If there was no one around to tell you that your perception was wrong, does that mean that you are right. an object is always measured by its environment, you could see a piece of string as being 30cm's long, but another could see it being 30.4 or another person could see that string as possibly infinite. so I believe that reality only exist when it has something to interact or measure it.

Harris is great but doesn't specialize in consciousness. If you're really interested in this area of study you should read material by philosophers Searle, Dennett, Chalmers, and biologists Edelman, Crick, Koch. Even physicists like Bohm, Penrose, Stapp - though their ideas are unorthodox they serve to remind us that you CAN talk about quantum theories of consciousness without delving into pseudoscience. Consciousness is a fascinating phenomena, hopefully we'll be able to explain it someday.

The placebo effect is proof of nothing except that there is a placebo effect. Nobody knows what the mechanism behind it actually is. It takes a truly open mind to admit "I don't know". And I don't need to prove anything, since I'm not making any claims. How come nobody has claimed the Randi prize yet?

Stuart Hameroff is a serious scientific researcher into consciousness, and the ideas he's formulated with Roger Penrose in no way suggest we can consciously choose which way the dice fall. They're merely suggesting that consciousness is a quantum mechanical phenomenon. i.e., our brains might be quantum computers. The science is wierd enough without all the Woo :)

That being said, there is a legitimate area of research looking into how quantum processes in the brain may be involved in conscious experience. Harris is great but doesn't specialize in consciousness. If you're really interested in this area of study you should read material by philosophers Searle, Dennett, Chalmers, and biologists Edelman, Crick, Koch. Even physicists like Bohm, Penrose, Stapp - though their ideas are unorthodox they serve to remind us that you CAN talk about quantum theories of consciousness without delving into pseudoscience. Consciousness is a fascinating phenomena, hopefully we'll be able to explain it someday.

It's interesting because, carbon, one of the elements that would require our life, is made in stars and scattered across the universe currently calculated to be at least 14 bil. years. I dont remeber exactly the correct name but the book must be "Raja Yoga - Explanation" or something said to have written a few thousand years ago. I remember reading the same thing told in this video.

philosopy is not science, but science needs it to take it to new areas though, speculation. but philosophy is still just a neat vay to confuze and play neat tricks on and trip up the brain. it needs a context to function. im a grown up organism enough to realize i am limited by my own physiology, unable to grasp the whole shabang. we do live in such a blinding short time but i love and need the mindboggling realization of being matters awareness manifestated. mind you, just watch out for hippies
