just so you guys will stop fighting i asked a professional car installation person who knows the book on car audio and subwoofers from left to right, and he said that you have to match the rms of the woofer to the rms of the amp, too little rms will blow your woofer & too much rms will make it sound distorted. that is what he told me.

I do agree that the box can make or break a sub, and yes, I too have a 500 watt amp and hit 143 db with one sub. I just got a new sub also, that i'm sure will be even louder, i'll post a vid of it soon so you can awe at the fact that I know what I'm talking about. How many watts your running to your sub DOES matter. As well as a number of other things.

143 db on the TL @ the windshield, with the windows down. 2Door GMC Jimmy is the vehicle I got that in. + that new sub that I got is a slight bit louder I think *just from guessing with my ears* but I put it in a box that was tuned ~29Hz or so. So it hits lows very nicely :)

It is impossible to blow a sub by under-powering it. What blows the sub is n00bs who think the gain on their amp is a volume knob and they clip the crap out of their subs. If you cloud blow your subs by under-powering them then they would blow when you have the volume turned down.

@thaostrich sure it can, if your amp doesnt have enough juice to push your sub, itll fry your magnet and youll smell copper burning. i.e..a 500 watt amp (RMS) on a 1500 watt woofer (RMS) the louder you turn it up the more likely you are to 'clip' the amplifier. When an amplifier clips it can produce a square wave, which in turn, translates to disstortion (direct short) going to your sub

underpowering will not blow it, not setting your gains properly with a DMM or oscope will blow it due to clipping. a 2000 watt rms amp will only produce 2000 watts at full tilt, it will produce less at lower volume levels, so you are basically telling me I will blow my sub if I don't drive around with my system on full blast? that makes no sense, I know what i'm talking about.

@thaostrich under powering your sub will make is like a dc signal causing the amp to put out a constant wave causing the sub to clip, in turn that means that you are pushing the peek power of the amp which is bad, you will ruin the sub and amp. You are essentially starving the sub of power.

none of you fucking get it, do you? you CANNOT blow a sub by giving it too little CLEAN power. If you turn your gain up until your amp clips, then you will be sending DC power into your woofer, causing the coils to heat up and fry. CLEAN UNCLIPPED POWER at less than RMS will not damage your sub. If it did, then you would be killing your sub by not turning your stereo up whenever it's on. Buy a fucking oscilloscope. Clean power cannot damage a speaker unless you are severely overpowering it.
