Saab Gripen should work with the Netherlands. Our Thales Netherlands and our Delft university. Why? Because we won all prices when it comes to aerodynamics, next to this stealth seems to be future air fighters, lucky for us so is anti stealth. Thales Netherlands can spot the F22, F35 and the Chinese J20. Lockheed Martin their fighters (F etc.) are based on Aegis their radar system and their vision of what is stealth. While the JSF is shown as a iron ball on our radar systems, we make in Holland.

Well I sounded like quite the douche with what I wrote, sorry. Probably was arguing in another thread, carried over. I love this plane and think its great. As was the Viggen. (my saab viggen, saab spg were also great, another thread. another saab) I do think there are far better choices however, especialy for the cash. Relations is one way to look at it, but I bet price was also a huge factor! Brazil isnt in any grave danger of air attack so no need to spend big? IMHO.

Wow the grippen beat up on the F16? Hows that possible? The F16 started out in what 1977? So its only 34 years old now? If the grippen were so good it would sell more. Unfortunately its not that good. Its in the top ten, maybe? but well behind others, sorry fan boys. Plus I dont think any saab fighter has a combat record? which is more important then any training excercise or landing on the road sorry!

@Beeba1 the only reason some countrys dont buy jas 39 gripen is because it doesnt hold a lot of weapens.  but no other jet fight will land on a small road and be hidden in a forest like jas 39 does so think of that.

@Beeba1 The reason countries buy american fighter planes is that they want to keep good relations with the US. In many cases, such as the one in Brazil where the government chose F-16 over JAS-39 Gripen, they could sacrifice perfromance for the diplomatic improvement with the US.

Why does Saab not compete in the international sales market? Noone else seems to have their planes. The US was forced to sell the F-16 to countries it did not trust that much because it's export fighter the F-20 Tigershark was out classed by the Mirage F-1.

After that a Swedish JAS 39 GRIPEN fighter shot down 7 of US top pilots in the exercise Cope Thunder (RED FLAG) the US air force realized that their air forces do not hold the measure. On the US air force's webpage, one could read that they must have F-22 in next exercise in order to have a chance against GRIPEN and that this also applied against all other European fighters.

It was also stated that GRIPEN had to be the most cost effective fighter in the world.

This is the whole point with the Gripen. Just load it up with whatever you need for the job. Fly there, press the button, and watch the fireworks. A true swing role multi purpose aircraft! Only needs 7 minutes from touch down to lift off for a refuel and rearmament as well!

Better at what? the two planes are desiged for different purposes.

The Swedish planes are all manufactured for Swedish purposes.

Gripen range / speed = 3000Km / Mach 2+

Rafale range / speed =1800Km / Mach 1,8

Gripen is made for covering bigger Area since Sweden is much longer than France. Also its built for easy maintnance for better ground/airtime.

By the way, Whay does Dassult need help from SAAB when developing nEUROn if the technical expertise is so high in France.

Rafale range = 1850 km( @ high altitude ) and 1050 km ( @ low altitude )

but yes sweden is much longer :) so you should buy rafale for your "sweden purposes"

What you are talking about is the "canard" wings (a smaller wing set in front of that lager supporting wings). The first ones was likely the German "Focke-Wulf Fw 42". However, the real study of "canards" in fighter aircrafts was likely the SAAB 39 Viggen. This is where the Canards were deliberately used to give STOL and manoeuvrability. But I could be wrong in this, please correct if needed.

I live in Singapore & a yr ago our airforce purchased 12 F-15s over Gripen & Eurofighter! Man, Gripens has STOL capability abt 1/4 a runway for F-15. If they bought 40 Gripens instead we'd be littering Malaysia with 3/4 times more bombs when war breaks out!

Singapore is nothing more than a minor dictatorship city-state. It not only has almost no natural resources and is heavily dependent on its neighbors, Great Britian and the U.S. but it's so small that it has to send its militaries to Taiwan for routine training and key excercises.

Nice plane and cool video, Thanks for the upload, That Anti-ship bomb is huge, indeed. Finally the Maverick missiles are assembled and serviced in Europe too, (Hungary). Most Gripens can operate them.

Many folks ~ (kids) here forget that Gripens are fourth gen planes and have many advantages over older, 2 & 3-rd gen jets like the Mig21, Mig29, Tornado, F4, F16, etc.
