It makes me sad that some of the commentators on here think that peace is an evil agenda and that wanting peace somehow leads to the persecution of God's people.
I love this lady! She has the sweetest, clearest voice I've ever heard. I've been a fan of hers since I was in secondary school! I've been lucky to enough to see her live in Glasgow 4 times, and she takes my breath away every single time! Even this piece of film can't do her amazing voice justice. The topics of her songs which inspire people to care about the world are just an added bonus! Superb!
made me see Vietnam from a slanted liberal onesided emotional view. Now Communist VietNam is persecuting Christians! She is at it again, using her magnificent voice to stir up emotions. I had to listen to the song twice to be sure. I would be more inclined to believe she cared about peace in Jerusalem if she had mentioned the suicide bombers along with the war machine. In the 60s there was a term thrown around. It was "foggy minded liberal".
She is always there before we are. Listen, we have to stop throwing people off their land and out of their home. God and to all believers, God is beyond and eternal. I know many nuns - thoses commies -- and they tell me. Leave the Palestinians alone. i have been there I agree
I visited Israel and the Palestinian Territories in 1994 and observed that the peace process was working. It began to collapse when a Zionist extremist assassinated Yitzhak Rabin.
@margaretcone You're right there, but hey!! only America can stop throwing people off their land and homes but in fact America is too weak and useless when it comes to the spoiled baby Israel LOL unfortunately Joan the great is dreaming in this song. sallam
I first heard this song sung live by Steve Earle, for whom I have the utmost respect. However, when I heard Joan Baez sing it in San Francisco it brought tears to my eyes, as it does even now as I listen to this video. Her brilliance as an interpreter of song (her own or others) is nonpareil.
I've seen her sing this in concert twice, and both times it had a lot more impact than this video brings. Also, both times she blew away the recorded version on her recent "Bowery" live concert album. She doesn't have the voice she used to, approaching 70 years old, but she has an integrity and presence that glows on stage, now that a certain shiny performance veneer that I noticed in the 70s and 80s has worn away. Also, her band arrangements work wonderfully for her.
Does anyone else find it really funny how these days, Joan Baez' performance is as compelling and articulate as it's ever been, while Bob Dylan sounds like he's gone completely senile?
I just wanted to say that I just got home from Miss. Baez's concert at the Herbst theatre here in San Francisco, and what a show, she is one wonderful entertainer, and she has a great band, they are really good. If she is on tour in any city across the world and you have a chance to catch her, don't miss her, she is a real treat.
I couldn't agree with you more. I saw Joan at the Michigan Theatre in Ann Arbor, Michigan on November 10th, and it was a packed house. I've loved her for 50 years and I finally got the chance to see her live. She is absolutely fabulous!!!
It's very good to hear that someone as young as yourself (20) has become a fan of Joan Baez.. I sometimes think about that.....will the young people in their teens and 20's today come to know of her music and other great folk music.? I hope so, I'm glad that you enjoy her music a lot.
Ive just been to see her for the first time in concert (Tampa, Florida - even though i live in England!)She sang this song there too and with a cough and plenty of tea, but sounded fab.
Ah Joan, I love this song. Let's hope that Israel will be able to lay down its swords forever when that country feels safe from attacks on all surrounding Arab countries.
Israel certainly has a right to exist, and the attacks on it are terrible... But they would do well not to continue to settle in Palestinian land. If they were to do that, perhaps there would be fewer attacks on Israel.
There is no such thing as "Palestinian land". That land belongs to Israel and has legally since 1948. They were attacked and won in 67 and 72. The land the PLO has demanded was never part of a Palestinian state. Its a ploy to drive the Jews into the sea. Read their constitution. It is their stated purpose.
The PLO is hateful, it was bred from the frustration of a dispossessed people. Regardless, walls are being built to cut people off from their water sources. Regardless of their ethnic label, it's a travesty. I find it ironic that the survivors of the Holocaust are now perpetrators of violence and hate against a people.
Israel mata a Inocentes.
The voice definitely isn't the same as 30 years ago. But I personally like it much better now, as the vibrato is not as strong as it used to be, which I think makes the voice even stronger.
Sadly, I could hardly get a word out when I had the chance of a chit-chat after the concert.
But I've got some nice pictures.
Even one of my mum and Joan, which is funny because my mum looked incredibly like her in the 60s, but now she's put quite some weight on. So my pic looks like a slim and a big twin. :-D
When I heard Joan sing this song it brought tears to my eyes. How sad that some see it only as a lament for israel...

I was at exactly this concert - Vienna 2007 - and I remember how much I was touched by this song.
I'm only 20 years old, but I grew up with Joan's music, as both my parents were huge fans.... Seeing her live was such a great experience!!!!
