I actually think it would be interesting to see your perspective of Stargate as you go, instead of with foreknowledge.
Even more fun would be you seeing a confusing episode without any context, and see if you, with your vast TV SF knowledge, can figure it out. If so, great. If not, hilarity ensues!
When I originally saw Body Swap and that milkshake and chocolate bar popped out the dispenser I pissed myself laughing so hard and so long that my friend watching it with me thought I'd gone insane.
It must have been something to do with the build up, or the fact I totally didn't see it coming, but I really fucking lost it. Never laughed that hard before or since. Couldn't even watch the rest of the show until later - I shit you not.
@swiftkillz I haven't, so I'm afraid it's on the short list of stuff I'm excluding for the time being. I don't want to talk about a show I'm not familiar with.
@sfdebris I think the best Stargate episodes are the funny ones. E.g. "Space Race", "Window of Opportunity" (trope: time loop) and "200". Although in order to fully appreciate them you should watch more of Stargate. And for 200 you should have watched at least a couple of Farscape episodes.
@sfdebris Stargate SG-1, and for that matter and for the exact same reasons the re-imagined Battlestar Galactica, are emphatically not worth your time. I watched Stargate for years because there was nothing better on, and looking back now I see that the show's writing was motivated by nothing more than the melodrama of the week. Both SG1 and Re-BSG were shows in which the character appeal was founded on the characters' reassuringly never growing or changing; essentially Garfield IN SPACE.
what show were you watching. "And melodrama if the week", have you seen star trek? Sg1 has one main enemy almost throughout. I guess we can call it a difference of opinion
@swiftkillz The Thundercats had one main enemy throughout, too. Didn't mean he wasn't a cartoonish caricature. Real development in Star Trek characters, even in the better series, wasn't always present either, but in those shows the character drama wasn't driving such a high percentage of the episodes. As "Confused Matthew" would put it, the fulcrum of a good Star Trek episode is the "Star Trek Idea".
@swiftkillz (Continued) The characters didn't necessarily need to grow to make the story satisfying because the problems of the week were usually either material or if they were human the "human" in question was an alien guest star. This also allowed the shows to avoid re-treading the same ground with a main character over and over. Stargate SG-1 started out trying to have interesting weekly issues, but quickly devolved into being about how the characters dealt with this season's cold war.
Up a few hours early to make up at least a little for what happened on Tuesday. Hopefully today will be smooth sailing.
FYI: July and August are going to be busy with the Trek films, but I'm working to get series 7 up September 1st and I'll try to get at least 8 done that month too.
