  • The sax player upstages the best 2 guitarists in the world. What a performance by them all. Just being around to hear this on utube makes life great!

  • Anyone know how I can get a recording of this so I can play it in my car? This is the absolute best version of a great song!

  • Absolutely awesome music! Anyone who doesn't get moved on several levels by this must be dead!

  • I think, or rather i know Mark Knopfler is a far better guitarist than Clapton

  • @miloman51 clapton innovated in the blues realm...he is technically proficient. ive seen them both live and clapton has a sound and presence that makes him superior.

  • Good gravy that sax is something.

  • 3 boys/girls haven't found their Juliet/Romeo.

  • Just love the sound of that guitar of Mark´s.

  • If this song doesn't get you to fall in love with the best music in the world... nothing will.

  • When you gonna realize, Juliet?

  • he was born in scotland, but raised a Geordie. thats why he's mentioned Newcastle alot in his interviews and in his songs.

  • Marks's voice seems apathetic, but it's so wonderful and smooth. The words are just...RIGHT. And the fact that Clapton is there makes it even more perfect.

  • Best Groups and music come all the way from England, period. And I Say this as an italian.

  • @HisAirness14 And I agree you as a French :P

  • @HisAirness14 I agree but you probably mean Great Britain. Mark Knopfler's Scottish.

  • @TheOlek92 Yeah I Know, I'm European. :D Sorry, my Bad. (:

  • Comment removed

  • @TheOlek92 He's a Geordie - not Scottish

  • You can tell by the look in the musicians eyes that they KNOW this is the best version. They could feel it and it made the performance that much better. I dare somebody to find me a better saxophone solo on YouTube!

  • une pure merveille...

  • Wow, the intro... Best romantic song. Ever.

  • this song is heartbreaking, and i love the intensity in mark knopfler's face from 10 mins

  • My knight in shining guitar. Ah Mark....

  • love is great.

  • Very classy of Clapton to hold the reins.

  • Mark Knopflers...take a look at his guitar !...

... and his voice ...! In any case: it's a Fantastic performance !

  • there is not such thing as the greatest ever in music ... music evolves and so its adherents; music is bigger than any artist and cannot be contained or controlled because it is an expression of the spirit and soul of mankind; great, great concert btw this one was

  • @BusyBeingFabulous One of the most beautiful comments I ever red here on YT.

  • It's Knopflers song, so he should play it. End of discussion:)

  • che canzone stupenda ..

  • @anthonyparlov that's because Mr. Knopfler is god and Mr. Clapton isn't.

  • @anthonyparlov I'm a huge Clapton fan but if I want to see him play a solo, I go and watch Clapton videos. Btw Eric played rhythm guitar on many occasions for Mark and he never fancied playing Mark's solos and the other way round.

  • goose bumps!! Wow !

  • This is by far the best live version of this song I've ever heard, much better than the 1993 'On The Night' version with all that pedal steel nonsense, I wish they would release this entire concert on DVD or Blu-Ray, surely with a bit of digital treatment they could tidy up the sound?

  • @MattScales Oooops, there is a DVD of this gig, I'm gonna buy it now!!!

  • I'm completely in love with this song (and this version). There are no words to discribe it. Perfection, that's all.

  • Mark and Clapton on the same stage? i'm surprised it doesn't catch fire or explode or something, how can you find 3 ppl in this world who dislike this?

    also the amazing sax.....

  • Sheer brillance but sad to see Eric Clapton just playing rhythm guitar and UPSTAGED by the amazing saxophonist.

  • @secretrider1 Actually the first note I heard from Mr. Clapton was at 7:51. I'll tell you what I think would be really sad: Mark not playing the final solo and letting Eric Clapton doing it. Actually I believe Eric Clapton would shame himself by trying that. This song needs melody, not some blues poorly improvised pentatonics nonsense.

  • excellent, Chris White is a sax god.

  • wow

  • wow...you and me babe, how 'bout it

  • wow

  • 2 badass sax players this guy and the live sax player for pink floyd

  • @viperlegendkiller This saxophonist; Chris White was going to be Pink Floyds sax player on the Division Bell tour but had a motorcycle or bike accident before hand so they got Dick Parry instead who had played on earlier Floyd songs like 'Money' and 'shine on your crazy diamond' and had been on previous tours with them.

  • this is what used to be music

  • what's the name of the guy on the sax??

  • 3 guys never falled in love.

  • 2:31

is the camera man right behind mark a midget?

  • The best version of an all time great song.

A poet, a musician, an arranger...he has it all.

  • Such a good song :) I love to quote it

  • Magnifique

  • I love the end of this song. Final guitar solo.

  • where are this people ????this group????

  • @iodimdim - Not sure about your question, but the singer/guitarist is more active than ever. Toured this spring/summer.

  • @DogSwede1 and toured as good as always... 've been to his concert... just amazing!!

  • @DogSwede1 - Saw him in Minneapolis in April. I bought tickets 9 months in advance, and it was even more incredible than I expected. I am 22, and my generation just doesn't make music like this.

  • @DogSwede1 i'm going to listen he and dylan in padova! 9/11/2011

  • love u t

  • @iodimdim :

Are you serious? You don't know Dire Straits? Their album "Brothers In Arms" was once the biggest selling album ever in the U.K. They were brilliant. Look 'em up!

P.S. : Chris White's sax solo here is one of the most beautifully constructed and played I've ever seen.

  • @ghb61 They where even the first band to release an album on CD ;-)

  • @iodimdim They are the sultans, the sultans of swing

  • @iodimdim Are you joking? Thats one of the best Bands ever

  • @iodimdim @DogSwede I believe Mark is continuing his solo career and collaboration spree (remember Emmy-Lou Harris) and the rest of the band has teamed up to do Dire Straits songs in their own context. I believe John is doing the singing and some of the guitar playing now - wont' be like before but then nothing will be unless they actually get back together the lot of them.

  • one word.... CLASS

  • What a rush and a honor, and privilege to be playing this song in front of 80,000 people live in London and countless around the world. I would be so proud of myself.

  • This is a truly great performance.

Romeo & Juliet is a demanding composition, not only requiring expert orchestration but a high degree of expression and feeling.

    thank you for this.

  • This is a really great version, it's just a shame the gig was a rush job and the sound isn't great, great sax solo and that little piano run at 8:18 is the icing on the cake, missing from the later version.

  • Mark = no arrogance = talent.

  • Thanks for this wonderfull good Q upload, I fell in love with this live version when I firt heard it at the Mandela concert and my VHS tape is destroyd in the mean time;-) But this peace of music has not lost it,smagic to me,thx for you tuve an +DogSwede for the Q upload (again);-)

  • @Choefoe that should be "piece" peace all ;-)

  • hmmm, so there are 3 retards who don't like this...

    Probably techno-retards!

  • Puff...It's way better than the studio version.. :)

  • simply amazing... It's perfect.

  • that was the best romeo and juliet version i ever heard!

  • Love ECs' little fillers, just f'in' WOW all over the park!

  • It is the very best version of this song!!!

  • awesome. yet to see a better live performance anywhere!!!

  • '(...)when you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong?, Juliet(...)'...Cuándo t vas a dar cuenta de que no era el momento adecuado?

  • I might flag this video for pornographic content. The Saxophone solo, equals to porn.

  • I lost the video I had of this so thanks for sharing it. Superb song and brilliant concert

  • jadorrrrr !!!!! mark t trop fort

  • Saxophone is the most underrated musical instrument. Simple magic...

  • "Julie I'd do the stars with you baby, anytime"

that verse brings a tear to my eye every time I hear this version of the song. And yeah, I'm a 21 year old guy

  • @lslh88 With the amount of feeling Knopfler and the others put into this song, it isn't surprising it has that effect...If you look right around the time Knopfler is singing that line, you can see he too has tears in his eyes.

  • OMG, beautiful song, and the musicians... wow. Great :D.

  • my God two of the best!! in one place singing possibly the best song of all time good times although being a mere 5 years old at the time i wish i could have been there

  • Very Good. Dire Straits and Eric Clapton know make music

  • This is without a doubt the best version of the song! would kill to see this live!

  • I remember seeing this live in '88. I had goosebumps as I was scrambling to find a blank VHS to record it! hahaha It still gives me goosebumps.

  • timeless! inspirational sax solo - well balanced

  • ~~ GOOSEBUMPS <3 ~~

    Beautiful song!!!

  • I agree with rohanay56, when i watched this live in 1988 I could almost cry about the beauty of this version, especially the sax solo!

  • the best song

  • Mark looks like a cross between jerry sinefield and Kramer with blond hair.

  • "And all I do is miss you and the way we used to be

all I do is keep the beat, and the rockn roll company

and all I do is kiss you, through the bars of a rhyme

...Juliet, I'd do the stars with you any time"

"You and me babe...how about it...."

    THX for the upload.

  • Thanks you for the HQ upload! I love this song and this live version is just ...♥ :)

"...When you gonna realize it was just that the time was wrong..."

  • This is the best version of this song. Knopfler deliver a nice and romantic solo at the end of the song and never before been heard on other versions. The sax solo is great as always.

  • excelent!

  • Love the sax-solo!

  • yeah fantastic

  • Chris White on the sax takes this song to a whole new level and of course theres always mark....

  • Saw & recorded the entire concert. This is one of the best love songs written and performed with one of the best short Sax solos I have ever heard. Great song, great concert great performances.

  • Une des prestations, la plus sublime de cette superbe chanson lors de ce concert en faveur de Nelson Mandela !

    D'une rare intensité !

    Tout simplement : GRANDIOSE

  • I learned to play guitar by rewinding and watching this performance by Dire Straits & EC on a VHS tape (taped off of TV) about a million times...thank you for posting this! This show featured the best versions ever of a bunch of their songs - WHY IS THIS NOT AVAILABLE ON CD & DVD???

  • Thank you so much. This is awesome. Saw Mark live at the Bowl of Brooklands, New Plymouth, New Zealand. It was such a great concert

  • what a wonderful music!

  • This IS the best version of this song

  • @Harrisononthesack I toally agree!!!

  • this will always be one of my favourite songs.

  • Thanks for this - I remember watching this on TV when it happened and being absolutely awestruck - this is one THE very best concert moments!

  • same goes for me;-) thanks DogSwede for the upload

  • Mark Knopfler will always be one of the greats!

He is one of my all time hero's, and this is one of his best songs.

  • Who's the saxophonist ?

  • His name is Chris White. :)

  • Thank U

Is he also the one who plays the Sax in "Your latest trick" ?

  • True. He played with Dire Straits during the Brothers in Arms tour -85, and at the On Every Street tour -91/-92. And on the albums. :)

  • @Kinslaya : The late great Michael Brecker played sax on the album version of "Your Latest Trick."

  • @Kinslaya On Brothers in Arms (album) who played the famous saxophone part was Michael Brecker.

  • And when he shall die, take him

And cut him into little stars

And he shall make the face of heaven so fine

That all the world shall be in love with night

And pay not worship to the garish sun

  • Thank you SO much of posting one of the best moments in music I've ever witnessed (I love Cole Porter, Mozart)!

    Thanks again!

  • "...all I do is kiss you through the bars of a rhyme..."

thank you mark...and thank you dire straits...:)

    this song is eternal...

I can believe that Eric and Mark are touching it together... is real ?

    I really can't believe this

  • The best quality of this version on youtube! Thanks so much!!

  • Of course this is one of my favorites, the funny thing is a few years ago when I saw Mark at NJPAC when he started playing this, it was the men who jumped up and started cheering. I thought it was the sweetest thing.
