god i hate diesel trains, they may be more powerful and efficent and all that shit, but they just dont have the same history and feel of seeing them run, i've never been able to see any real steam trains pulling all the express trains and frieght, the only ones i've seen were at museums,(or however you spell that, lol) so it would be cool to see steam loco's to come back into service, i mean, just imagin seeing the challenger engine running again or something, that would be cool
But diesel not more powerful diese -eletric is powerful, but I love steam see with interal combustin if the band doesn't push the piston down then engine stalls, as for a steam engine the constent PSI will either push piston down or cause the cylinder to fail and have rivvets(front makes the two Vs look like w sorry) fly like bullets.
@kirbyfan600 yeah, but the cost of running one challenger or bigboy is probably more expensive than 4 diesel's, thats why if they need more power, they just add more units, thats the sad part of it all :(
@Amtrak1194 yeah, but the cost maintenance is the difference, and maintenance comes around more often that buying it right? the maintenance of a big boy or challenger surpasses a diesel, not to mention the fact that for fuel, steam trains take two types, while diesels take 1, gas, or diesel fuel, whatever you may prefer to call it, while steam trains its coal/wood/oil and water, *sigh* i just wish steam trains ran again, then again, most if not all of us here do too
like we could compare a P42 Genesis with a Big Boy and there would be no competition for power.
however for cost effectiveness and speed P42 by it's self really makes Big Boy seem obsolete [BY IT'S SELF. however if u couple on P42 to the Coast Starlight ( 11 coaches Los Angles to Portland) it would stall and then blow its engine]

The DDA40X was the biggest and most expensive diesels to run!!
I still love the DDA4OX's though but not as much as the Challengers or Big Boys!!!
