@ThoughtsMedia well, before it it just froze at the loading screen and it had vista. now this happens with XP. i want to install windows 7 but that wont work because it needs to restart. ive had him for 1,5 years and after 1 year i installed XP. HELP!
@dylandionrakiman It sounds like you have a hardware failure - yelling help won't do anything. :-) There's no magical fix for hardware failure; you can call HP to see about getting it repaired, but ultimately it will probably end up costing you more than the product was originally worth. This is why I generally purchase extended warranties on laptops - they're hard to fix when something goes wrong.
@ThoughtsMedia :( do u at least know what would fail? because i looked up what teh price for a new hard drive and its about 50 euros (yes im european) so i can still save my laptop if its the harddrive.
@dylandionrakiman You really need to find someone who knows about computer hardware to help you out in person - there's nothing I can do to assist you. It could be any of a dozen things that failed.
@johnmonk66 The Nokia Booklet is a really nice device, but I'm waiting for them to update it with the latest technology - they came out at the end of the first-generation Atom CPUs, etc.
@Cafeblanx Ah, I see. There's a way that you can make the optical drive on your desktop PC accessible over the network - right-click on it and select Share - but unless you already have them networked together, that won't work. And, no offence, but you don't sound very technical - so trying to explain how to set up a network is beyond the scope of YouTube comments. An external optical drive is a much easier and better solution. :-)
@Cafeblanx The usual term is "desktop computer". Goes right along with "laptop computer". :-) Now that I know what you're talking about, how exactly do you want to connect it? So you can get your files to/from it? Or are you wanting to use a bigger monitor and external keyboard?

Would you recommend this model with XP or an Acer Aspire One with 16gb solid state and 1 gig ram.
Basically I'm buying one for my girlfriend and I'm split between the two. All she's going to be using the computer for is iTunes, Firefox and Microsoft Office. Should I get the Acer since it will be faster? Or will the HP keep up with those programs.
I just don't want to get the mininote and it's just TOO slow. I want something that can do everything she needs.

I have hp compaq 6720s laptop and it has Intel centrino 2.10 GHz T8100 processor. 3MB L2 cache, 3GB RAM. Means it is a solid machine specs wise. Isn't it? No, that's not the case - netbooks use processors that are much, much slower than desktop computers, so they're not good for video editing, and high-performance computing. The "net" in "netbooks" stands for "Internet", meaning they're good for Internet-based tasks first and foremost.

I love your review, I was thinking about getting this mini note (considering the price)but after watching your review, I think I'll wait to get the HP2140.... Can you do a review on the HP2140? Thanks and keep up the good work.
I only have experience with the HP Mini 1000, not the Mini 2140, so I can't offer a full opinion. Between the two, I like the design of the Mini 2140 more, but I think the Mini 1000 is a bit smaller/lighter.
I think HP is a good company but what heartbroke me is the HP G6000 which i have i recommend you don't get it the wireless card is starting to give out and the boot time is ok it could be better
Stop! Don't buy a 2133. I loved mine -- which I bought after looking at video reviews like this. It was great, for about six months, Then it just stopped working. A web search of HP forums reveals I am not the only person with this problem, and a bad motherboard is the most likely culprit. Now I am getting crap after sales support from HP. I'd recommend you keep away from this model.
$380 is a good price, but if it's the 1.2 Ghz CPU version, I don't know that I'd recommend it. It just can't run Vista very well. I'd suggest an Acer Aspire One, they're pretty cheap.
There are some phone networks, like AT&T, that are selling netbooks for $50 with a monthly wireless data contract for "everywhere Internet" access. So you end up paying for the netbook over time...
nick is right. videos play fine with it running on xp prof. with 2GB of ram. I tried it out on a friend 2133. this is also including youtube videos also. no skip or pixel distortion. one thing though it does get a little hot after awhile of use and that is b/c of VIA processor. hope this help for others.
Not really. It has a weak CPU and no dedicated GPU. Some games will work at low resolutions - there are demos of Word of Warcraft running on this device - but in general you shouldn't think of it as a gaming laptop.
Trust me, people ask me that question over and over again on every video I make. People want to be able to play WoW everywhere...addicted I guess. ;-)
last week I saw a man playing a horrible first-person shooter on a 2 hour train ride! He had his huge "laptop" that hardly fit on that fold-away tray and he was using his neighbors table for the mouse and its pad... bang, bang, boom! Wish they were addicted to more harmful and productive things
I don't think not waking up when opening the lid is any sort of problem. Just open the lid and tap a key. It wakes up just fine. I am sure most folks can spare 1 second to tap a key.
It's not about the 1 second of time, it's about the industry standard of every laptop starting up when you open the lid - it's simply strange that HP chose to not follow the rest of the industry.
hi man i was wondering can if the hp mini note 2133 has two memory slots for the Ram so that after geting a one i might add up one GB ram to an empty slot?
The CPU is not upgradable. This is not a desktop computer, it's a laptop, and the power and thermal requirements of laptops usually preclude CPU upgrades.
As long as you get the version with the 1.6 Ghz processor, I think it would work. The 1.2 Ghz version that I reviewed couldn't handle DVD resolution files when I tried to play them back.
Many thanks, great feedback! I think I will try this anyway and let you know how it worked in this particular (rare, I agree:)) use. The reality is I need something really cheap that will work - and this may (just: may) be the case. We will see.
a) 1280res - this allows me to view presentations in close-to native res;
b) secondary: prices went down much as HP just released atom-based unit (unfortunately: 1024x600res-only so far), so I can buy this one at say half price.
Q2: Is 1280 res really working vs. 1024 (for some low-intensity use)? Or it is so tiny that it makes it really hard to use?
I would very much appreciate your comments and opinions.
1280 vs 1024 isn't a huge jump in resolution, so I don't think it matters that much. I suggest buying it from someplace that has a return policy - test it out, then return it if it doesn't work.
Great thanks for great review! Apparently you have spent some time with this device so you may know what it can and what it can't...
I am considering buying one using the following logics:
a) I will use it as a portable presentation device - my (ppt) presentations are quite large (up to 1bg) - they use many movie clips, but decoded in relatively low-res (say: 1/4 of dvd quality),
b) if it is (more or less) capable of using vista, it should (with 2mb ram) work?
Well, considering that this device has been superseded by the HP Mini 1000 and the HP Mini 2140, I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone - it's now obsolete. The Atom CPU at 1.6 Ghz has no trouble with DVD-resolution video, so I think it would work with your PowerPoint videos - but I've never run across a 1 GB PowerPoint file in my life, so I have no idea how a small netbook like this would handle it. You're on you're own with that one. :-)
If you rip the DVD to Divx, WMV, or h.264, yes it will play - though not very well as I point out due to the crappy CPU. As for how "fast the internet runs", if you're connected at 54mbps over 802.11g, odds are very good your actual DSL or cable modem is going to be around 5mbps to 10mbps, so that's the bottleneck.
I used this HP for 2 months, ... the screen glares, and the fonts are too small, also it does get too hot. I ended up with an EEE 1000HA, it's a lot better, and cheaper. The HP 2133 could have been done right but it actually sucks... :( too bad... Also check the IBM x61, it's also great!
My gf and I saw this on qvc tv, and she almost fell in love with it, until we started to review it awhile ago. So playing dvds or viewing online flash content is no good you say. Now I'm starting to think twice about it.
Still researching more about it, maybe I'll tell her to forget this mini note...
You know, I think you're right. ;-) Sometimes I get stuck using certain words over and over - it's something I'm trying to work on for future videos. :-)
Thank you very much for the review! But I'm still not sure if I would buy one. My biggest concern is the slow processor. I have the chance to buy one for $210 (not a lot for a poor :p student like me). It has 2GB RAM, 1,6GHz CPU and a 1024x600screen. I hope that the extra 400MHz and a smaller screen to drive will result in a better performance? I'm also thinking to install xp instead of vista to increase performance. What do you think?
I've heard that the 1.6 Ghz model is indeed a better performer than this 1.2 Ghz model. XP would be faster than Vista, but you'd have to find XP drivers for all the hardware - and I'm not sure if those drivers exist or not. You may want to consider the HP Mini 1000 as another choice.
I am a student and am looking for smaller laptop. Which one do you recommend among HP 2133, HP 1035, LG X110 or any other model? Do you think that ULV processor of 2133 is better than the Atom processor, which is common these days in Toshiba, Acer, LG, etc.
MF1757: take a look at the new HP Mini 1000. If you can get by with the 60 GB hard drive, it looks like a great little unit. Or look at the MSI Wind, it comes with a 160 GB hard drive. The six cell battery option on the MSI Wind would allow you to use it for 4-5 hours in class without recharging.
It's definitely better than the VIA 1.2, which sucks, but it might be as good as the VIA 1.6 - I haven't used anything with the VIA 1.6. I tend to think that the VIA processors suck though - I'm much more impressed with the Intel Atom CPUs.
Anybody want to give me their opinion on getting the 160GB 5400rpm Hard Drive or the 120GB 7200rpm Hard Drive? Is trading space for speed worth it? Or is the speed difference really not that huge of a deal?
Hard drive speed matters most when you're doing seeking across it, like scrubbing in video editing - so I'd say that the 5400rpm drive is just fine for the kinds of things you'd use a device like this for.
Unless there's something specific about the HP 2133 that you need, I suggest you look at the HP Mini 1000, which is a better machine overall in most respects - though the 2133 does have a bigger hard drive. The 2133 is a poor host for Vista unfortunately.
do you think maybe u can do a review on the HP Mini 1000 XP series? if u can. i ordered one today and i wanna make sure i got a good one. so far i think its good from other reviews, but this one was very thorough! the other hp mini 2133 reviews were really dumb and didnt really explain anything!
I have a Fujitsu P7010D with a 10.6 inch screen that has an optical drive bay that can be swapped out for a second battery - it totally kicks ass! Which I guess is why Fujitsu changed their design and no longer offers this. Companies do stupid things sometimes.
I was wondering if, in regards to its inability to play video, do you think one of the other versions of these with Linux or XP would do this better? To me, Vista on a small computer like that seems like a recipe for disaster. Even a few of the full size, full featured computers I've used had serious issues running Vista. It's just such a RAM hog.
Could it be more of a matter of "too much OS" rather than "not enough CPU"?
I've had some people make that claim, but because I don't have the 2133 Mini Note any more (I had to send it back to HP), I can't say for sure because I can't test it. I don't know if I fully buy that explanation though because when the computer is playing back media files, the media player (VLC) is using up all the CPU power - the OS doesn't do much of anything when it detects something is using up a lot of CPU power. It's a moot point now tough - get the HP Mini 1000. :-)
The why this machine reacts to lid closing quite frankly should be user configurable! It wouldn't take much for HP to have put an internal magnetic reed switch between the lid and wrist area so when the lid is open or closed the machine would react as per the USER configured properties! HP what a bunch of retards, they knew other out side of education would want to use this machine!
I installed Win xp sp3 and the boot up and shutdown was cut in half.. and it run smoother, I easily Multiple youtube windows=) after 3 windows runnin from youtube its gets a little choppy. Love the review!
hi jason. by now ur probly using ur ordered msi--did u ever consider acer aspire one over msi? i dont understand linux os since i am using windows since birth--thanks-jen
I did try the Acer Aspire One actually - and I found it to be too noisy. The fan was quite loud in comparison to the MSI Wind, and if there's one thing I hate it's noisy computers. So it went back to the store.
Hi. I am thinking of buying a wind or the HP you went over, I am a mac user and obviously as I am a photographer as well I need high image resolution and clarity on quick time videos taken from my mac book pro to show customers. Which would you say out of the 2 you have reviewed work well on imaging and clarity of photos. Thanks and nice vids, shame they sent you a 3 cell on the wind!!
Well, the CPU in the HP Mini Note sucks. The Intel Atom is a great CPU - it can even play 720p WMV videos! 720p h.264 videos seem to be a bit too much for it to handle though. There are some videos out there that show you how to install OS X onto an MSI Wind, so you may want to check that out...
Help, i got a "real" notebook but i cant be bothered to carry it to lessons etc. Do you recommend this as a laptop to take notes, and do spreadsheets + word documents on ?
Netbooks are great for exactly what you mention: taking notes, spreadsheets, word documents, etc. They're small, light, and meant for non-intensive tasks. I'd suggest you look at the MSI Wind however - that's my personal favourite netbook and the one I've purchased myself. I have an MSI Wind unboxing video in my channel...
Just ordered my HP2133 today, eventhough I ordered the 1.6gh, 1gb ram, 6 cell accu version. I'll use it for the university, it's just handy to have something like this to take notes, because I don't want to carry a real laptop around with me. For the "real thing" I have a gaming desktop computer and another family computer to do the work for university, so I hope it'll do what I bought it for. Nevertheless I hope that maybe Warcraft 3 or Morrowind will work on it, for lame luctures :D
No, I don't believe it has any special Webcam software like iSight. I wouldn't recommend this for a college student - the MSI Wind is the best netbook on the market in my opinion, but it probably wouldn't suffice as your one and only computer - though it depends on what you're doing with it. I think a "real" notebook might be better - these small netbooks are designed to be secondary, not primary computers.
do u no wer i can get a charger from and the speccification for the charger..?

You're thinking of RAM. That's different from storage. This netbook has 1 GB of RAM, and 120 GB of storage.

could this laptop play 3D games?
furrypuppy14 2 years ago
Not really. It has a weak CPU and no dedicated GPU. Some games will work at low resolutions - there are demos of Word of Warcraft running on this device - but in general you shouldn't think of it as a gaming laptop.

This system runs much better with an install of Windows XP....even with 1GB of RAM in comparison to Vista.

I don't think not waking up when opening the lid is any sort of problem. Just open the lid and tap a key. It wakes up just fine. I am sure most folks can spare 1 second to tap a key.
lamewing 2 years ago
It's not about the 1 second of time, it's about the industry standard of every laptop starting up when you open the lid - it's simply strange that HP chose to not follow the rest of the industry.

The CPU is not upgradable. This is not a desktop computer, it's a laptop, and the power and thermal requirements of laptops usually preclude CPU upgrades.

Dear Jason
Re-reading your excellent comments I have realized that my "problem description" was misleading:
(i) presentations are indeed much smaller (say up to 10mb files), but these have many embedded movie clips (so altogther use a lot of space);
(ii) the movies are decoded to wma 720x576 format streaming at 1-2mb/s (file size of up to, say 100MB for 5-min movie).
So my problem may be reduced to a single question: do you think that 2133 is capable of playing it within ppt?
Best regards
menthe2009 2 years ago
As long as you get the version with the 1.6 Ghz processor, I think it would work. The 1.2 Ghz version that I reviewed couldn't handle DVD resolution files when I tried to play them back.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Many thanks, great feedback! I think I will try this anyway and let you know how it worked in this particular (rare, I agree:)) use. The reality is I need something really cheap that will work - and this may (just: may) be the case. We will see.
Rgds
menthe2009 2 years ago
If Q1 is yes, what really counts for me is:
a) 1280res - this allows me to view presentations in close-to native res;
b) secondary: prices went down much as HP just released atom-based unit (unfortunately: 1024x600res-only so far), so I can buy this one at say half price.
Q2: Is 1280 res really working vs. 1024 (for some low-intensity use)? Or it is so tiny that it makes it really hard to use?
I would very much appreciate your comments and opinions.
Best regards
menthe2009 2 years ago
1280 vs 1024 isn't a huge jump in resolution, so I don't think it matters that much. I suggest buying it from someplace that has a return policy - test it out, then return it if it doesn't work.
- Jason
ThoughtsMedia 2 years ago
Dear Jason
Great thanks for great review! Apparently you have spent some time with this device so you may know what it can and what it can't...
I am considering buying one using the following logics:
a) I will use it as a portable presentation device - my (ppt) presentations are quite large (up to 1bg) - they use many movie clips, but decoded in relatively low-res (say: 1/4 of dvd quality),
b) if it is (more or less) capable of using vista, it should (with 2mb ram) work?
Q1: yes/no? tbc
menthe2009 2 years ago
Well, considering that this device has been superseded by the HP Mini 1000 and the HP Mini 2140, I wouldn't recommend this device to anyone - it's now obsolete. The Atom CPU at 1.6 Ghz has no trouble with DVD-resolution video, so I think it would work with your PowerPoint videos - but I've never run across a 1 GB PowerPoint file in my life, so I have no idea how a small netbook like this would handle it. You're on you're own with that one. :-)

wait so im confused...first does it play regular dvds if you load them on? and what do think about how fast the internet runs on it?

lilylover911 2 years ago
If you rip the DVD to Divx, WMV, or h.264, yes it will play - though not very well as I point out due to the crappy CPU. As for how "fast the internet runs", if you're connected at 54mbps over 802.11g, odds are very good your actual DSL or cable modem is going to be around 5mbps to 10mbps, so that's the bottleneck.

JeeCeetje 3 years ago
I've heard that the 1.6 Ghz model is indeed a better performer than this 1.2 Ghz model. XP would be faster than Vista, but you'd have to find XP drivers for all the hardware - and I'm not sure if those drivers exist or not. You may want to consider the HP Mini 1000 as another choice.

PLEASE GUIDE...

MF1757 3 years ago
MF1757: take a look at the new HP Mini 1000. If you can get by with the 60 GB hard drive, it looks like a great little unit. Or look at the MSI Wind, it comes with a 160 GB hard drive. The six cell battery option on the MSI Wind would allow you to use it for 4-5 hours in class without recharging.
- Jason

Thanks for guidance. BTW, do you think that Intel Atom 1.6 is better than VIA ULV 1.2 and VIA ULV 1.6?
Thanks
MF1757 3 years ago
It's definitely better than the VIA 1.2, which sucks, but it might be as good as the VIA 1.6 - I haven't used anything with the VIA 1.6. I tend to think that the VIA processors suck though - I'm much more impressed with the Intel Atom CPUs.

Anybody want to give me their opinion on getting the 160GB 5400rpm Hard Drive or the 120GB 7200rpm Hard Drive? Is trading space for speed worth it? Or is the speed difference really not that huge of a deal?
OverCookedDelinquint 3 years ago
Hard drive speed matters most when you're doing seeking across it, like scrubbing in video editing - so I'd say that the 5400rpm drive is just fine for the kinds of things you'd use a device like this for.

Unless there's something specific about the HP 2133 that you need, I suggest you look at the HP Mini 1000, which is a better machine overall in most respects - though the 2133 does have a bigger hard drive. The 2133 is a poor host for Vista unfortunately.

--Brent
rmp5s 3 years ago

Netbooks are great for exactly what you mention: taking notes, spreadsheets, word documents, etc. They're small, light, and meant for non-intensive tasks.
