it's really unfortunate that all these good runners like bryshon and obea moore have such short careers... hopefully bryshon can recover and make a comeback
All you guys seem to forget about other High School phenoms that didn't pan out. Remember Obea Moore? 45.14 as a JUNIOR? Olympic trials? Michael Johnson called him the "heir apparent." 20.7 200m, sub 45 relay splits (44.8) and 1:48.9 800m. What a shame he couldn't make the transistion. What about Michael Granville? 1:46.45 800m? I hope Nellum avoids the problems.
Well, as far as I know about Obea is he couldn't make the SAT 700 to gain entrance in USC. He then attended Long Beach City College for a semster or two and dropped out. I swa he injure himseld running the 800 at Arcadia and he never seemed to recover. Granville had a few unimpressive years at UCLA and never improved his PRs. Bad coaching I think.
Yes, it was in the prelims and Granville ran 'only' 1:50 in the finals, but I don't think it took anything away from the record, it just didn't make for as exciting a final. It's always amazing to see an athlete break a record, just like all the records this year from German Fernandez, Christine Babcock & Jordan Hasay.
It would have been picture perfect to rin it in the finals so it could have capped a legendary prep career. He happend to prep at the same high school as I did.
Sure, but that really doesn't take away from the achievement. You went to Bell Gardens? considering the location of the school and the other challenges face by living in that district, his is a pretty great acheivement when you think of what he did in his time there. I heard a story that his father was an ahole, I don't know if it's true or not, but I was told that when he lost to Aaron Richberg as a Jr., his dad berated him and threw his medal in the trash. I hope that's just an idle story.
I have spoken to his father and he is a very serious person when in comes to training. The throwing of the medal I dont know. I believe his father was living Michael Jr's life vicariously trying to fulfill his own dreams thrue Michael Jr. It was quiet depressing entering high school because he holds every record from the 100-1600 by a decisive margin.
"I believe his father was living Michael Jr's life vicariously trying to fulfill his own dreams thrue Michael Jr."
If that's the case, it's a shame. It also makes the story that much more believeable. I saw that race too and Richburg ran a great last 200m to edge Granville 1:48.40 - 1:48.47 in the State meet final. I also saw him run 46.59 in the 400 and I know he ran a 21+ 200m. It's just curious that he never made an improvement after high school. Makes you wonder about 'dads' influence.
Yeah. But anyhow he is a will alwayd be a national prep legend. Look at who wins most of the NCAA championships, guys who where not the fastest out if high school its the ones who continue to improve.
His father knew what he had in Michael Jr. With that being said Michael would not travel with the team would not train with the team, his father would train him at Bell Gardens Elementary (off campus about 2 miles from the school) in a secluded grass area and would not let anyone on the area, not even as a spectator.
The saddest story of a former HS star is that of David Mack. A two-time California State Champion @ 800 meters, he went on to star at Oregon and still has the third fastest 800 in US history (1:43.35) & once ranked 3rd in the world. He got 14 yrs for being involved in the LAPD Rampart corruption scandal and is rumoured to have played a role in the murder of Notorious B.I.G. Mack admits being a Blood. Guess you can take the boy outta South Central, but you can't take South Central outta the boy
I do too, but I just read he pulled a muscle (not too severely) in his first relay race of the season, so let's hope he recovers quickly and can continuee to develop, but let's face it, Wariner is a rare find...
I saw him run at arcadia. He is so sick. He has the perfect form. His sprint medley relay that set the national record was sick too. Props to him and long beach poly
we are only able to compare him to wariner if the two guys race. that being said, Nellum is one of the greatest runners of the last decade. and as for wariner, he is so fast that he smokes marijuana before races to ensure that he won't beat his competition by to much. Clyde Hart, by the way, is the crimelord, drug ring organizer that helps his athletes get sponsorships by threatening major sports companies.
The reason he didnt sign with Baylor was partly because they dont have enough money due to scholarships they gave out in previous years and USC has the runner up in the NCAA in the 400 meters-Lionel Larry with a time of 44.7. Also NCAA 200 meter finalist Ahmad Rashad and highly ranked prep hurdler Terry Prentice also will be at USC next year.
Because of the USC mystique. LBP is a huge recruiting ground for the Trojans and many of their footballers go to SC. And SC isn't a bad track school. Check their team results in the last few NCAA championship meets, they've finished well.
The difference between him and Michael is that Jeremy went under 44 seconds when he was 21, Michael on the other hand, didn't go under 44 until he was 31.
I don't want to disrespect anybody, but that kid is something else. He's way faster than me though. But to want to be the greatest he must love to compete, love running, and have a hard work ethic. Michael Johnson and Jeremy wariner both posses those qualities, which is why they accomplished what they did. It is also why Jeremy will remain the Dominator in the 400 until he retires.
If he even thinks about beating Wariner, it's a must that he has to head down to Texas. And that's to Baylor of course, with the best one-lapper coach in history; Clyde Hart. Don't think he can beat Wariner though because he ran 45.57 in HS. It is the 4th fastest time in Texas High School History. Also ran a 20.48 in 200 at that same meet. Experience does kill. He won't do it if he goes to USC.
I totally agree. When you produce Michael Johnson, Jeremy Wariner, and Sanya Richards, you have to be doing something right. It's kind of disrespectful to talk about Bryshon, who's a great athlete, beating Jeremy Wariner. Don't forget Lashawn Merrit and Xavier Carter both ran fast times in high school, and neither have even come close to beating Jeremy Wariner.
I don't doubt that Bryshon's going to get better, but at the same time Jeremy Wariner gets faster as time passes by. He's already starting to break into uncharted territory, running under 44 seconds so early in his career.
God damnnn

Yeah, that's right. I think it'll be a long time before anyone goes 1:46 again. Incidentally, I saw that race.

wariners pr in the 200 is 20.10 so even if he gets a lil fastre wariner still is faster with his closing speed cause nellum only runs a 20.43.

can take down wariner in the 400 in a few years time as he clearly has the 200 speed to do, as well has a smooth 400 technique with no breakdown
