The backing choir seems too eletric during the whole song like they were happy excited and angry at the same time .. a bit too dramatic performance from their part LOL But I was happy Tommy went for a more Michael Bolton look than that dreadful Bon Jovi look at the MF. Cool song indeead.
This song is still good. My dad taped the whole eurovision for me this year and I knew every song even though I was only 5. My favorite was Turkey, though.
First of all - I adore his voice! Very powerfull performance, even the song is not that great, but they all there made that song much better than it is (from my opinion). Also, orchestration was fantastic, very effective.
This is song is in my top 7 of that year, but I still think that Greece, Finland, Turkey, Luxembourg and especially Italy were better (actually Luxembourg is one of my favourite in that year, I listen to that song very often and watch to their performance for ''Monsieur'')
As a fan of Tommy since his 'Easy Action' days (1986), I watched ESC 89 with interest. This was my favourite, as it was also a great song. The backing singers helped bring this song to life as they were not content to be just dark shadows in the background. This is a mid-paced song (not a ballad) which starts gently, then builds and builds towards an impressive climax with Tommy's awesome voice holding the final note. A well-deserved 4th place (only 1 point away from 3rd). Well done Tommy!
Not surprising, but can't say I like this one all that much. Perhaps it's too obviously an optimistic ballad for my liking (and the lyrics are extremely unoriginal). I do give the Swedes credit for trying something in this reign - though it feels more like a gospel song to me than anything else.
A great review of the song, my friend :-) (I'm being serious here) - and, yes, that pretty much sums it up for me too. Certainly not a bad song, but nothing truly special either - and its 4th place was a bit overrated, IMO (then again, with the exception of the UK, so is all of the top-5 for that year).
I agree - apart from the UK, I don't think the top-5 of that year really deserved it. It made me think if the juries had been listening to the same songs as me. Personally, though, Yugoslavia in the top-5 doesn't bother me - them winning, though, is another matter. I mean, this was the year of wonderful entries from Turkey, Italy and especially Spain. Another evidence to the 'eccentric juries' display.
Goodness, I thought the UK song was as dull as ditchwater that year, and the Danish one was really good! I even liked the Yugoslav one more than ours. This one I've always thought was rather dull in both tune and harmony, but I really like the performance! Over-the-top but not so much it's silly.
Both the best songs came 9th this year, for me. Odd.
Thanks for the vote of confidence to our Marianna :-) - and, yes, the Italian entry was also fabulous (Anna Oxa, what a voice!). As for your other comments (save for Tommy's performance), I guess that we agree to disagree - for one, the Danish performance was quite entertaining (if just a bit kitchy), but the song itself was quite old-fashioned and by-the-numbers, IMO.
I didn't think much to the UK entry. Sweden was my favourite in '89, Denmark 2nd favourite, Spain 3rd. Also liked the Portugese entry and the Turkish entry was so bad it was good in my opinion.

Angående trumpetaren så var det Urban Agnas i Stad i ljus, det här är nog en i orkestern, vem det nu är.
