I live near Ladish Co. and they have a drop hammer that shakes the ground outside of the building (though you have to be about 15 feet from their walls to feel it. That, my friends, is badass.
Please excuse a question from a non industry person , but is it normal for the whole forge to move up an down with the impact when operating like the one in this vid ?
@turboslag Probably shocks. You don't want that machine taking hits from 5000lbs without any kind of shock absorption, it would be like ramming a car into a solid rock cliff face.
@drldrl81 A friend and I were watching the video, and wondered how much they do pay, is it OK to ask? Does the job require a lot of skill so you can go to another shop if yours shuts down? This is a fascinating process.
I work in a forge shop making crafstmen tools. We have 26 hammers. I noticed how you moved the sidematch. Can you tell me exactly how that works? I work like to incorporate into my shop. Thanks.

i work at a forge shop an when i started we still ran 2 board drop hammers they would run just as fast as a steam hammer when the older hammermen ran them. but if i understand right ceco hammers are powered air up not down so how do you stick the rod?
You are right it is air up, and then the ram drops freely, then there are two sensors so the ram knows how high and how low it has to go. Each set of dies are different of course in height wise, so you have to set the sensors according to how tall the dies are.
ahh that makes perfect scense but when i was laid off last winter they put up a ceco hammer they had bought. but they could not figure out how to get the rod to stick in the ram. on the old steam hammers they put in a old set of dies drop the rod down make sure it lines up with the hole in the to of the ram take the rod back up and WHAM it scared the hell out of me first time i watched them do it.
The rod on top of the ram is set in there by just a regular bolt, its a big bolt that is set in the ram and then they screw the rod onto the bolt. We had one hammer that was getting pretty old and it was a 3000 lb ram/hammer and the stem/rod as you call it kept coming undo every so often and alls you had to do was drop the stem back into the ram and take off runnin again. Its pretty amazing how little it takes to make these hammers work.
All the hamers that I am familiar with, there is a brass bushing that seats into the ram and holds the rod. Release the brakes, adn just drop the ram. It the rod seats into the bushing.
@Modelwd45 I was looking for a video of a board drop hammer. I might try to make one. I have a book with a diagram of one. They say, maple was usually used for the board.

I worked at Illinois Forge in the late 70's and we ran three men crews, heater, trimmer, hammer man. The hammer rarely stopped, the heater and trimmer would go round and round behind the hammer man, and exchange in mid lick, forging for fresh steel, as the hammer man pulled one out with his right hand, grabbed the new one with his left. Very high production and great money. We ran old board hammers and lasco hammers, 13 units in the shop, would like to see old board hammers in action again.
I used to work at Federal Drop Forge in Lansing Michigan, back in the mid '70s, It is good to see this, but we worked piece work and the production was a lot higher than what is in this video, one hammered and the other passed him the steel bars. One was the hammerman and he other the heater. The production shown here is much slower than what we did.
