Actually the Lhasa aristocrats pictured here were corrupt and allied to the Chinese and against the Dalai Lamas. The conditions in Tibet were better than any other country and most lived in the Eastern provinces and were nomads and/or landowners not serfs as Maoist propaganda misrepresents. These people forget they killed 60 to 100 million Chinese as well as 15% of Tibetans and continue to kill 280,000 PER YEAR in Chinese concentration camps. Recent BBC films have destroyed it's long reputation.

Wheat is not suitable for the harsh climate of Tibet and the wheat crop failed.
