Never knew why I liked Dexys Midnight runners but today it clicked, it is the fiddling. US fiddling style is fine but there are subtle differences in Irish and British stylings of it.
@DavidQuantick - Hi David - you worked for the good guys - 'The Sounds' - The NME slagged it to death at the time of release - and then a few years later said it was one of the best albums ever!
TY for the memories- he had an amazing voice- too bad he didn't take off- some great songs- lots of bad ones- sad to see such a gifted vocalist go under :(
Hi. You like Dexys. This is good. I have a challenge. Pick up a guitar/piano/banjo/spoon & play. Record yourself playing a song that you have never played before. A new composition. Play back the recording & sing along straight away. Don't write anything down just make up the melody & words as you go along. Then take one hour to edit/make video/cry. Then upload your song & link to my page. I have started you off. If I can do it anybody can. I used 3 chords & my broken old voice. Let's create.X
@u2mcbride The album was Searching for the young soul rebels . The first and best Dexys album , i think the track was called " Thankfully living in Yorkshire it dosnt apply "
The third album's the best of the lot. Awesome. Lyrics that read like the work of a nutter, but sung with enough conviction for me to believe every word.
Bless you Mr Rowland for injecting such genius into my teenage years.
does any one remember when they played the tower ballroom in birmingham and kev got the hump and stopped playing because the crowd wouldnt stop shouting gino. (about 1979)
great band. and bought soul to the masses.
You dont hve to tell me what she is like...i was there
This is genius and I feel sorry for anyone that missed it first time round and still don't get it. The whole album is a masterpiece and remains one of my favourite albums nearly 25 yrs later. This is the art of Kevin Rowland.
I remember the first time seeing this and thinking, "well I guess they made so much money from Too-Rye-Ay that they could now afford to look all posh and corporate" LOL!
this is a great song, but the best dexys line up was the original one, they had everything, a great sound, great look, just awesome brass section, my fave band of all time by a country mile
When Kevin parted ways with Paul Speare and Jimmy Patterson, it was the beginning of the end. He kept a token brass section and added strings, culminating in the truly awful "Come on Eileen"
A tragedy - they really were the best with Geno, There There my Dear, 7 days too long and the brilliant Plan B. How far can a band fall - this far - sadly.
A work of understated genius. Take no notice of those who dismiss Dexy's after album one or two. All three are meisterworks to be treasured and savoured. Also ignore idiots who think that 'Eileen' or anything off of 'Too Rye Aye' is rubbish because it gets played at weddings. 'How far can a band fall'? What a buffoon!
Grow UP! :) Well, it's a long, long while since anyone said that to me! Believe me, I take it as a compliment. I shall pass the medical help onto you though I think. I would respectfully suggest you get your ears syringed!
I first heard this Dexys back in 82 when my mate put it on Too-Rye-Ay while we played snooker in his living room.I remember on the first listen i thought "Thats Shite."
However,he did know his music. He played it constantly that day.I got me mum to get me it from Woolies the next day.Have been playin it ever since still my No1 album of all time.Thankyou Ross Baxter for the induction into the Greatest Band Ever.
"Well you know how the English upper classes are thick and ignorant?..." This song is mad, but it's also a masterpiece... Amazing to finally see the video.
I brought this album in the bargain bucket-lol-it was played lots and this track was me fav- tell me what's she like-come again-in time in time--l'd like to express myself to say Dexys are fucking brilliant!
I worked in a garage and had Dont stand me down on in the background. A black customer smiled at me and said " wow, someone else other then me has this album, it's the greatest soul album ever made." I agreed and got into trouble for talking about music and Dexys for half an hour.
Exactly why "Too Rye Ay" was massively successful and "Don't Stand me Down" was completely ignored remains a mystery.
It is an extremely good album. My copy was purchased in HMV in Brighton in 1985 about a week after it was released. Did anyone else actually buy one, or did they all end up in the £1.99 bucket?
I met Billy Adams once on a train, bizarrely from New St to Euston with my brother. He denied who he was and really upset us. His missus kept on at him to let on but I think he enjoyed the game.
I interviewed Kevin as well, in a skirt - him not me.
Don't Stand Me Down is a great album. This is my favorite track from the album for obvious reason. It's so infectious and I can never listen to it just once; maybe 5 or 10 times. There is a deluxe 2 disc edition of the CD that includes a DVD of a pair of videos.
No doubt that Don't stand me down is one of the greatest albums ever released. I loved this video, thanks for posting it. Where can I find more videos from this dvd/album?
Great film - haunting, in retrospect when you get to the end shot, and look back on what Giuliani wrought on the once fabulously disheviled city. Hey, the verbal fued between Celtic countrymen is highly entertaining. And I thought only Americans discerned a vast difference between those from the north and those from the south.
There's a copy of the video on a Bonus DVD with the 'Directors Cut' edition of Don't stand me down. It includes the whole talking part at the beginning.
