Your argument is flawed. The "The masses are always right" only works with guessing of quantities in a container, the sum of all the opinions is always closest to the right answer. The logic behind that is sound, everyone get the same knowledge through their eyes, and then does a guess. This logic does not apply to more complex questions, such as is there a god? Humans make judgments on knowledge. We get knowledge about the world first from our parents, where your parents religious?

@Marcaurelix you are wrong when you say laws cannot become theories. The structure go facts, then a hypothesis is derived from those facts. When a hypothesis can be proven it becomes a law, then after a lot of scientific scrutiny the concept becomes a theory. That is what I was taught regarding how a hypothesis becomes a theory.
Theories are made up of many things, such as, Observations, facts, etc. A theory is a model that takes in everything that is known about a phenomenon, then uses that 'data' to explain it. However, theories aren't absolute, thus aren't laws. Although the law of gravity holds (in most situations), the 'theory' that explains it isn't complete yet (however, we do know that gravity is caused by mass interacting with space, 'warping it').
A law, at least as I understand the term, is something that has some very concrete evidence to support it (law of Magnetism, law of gravity, or other laws of nature). Another law, could be the 'law of Religious idiocy'. Now,that is one concrete law to be sure!! ;)
That is somewhat correct, I suppose. A more accurate definition, I think, we be to say that a law is a collection of theories which work together to explain a phenomenon. Of course, theories have to have very good evidence for them also, so your definition isn't terrible.
Well, a phenomenon usually has one theory that is used to explain it. That theory is the one that has the most scientific consensus behind it(most scientists agree with it). Conflicting theories have, at least for the most part, different definitions of what constitutes a given phenomenon. For something to become a law, the theory that explains it would have to be as accurate as humanly possibly. I would argue that laws have to do with the 'effects' and not the theories that explain them.
Actually, theorys are derived from laws, they don't become them. For example: the LAW of gravity. It is fact. The THEORY of gravity is an explanation of that fact. Two seperate things.
I never meant to say that a theory becomes a law. A law has to do with something that occurs in nature, a theory describes the 'mechanics' behind it. For example, the law of gravity would state that something of lessor mass, would fall toward something of greater mass. The theory of gravity explains why this occurs (Warping of space for example). Is that better?

Looking forward to it :) Although I find Richard Dawkins a bit arrogant in his approach, he is far less dogmatic than anything coming out the 'intelligent design' crowd, couching their supposed 'evidence' under the umbrella of science, while denying science at the same time. I would like to add, however, that the scientific method, is itself being undermined by corporate funding + moneyed interests. This is something which should concern all scientists in regards to integrity.
Dawkins is way too arrogant for my liking. There are nicer people in this world who do a better job at advancing atheists ideas in one day than anything Dawkins could do in his lifetime. Your argument is flawed. The "The masses are always right" only works with guessing of quantities in a container, the sum of all the opinions is always closest to the right answer. The logic behind that is sound, everyone get the same knowledge through their eyes, and then does a guess. This logic does not apply to more complex questions, such as is there a god? Humans make judgments on knowledge. We get knowledge about the world first from our parents, where your parents religious?

@Marcaurelix you are wrong when you say laws cannot become theories. The structure go facts, then a hypothesis is derived from those facts. When a hypothesis can be proven it becomes a law, then after a lot of scientific scrutiny the concept becomes a theory. That is what I was taught regarding how a hypothesis becomes a theory.

In general, both a scientific theory and a scientific law are accepted to be true by the scientific community as a whole.
But a theory is much more complex and dynamic than a law.
A law describes a single action, whereas a theory explains an entire group of related phenomena.
But you're right that some laws, such as the law of gravity, can also be theories when taken more generally.

Theories are made up of many things, such as, Observations, facts, etc. A theory is a model that takes in everything that is known about a phenomenon, then uses that 'data' to explain it. However, theories aren't absolute, thus aren't laws. Although the law of gravity holds (in most situations), the 'theory' that explains it isn't complete yet (however, we do know that gravity is caused by mass interacting with space, 'warping it').

A law, at least as I understand the term, is something that has some very concrete evidence to support it (law of Magnetism, law of gravity, or other laws of nature). Another law, could be the 'law of Religious idiocy'. Now,that is one concrete law to be sure!! ;)

That is somewhat correct, I suppose. A more accurate definition, I think, we be to say that a law is a collection of theories which work together to explain a phenomenon. Of course, theories have to have very good evidence for them also, so your definition isn't terrible.

Well, a phenomenon usually has one theory that is used to explain it. That theory is the one that has the most scientific consensus behind it(most scientists agree with it). Conflicting theories have, at least for the most part, different definitions of what constitutes a given phenomenon. For something to become a law, the theory that explains it would have to be as accurate as humanly possibly. I would argue that laws have to do with the 'effects' and not the theories that explain them.

Actually, theorys are derived from laws, they don't become them. For example: the LAW of gravity. It is fact. The THEORY of gravity is an explanation of that fact. Two seperate things.

I never meant to say that a theory becomes a law. A law has to do with something that occurs in nature, a theory describes the 'mechanics' behind it. For example, the law of gravity would state that something of lessor mass, would fall toward something of greater mass. The theory of gravity explains why this occurs (Warping of space for example). Is that better?

Looking forward to it :) Although I find Richard Dawkins a bit arrogant in his approach, he is far less dogmatic than anything coming out the 'intelligent design' crowd, couching their supposed 'evidence' under the umbrella of science, while denying science at the same time. I would like to add, however, that the scientific method, is itself being undermined by corporate funding + moneyed interests. This is something which should concern all scientists in regards to integrity.

Dawkins is way too arrogant for my liking. There are nicer people in this world who do a better job at advancing atheists ideas in one day than anything Dawkins could do in his lifetime. For example some scientists in India are doing great job fighting against so called Gurus and teaching people about the secret behinds their "magic". All his done without name calling. Scientists like Dawkins are way to emotionally involved to understand how to talk to the religious crowd the right way.

I know that when I believed, I felt Dawkins was arrogant, cold, and ineffective. Then I started actually listened to him. I went through the same thing with James Randi.
It seems very much like when you have a problem with Richard Dawkins, it's because you don't like _what_ he's saying, not _how_ he's saying it.
For example, the book title: "The God Delusion." It does seems arrogant, but when you think about it, it needs to be said.
