@miloman51 clapton innovated in the blues realm...he is technically proficient. ive seen them both live and clapton has a sound and presence that makes him superior.
Marks's voice seems apathetic, but it's so wonderful and smooth. The words are just...RIGHT. And the fact that Clapton is there makes it even more perfect.
Hi guys i did a cover of an fingerstyle arrangement of Wonderful Tonight (Ulli Boegershausen version) please check it out, it's called (Eric Clapton) Wonderful Tonight - Rees
You can tell by the look in the musicians eyes that they KNOW this is the best version. They could feel it and it made the performance that much better. I dare somebody to find me a better saxophone solo on YouTube!
there is not such thing as the greatest ever in music ... music evolves and so its adherents; music is bigger than any artist and cannot be contained or controlled because it is an expression of the spirit and soul of mankind; great, great concert btw this one was
@anthonyparlov I'm a huge Clapton fan but if I want to see him play a solo, I go and watch Clapton videos. Btw Eric played rhythm guitar on many occasions for Mark and he never fancied playing Mark's solos and the other way round.
This is by far the best live version of this song I've ever heard, much better than the 1993 'On The Night' version with all that pedal steel nonsense, I wish they would release this entire concert on DVD or Blu-Ray, surely with a bit of digital treatment they could tidy up the sound?
Mark and Clapton on the same stage? i'm surprised it doesn't catch fire or explode or something, how can you find 3 ppl in this world who dislike this?
@secretrider1 Actually the first note I heard from Mr. Clapton was at 7:51. I'll tell you what I think would be really sad: Mark not playing the final solo and letting Eric Clapton doing it. Actually I believe Eric Clapton would shame himself by trying that. This song needs melody, not some blues poorly improvised pentatonics nonsense.
@viperlegendkiller This saxophonist; Chris White was going to be Pink Floyds sax player on the Division Bell tour but had a motorcycle or bike accident before hand so they got Dick Parry instead who had played on earlier Floyd songs like 'Money' and 'shine on your crazy diamond' and had been on previous tours with them.
@DogSwede1 - Saw him in Minneapolis in April. I bought tickets 9 months in advance, and it was even more incredible than I expected. I am 22, and my generation just doesn't make music like this.
Are you serious? You don't know Dire Straits? Their album "Brothers In Arms" was once the biggest selling album ever in the U.K. They were brilliant. Look 'em up!
P.S. : Chris White's sax solo here is one of the most beautifully constructed and played I've ever seen.
@iodimdim@DogSwede I believe Mark is continuing his solo career and collaboration spree (remember Emmy-Lou Harris) and the rest of the band has teamed up to do Dire Straits songs in their own context. I believe John is doing the singing and some of the guitar playing now - wont' be like before but then nothing will be unless they actually get back together the lot of them.
What a rush and a honor, and privilege to be playing this song in front of 80,000 people live in London and countless around the world. I would be so proud of myself.
This is a really great version, it's just a shame the gig was a rush job and the sound isn't great, great sax solo and that little piano run at 8:18 is the icing on the cake, missing from the later version.
Thanks for this wonderfull good Q upload, I fell in love with this live version when I firt heard it at the Mandela concert and my VHS tape is destroyd in the mean time;-) But this peace of music has not lost it,smagic to me,thx for you tuve an +DogSwede for the Q upload (again);-)
@lslh88 With the amount of feeling Knopfler and the others put into this song, it isn't surprising it has that effect...If you look right around the time Knopfler is singing that line, you can see he too has tears in his eyes.
