much. Hard to believe that TNG has been off the air since 1994. I actually had friends that aren't even Star Trek fans get married to this music.
I love this episode. Good writing, great music. Good friends. Family. Children.
"Put your shoes away." were her last words. Picard's wife is beautiful because she's gentle and kind. He had so much of what he lacked in his other life.
absolutely love this episode, its such a shame that by the next episode it was like it never happened. It was suspose to effect him so much, having a wife and family but yet he never really found someone :(
@chaterboxx226 1. you know picard... he's a very private man. he doesn't let his emotions affect him that much. but when he breaks, he breaks. 2. in the "all good things..." reality he'd married and divorced Dr Crusher. I found that to be enough comfort.
@simplystreeptacular i'm not much of a book person, although I have listened to the audio books with Q more than once each. i'll see if there are any expanded universe novels in audio book format. thanks for stirring up my interest!
Most couldn't even conceive the very thought of living a lifetime in a few minutes as JLP did this episode, much credit goes to the writers for putting this wonderful formant together. Brilliant acting by Patrick Stewart and yes I would have to agree with those who posted about the raw emotion of this scenario which was brought to life by the flute playing. I really truly wish we still had shows like this today that we can all enjoy on this level.
@CantFeelMe Can't do this today. This requires writing and it's requires an audience unjaded by "reality shows" which aren't.It's sad how dumbed down today's tv has become.
one of my favourite next gen moments the solo itself is so compassionate, this is why star trek is probably the best ever franchise lets forget enterprise but this is so amazing
This episode is really just the perfect example of why TNG was perhaps the best TV series ever made. There aren't many shows where I can watch every episode a hundred times, and still be entranced. And this particular episode is beyond beautiful.
@Lilith1777 it's pretty good and I wish I could find the song in MP3 but its no Pale Moon Light from DS9 which in my opinion was the finest episode of star trek ever known.
@Lilith1777 This is the only episode of ST:TNG I've ever seen (someone had recommanded it on a forum), which other ones would you advice which you consider in the same league ?
@idiosyncrazy1980 This is really one of the best. But I also really like "Remember Me", "Face of the Enemy" and "Ship in a Bottle". Of course that is just off the top of my head. The entire run of the show is worth watching.
Watch them all if you can. It was a great series. Out of 7 seasons there's probably 8 episodes or so I didn't care for. The rest are worth watching. Off the top of my head: Where No One Has Gone Before, Q Who, Peak Performance, Who Watches the Watchers, Deja Q, Yesterday's Enterprise, Family, The Game, I Borg, Tapestry, Birthright 1&2, All Good Things. And if you like noir: The Big Goodbye, Elementary Dear Data.
@Lilith1777 This is the only episode of STTNG I've ever seen (someone had recommanded it on a forum), which other ones would you advice which you consider in the same league ?
I agree that this episode would have been a great full feature film. However I would like to see perhaps one day they could still do one. Perhaps an aging Picard, remembering the only real "homelife: he has ever known is either purposely or accidentally sent back in time and has a chance to either save these people or perhaps even die with them (although that would be sad too). Maybe I am wrong on these things, but would like to see this event rememebered in a future film.....
We should all thank Jay Chattaway for fleshing the original tune into a full blown orchestral suite. Sure hearing the flute solo is good, but this just makes it that much more complete an ensemble. You know what every city's symphony orchestra should do on June 16 of every year? Play this at a concert at least once, because this is the only piece of music I would like to hear on Capt. Picard Day.
How this episode could have not been made into a full length feature film is beyond me...
It is one of the most evocative, encaptivating, emotional, thought-provoking pieces of science fiction that I have ever seen.
Whenever I am sad, which has been quite often as my mother died only two weeks before Christmas 2009, I watch this episode and it lifts my heart like nothing else, when Jean Luc watches the rockets launching and his friends come back to speak to him it's just FANTASTIC.
To me this song represents a man looking back at his life, seeing his old friends and loved ones that passed before him. He's able to relive his best memories, be with those he lost and to cherish the memories of those he awaits to greet when they join him. My father passed away Thursday, Febuary 10th and I think of this song, of his memories, of the lifetime he spent touching the lives of others, influencing and inspiring those around him. In honor of my father, Raymond Earl Dickerson.
@paradoxdreamer5 I am so so so so sorry paradox. I am 41, and have never met my father. At least you had a chance to know him, and remember him. Like you, there are many reasons why I love this song as well.
what an incredible piece of music and this episode has to be the best sci fi work of all time. anyone who can watch it and not feel moved has no soul.
My girlfriend at the time watched this with me. I did cry. When she saw me she was flabbergasted and said wow......"how wonderful".....I wiped my eyes and said yes it was and she said "oh yet it was" not being a Star Trek fan but she said "its not so much what I saw....indeed wonderful and I never knew Star Trek was a show like this but I said wonderful because I know I have found the right man , man that can be moved to tears is the man I want to marry" We did :-)

The song and episode are great! The episode was ahead of its time. Think of the meaning of this episode and then think of our present global warming situation. This could be a foretelling of things to come. Let's act now in order to keep this episode from becoming reality. Live long and prosper, Gene Rodenberry!

This is an ancient tune in Scottish history called The Skye Boat Song
carwcc1234 6 months ago
@carwcc1234 Its similar to The Skye Boat, but its not the same song. Incidently, The Skye Boat isn't THAT ancient, since its about Bonny Prince Charlie who led a revolt against English rule of Scotland in the 1700's

@carwcc1234 It is similar but definitely not the same song!

That was beautiful.
That may be the single best episode of any television series, ever.

It was suspose to effect him so much, having a wife and family but yet he never really found someone :(
chaterboxx226 9 months ago
@chaterboxx226 1. you know picard... he's a very private man. he doesn't let his emotions affect him that much. but when he breaks, he breaks. 2. in the "all good things..." reality he'd married and divorced Dr Crusher. I found that to be enough comfort.

@pike666db Better yet, in the Expanded Universe novels, they STAY married. I like the Expanded Universe novels. :)

CantFeelMe 9 months ago 3
@CantFeelMe Can't do this today. This requires writing and it's requires an audience unjaded by "reality shows" which aren't.It's sad how dumbed down today's tv has become.

This episode is really just the perfect example of why TNG was perhaps the best TV series ever made. There aren't many shows where I can watch every episode a hundred times, and still be entranced. And this particular episode is beyond beautiful.

@Lilith1777 This is the only episode of ST:TNG I've ever seen (someone had recommanded it on a forum), which other ones would you advice which you consider in the same league ?
idiosyncrazy1980 4 months ago
@idiosyncrazy1980 This is really one of the best. But I also really like "Remember Me", "Face of the Enemy" and "Ship in a Bottle". Of course that is just off the top of my head. The entire run of the show is worth watching.
Lilith1777 4 months ago
Watch them all if you can. It was a great series. Out of 7 seasons there's probably 8 episodes or so I didn't care for. The rest are worth watching. Off the top of my head: Where No One Has Gone Before, Q Who, Peak Performance, Who Watches the Watchers, Deja Q, Yesterday's Enterprise, Family, The Game, I Borg, Tapestry, Birthright 1&2, All Good Things. And if you like noir: The Big Goodbye, Elementary Dear Data.

Maybe I am wrong on these things, but would like to see this event rememebered in a future film.....
jsgold2000 11 months ago
@jsgold2000 That would be an utterly beautiful way for Picard to die... a far fitter end than Kirk found.
ThePolysyllabist 9 months ago
We should all thank Jay Chattaway for fleshing the original tune into a full blown orchestral suite. Sure hearing the flute solo is good, but this just makes it that much more complete an ensemble. You know what every city's symphony orchestra should do on June 16 of every year? Play this at a concert at least once, because this is the only piece of music I would like to hear on Capt. Picard Day.

How this episode could have not been made into a full length feature film is beyond me...
It is one of the most evocative, encaptivating, emotional, thought-provoking pieces of science fiction that I have ever seen.
Whenever I am sad, which has been quite often as my mother died only two weeks before Christmas 2009, I watch this episode and it lifts my heart like nothing else, when Jean Luc watches the rockets launching and his friends come back to speak to him it's just FANTASTIC.

newtonchan1974 11 months ago
To me this song represents a man looking back at his life, seeing his old friends and loved ones that passed before him. He's able to relive his best memories, be with those he lost and to cherish the memories of those he awaits to greet when they join him. My father passed away Thursday, Febuary 10th and I think of this song, of his memories, of the lifetime he spent touching the lives of others, influencing and inspiring those around him. In honor of my father, Raymond Earl Dickerson.
paradoxdreamer5 11 months ago 23
@paradoxdreamer5 I am so so so so sorry paradox. I am 41, and have never met my father. At least you had a chance to know him, and remember him. Like you, there are many reasons why I love this song as well.
