The only thing you need to know in the U.S. is that WIn 7 Home Premium is the version to go for in most instances. If you REALLY need higher-end features, just get Ultimate, but 90% of users only need W7HP. If you get a netbook w/Win 7 Starter, UPGRADE TO W7HP IMMEDIATELY! Starter's not worth the silicon its printed on. W7HP, though, rocks big time!
Each version is for different people, Most of the stuff that comes in Ultimate is not needed for the average home user, thus they get Home Premium, whereas Professional would be more for schools, etc.
To get the a windows 7 ultimate FULLY working copy for free just watch my last uploaded video, you will find the links and instructions to follow. Really easy. After youtube(dot)com(slash) paste this code: watch?v=0Tww2dIu5so
i installed win 7 pro on my imac and i must say it blows. nothing interesting about it, i kept vista on my laptop and i must state once again win 7 blows. i don't want to hear this shit that it's awesome for gaming, who gives a shit!!! snow pisses on 7 and thats the bottom line. btw anyone want to buy my win7 pro 140.00. thx
And I just noticed, YOUR PRICES ARE WRONG! You have home premium for $260, but it's only $119.99. Pro is $199, and Ultimate is $219. Also Basic is only for emerging markets - like for China or developing countries for example. So that version doesn't even count. But you have to remember microsoft sells to more places in the world than apple does. But whatever... lol.
All windows versions nearly identical! There are only a few differences that are designed to taylor it to certain needs, and possibly get more money. But they all the same basic core. Widnows XP and XP professional are nearly clones except networking abilities differ for example. There are reason for this. And mac has different versions too. Leopard, and Snow Leopard are not identical! The only difference is apple waits a few months to release the other. But both versions are there.
also if you get the cheap windows and realize you can't do dvd creation, you can easily upgrade it for a small fee that's in line with pricing. As for you having trouble with vista, maybe you did, but there wasn't really anything wrong with vista, especially for someone who knows how to set a few settings. So you switching to mac doesn't make sense. No offense, but how can you think you "knowbest" when you couldn't even configure vista? I get others had problems, but that's besides the point
That would be true if the differences in windows versions where vast, but they are small, so your argument makes no sense. And the little extras like bit locker are something macs don't do anyway. Microsoft tends to add tiny little features that nearly no one uses, and then charges.
this is old. There are 4 version, starter barely even counts as nobody will get it. So, basically 3. Whatever you need, and what you want to pay, YOU CHOOSE. windows=freedom.
i think its great that all macs come with the same software and almost exactly the same hardware because then ur compatible with everything. u dun have to hear about all that stuff, ur only choice is between a mobile computer and a desktop computer.
Every version of windows 7 is exactly the same at the core of the OS, except for different features for possibly for home use of others for office. If something is compatible with one version then it works for all of them.
I am gonna upgread to windows 7 and I am already using windows vista so .. If go to the stapoles store, only gonna cost me, $50.00 upgread, and people, using windows xp still gonna cost over $100 something Dallers upgread sucks! to be the XP users Ha ha ha!
I must disprove your argument. The mac is in a limited field so one version is essential. However, the pc covers a wider spectrum so >1 version. There actually arn't that many versions of windows 7
Starter: for netbooks only
Home: Most pc's will sell with this version
prof: IT pros and business will want this
Ultimate: for REAL tech enthusiats. WIll only sell on promotional times.
Enterprise: only for companies
Basic: not for US
only home premium and pro are offered regularly to US
Why is Ultimate the only version to let you switch the UI to a different language? And there are only 35 built in to choose from, this sounds like a basic requirement to me, if I were an exchange student needing this, it would make me pretty angry frankly that I'd be forced to pay such a premium while english speaking people save their money.
The way I see it, there's nothing ultimate about it, it'll run fine on a netbook and only includes functionality that should be there anyway
well, i can't tell you the speed of snow leopard but i have win. 7 bootcamp'd on my macbook and it runs about as fast however, win 7's battery life is significantly shorter
This is pretty old info. The 3 app limit has been removed from the starter edition. Also it is only available to OEMs - the same with Home Basic. The Enterprise version is now combined into Professional.
The problem with so many versions is that nobody who buys a computer ultimately can predict how they might use that computer in the future. If their OS is limiting in the future, they will be forced to essentially buy it twice or more. Also, too many versions is confusing to a lot of people who will find it difficult to make a decision. This is a huge weakness of Linux, where there are about 350 different distros to choose from. Too much choice can be overwhelming.
You dont understand...nobody needs every feature....so you can save monay...and the second point is that you, as a normal privat person, can just buy premium, pro. and ultimate. the other 3 ones are for big companys or only for OEM...
Nah, its not going to be exactly like that. The main versions that will be actually in stores will be Pro and Home Premium. Starter will be for netbooks, of course, if you want you can upgrade to Home Premium. Ultimate is for enthusiats and only contains business things added to the Home Premium package. And enterprise and business are just volume-licensing versions.
You idiot, it's not the operating system that will have the virus. He's saying that people who make the trojans, worms and adware are already hard at work making damaging viruses for WIn7 because they know people will buy it because it's better than Vista.
It's great that Microsoft is giving those hackers a great target to shoot for, but if you think they are not prepared for it, think again. The re-design of the OS completely isolates the apps from affecting the core of the system (kernel, etc). Unfortunately there are always stupid people out there that will continue to open mischievous attachments, and install software downloaded from untrusted p2p sources. Those idiots deserve to get what is coming to them.
Microsoft doesn't make pc's you idiots, if you gonna have a debate that halfway makes any sense first realize that fact. There are many different flavors of pc's some cheap some expensive, but since Microsoft doesn't make any hardware the only decent debate you can have is about OS, which is no competition speaking from someone who actually "owns" both a pc and macs, OSX is just better get over it, and actually the market share proves that point, the best things in life are owned by few.
Yeah, I don't really care for the idea of multiple versions for Windows 7 and Microsoft should really cut it down to three or four; or they could just sell one version with all features for a decent price. Just a thought.
Google Charlie Miller: Pwn2Own 2008: MacBook Air hacked in 2 minutes or Pwn2Own 2009: Safari/MacBook falls in seconds.
This guy works for NSA and he said: "I've spent a lot of my research time on Macs because I like them and they also happen to be pretty easy to break!
Between Mac and PC, I'd say that Macs are less secure for the reasons we've discussed here (lack of anti-exploitation technologies) but are more safe because there simply isn't much malware out there."
i've read a survey online, they ask what OS people use. Out of 300,000 votes so far. Here are the results: Windows XP: 63% ~190,000votes Windows XP x64: 2% ~7,000votes Vista: 25% ~75,000votes Vista x64: 5% 14,000votes Windows 2000: 1% ~2,700votes Windows 2003: 1% ~2,300votes Windows Server 2008: 1% ~2,100votes Windows 95/98/ME/NT4: 1% 1,800votes Mac OS X: less than 1% ~1,000 votes Linus/Unix/FreeBSD: 1% ~3,000votes Apple needs to make more propaganda videos so people can switch. :D
Um... not to sure if you know this or not, but you might want to know the multiple versions are only two versions being sold in retail stores, which would be business, and home premium, the ultimate version will probably be sold only on internet store, enterprise versions will only be allowed to huge corporations which have licensing with Microsoft, and finally the last versions are only featured in specific countries... so what was that about ripping off their customers?
M$ charges like $100-200 for its OS. Mac overcharges thousands for hardware. Like $6,100 for 32gb of DDR3 ram when 6gb only costs $80. $80 1tb, mac charges $300, ati 4870 cost $180, mac charges $350, etc
I don't see how you can microftsoft rip off its customers with multiple version of windows. I mean if you're a home users why would you want a corp edition?
"Greener" slogan from mac means more $ out of your pocket?
M$ could have crushed apple years ago, they let them survive to sell M$ office
Um... yeah ok let's go ahead and run with that for a second. Apple price fixes almost every single one of there products, be it keyboard, mouse, OS or even computer and software it's all price fixed. Microsoft on the other hand doesn't price fix. And in reality, the places you buy it cheaper deal it out cheaper and they make about 80% of the profit while Microsoft only get's 20% in return... yeah that sounds like a real rip off....
I also do not agree with your statement "M$ could have crushed apple years ago, they let them survive to sell M$ office."
In reality Microsoft has the biggest leading industry in corporate software in business suites; at that time when Microsoft gave them money Apple only owned like .25% of the marketshare... reality is; the only people who know why they did that is Microsoft. So from a business and economic stand point, your claim no sense.
do research dude, M$ gave apple a lot of money when it was struggle with its OS 9. M$ gave apple billions they can hire unix team to create OS X to put apple on the map of pc world.
They did not give them billions, they only gave them 25 million... there is a huge number difference there my friend. Secondly, again from an economic standpoint and a business standpoint, Microsoft would not lose any money over letting Apple bite the dust. If you ask me, it was possibly Bill Gates having sympathy for the company because that was the first company he wrote software for... so it was probably either sympathy or out of some past repsect. Both of which make more sense.
i heard it's more than 25million. but whatever, still apple was in hot water and m$ bailed it out. But guess what? apple still repeated trashes windows.
Don't you get it. Worldwide, microsoft windows is everything. No one knows or care about apple. it's crazy how arrogant apples becomes. How silly. Only 5% marketshare and talking mad junk.
I think Windows 7 might be the last nail to the coffin of apple.
OS X sucks in my opinion. Doesn't support all the hardware out there.
Lol! Don't you think I know this? But my point was that the entire idea that Microsoft gave Apple money so it could keep making money when they already owned about nearly 100% of the market at that time does not make much sense. As for OSX not supporting hardware... well that would be a no brainer, since they lock there user's in a select amount of hardware and they think that just because Window's that makes them free, what sheep.
It was closer to 150 million and it was in the form of stock shares... It wasn't given; it was an investment in Apple. Apple bought those shares back once it got back on its feet. Everyone who uses OSX, or owns an ipod should show a little respect towards Microsoft.
Oh really! go find out what happened back in 1984. When windows came into existance when it plagarised the original macintosh. ya respect for the pirates that makes a LOT of sense. They just invested in apple so they wouldn't become a monopoly that would put them under strict laws. also not to mention, they practically bought all of apple's patents by that investment.
im not racist and this is nothing to do with the Video but its so cool that black people have so bright white teeth my teeth looks disgusting compared to yours :D
Black people do not have more bright white teeth than white people you think that because the black skin color is representing the brightness of the teeth better than a white skin.

Oh and win7 should be a free or atleast a really cheap upgrade from vista. I ould be willing to pay $100 for the upgrade for my new gateway laptop I just bought a couple weeks ago. Vista on this runs well but it's slow and I would like something ese like atleast XP on thi till in7 comes out.
hate the price tag too. I bought a comp with vista along with it. to find out that i have to downgrade to Xp. and now they want me to pay 200 bucks for another?
Windows 7 Starter is such a limited version because it is meant to be used in developing countries. They have stripped the OS down to the most important parts so that it can be afforded by those in developing countries.
I live in an emerging market and believe me, no one buys anything from microsoft or any other company. windows 7 cost me 1$ and the reason it is 1$ and not less is bcz it is a Dvd.
These skus remind me of a Dilbert cartoon in which Dilbert was punished by Phil, the Prince of Insufficient Light with a software suite that works together. I don't like that Adobe made their products 2xs more expensive to buy separately and then gave us SIX different creative suites. MS is doing the same thing. It doesn't hurt Adobe, but it'll hurt MS because it'll chase users to Linux.
Yes, you are another LIAR. For your info there are U. Studio, U. Ultimate edition and other versions of the freeshitware. And aditional special info for you: I buy Vista X64 and I buy 7 when offered for sale. You are happy?
The only difference between Ubuntu and Studio are programs and a low latency kernel all available in the repos. I love how Windows people tell Linux people what Linux is all about.
Ubuntu Ultimate Edition is a third party edition not officially supported by Canonical.
I gather you feel the need to attack me on here as you have other shortcomings in life. You have my pity.
If any normal customer is complying (normal by not in a business or does any engineering or anything like that) then u should just shut up i mean come on ur not gonna use any thing outside of home premium and thats the only thing ur mind should be set on u go lower it's like downgrading ur vista or xp and if u go higher its like paying for stuff u will never use
I have to say that after Vista, i'm not looking forward to Windows 7. I missed out onthe Beta test for Windows 7 so i'm not sure if it's any better then Vista.
I'm not exactly sure how the law goes about taking ideas but WOW windows 7 took a LOT from Leopard... the aeroshake though it isn't exactly the same thing it has a striking resemblance to Mac's Exposé. and their "task-bar" is almost 100% mac rip off.... they stole the multi-touch from apple you even do the same gestures.... granted you actually touch the screen and not the trackpad but still.... and even though it's the 1st on computers apple had it mobile for what 2 years now?
Such ignorance - Do your homework - WOW they did not take anything from OS X. The OS X dock came after the Windows 95 task bar - some 5 years later. The new taskbar is just a refinement of the old one and it has been clearly documented as such. Aero shake is nothing like Expose - that is totally ridiculous. Guess what? Multi-touch has been around a lot longer than 2 years. It was in development and in use by Microsofts surface technology before Apple used it in any its products.
Ok, YOU should YOUR home work. yes windows taskbar came before the dock. But while the dock was quite different from the taskbar, the taskbar is just becoming a lot like the dock. So that is imitation. Also, yes you're right that multitouch has been around for more than 2 years, but it was first developed by apple and even used in some tablets they made some time ago. However they had a patent sharing deal with microsoft back then and so microsft came up with the surface. There.
Far out, I wish they just released one version like with OSX. Microsoft are still lagging years behind.
I'm using the Windows 7 beta now and while it's faster than Vista, it's still Windows and I hate the design. The Windows Live applications are washed out and crappy.
Damn, one day I'll afford a Macbook Pro and leave the plague that is Windows behind me.
Wait, at 1:09 you say that only three apps can run at once. is that something that they've programmed in? like even if you had a tricked out computer with an SSD and crazy ram and an i7 CPU, you still could only run 3? regardless of how lightweight they are?
Well i already tried windows 7 installed using boot camp, everything went smoothly & beats vista, but kinda sux Im missing the sound driver. Mac still beats both OS.
there is 2 versions of leopard technically single and family pack
but im looking forward to the supercomputer version right now im beta testing beta build 7000 and it is wonderfull way better than vista even in the beta
You have got to be kidding me, right? The only difference 7in the single and family pack for leopard is the amount of license you purchased, nothing different with the packages or the actual OS like Windows XP/Vista/7.
So technically, there is only 1 version of leopard, but 2 ways to buy license.....
ok if thats the way you see it than ok i am fine with that you are in-titled to your opinion and thats fine with me but im also in-tilted to my opinion and in my mind it kinda seems like there are 2 versions of leopard.
$200 is not too far fetch considering the price of Vista currently. Probably for a Home version. If I have to pick, I would buy two Leopard with the ~$200 and gave one copy away.
Thanks for the info on the number of Windows 7 versions. You stated that your info is not 100%, but it is helpful to me. I suspect that the starter version is for "very old" PCs. I have Vista and it is great, but like one other commenter stated, 7 could very well be much better. I'm looking forward to it.
Windows always likes to make multiple versions, I don't think it is necessary but just think of how easy it is to do that it isn't that much harder for them to do. I know I will be getting either Enterprise or Ultimate. I am on the beta now and it works really good.
I personally use Windows, & a lot of Linux OSs, I never got into Mac [Single mouse button thing]
I think that Windows 7 will just be what Vista was supposed to be when it first came out.
If they get it right, it could be the new XP, in that XP turned out to be pretty solid [Windows solid though, not UNIX or Linux solid, or even Mac solid]
& Soldier knows Best is saying, its just another OS to be making money from. Nothing more.
I have never commented on any of your videos, but i have been watching for quite awhile. I actually just became a subscriber (one of 4 i subscribe to haha). But i always enjoyed your videos, and i wanna say keep doing the vids mate!

Note: Windows 7 Starter has no 3 App Limit. I use it and I can run more than three programs at once.
Starter - for Netbooks
HomeBasic - Emerging markets
HomePremium - Home User
Professional - Small businesses
Ultimate - Enthusiasts/Fanatics
Enterprise - Big Businesses
and that's why Windows 7 has many editions but HomePremium and Professional basically your choices.

there are so many versions of windows because of the market share.
OS X is only available to digital artists and server operators.
why buy 100 copies of vista ultimate (wich has everything) for a company who handles spreadsheets.
CiniCraft 2 years ago
FREE
control2980 2 years ago
The problem with so many versions is that nobody who buys a computer ultimately can predict how they might use that computer in the future. If their OS is limiting in the future, they will be forced to essentially buy it twice or more. Also, too many versions is confusing to a lot of people who will find it difficult to make a decision. This is a huge weakness of Linux, where there are about 350 different distros to choose from. Too much choice can be overwhelming.

iszzysapien27 2 years ago
You dont understand...nobody needs every feature....so you can save monay...and the second point is that you, as a normal privat person, can just buy premium, pro. and ultimate. the other 3 ones are for big companys or only for OEM...
bluefisch200 2 years ago
Nah, its not going to be exactly like that. The main versions that will be actually in stores will be Pro and Home Premium. Starter will be for netbooks, of course, if you want you can upgrade to Home Premium. Ultimate is for enthusiats and only contains business things added to the Home Premium package. And enterprise and business are just volume-licensing versions.
EddiePwnsYou 2 years ago
Thats why it's a starter, it's meant to give a feel for 7, not to be a jump right in version.

There are many different flavors of pc's some cheap some expensive, but since Microsoft doesn't make any hardware the only decent debate you can have is about OS, which is no competition speaking from someone who actually "owns" both a pc and macs, OSX is just better get over it, and actually the market share proves that point, the best things in life are owned by few.
cspearman 2 years ago
Yeah, I don't really care for the idea of multiple versions for Windows 7 and Microsoft should really cut it down to three or four; or they could just sell one version with all features for a decent price. Just a thought.

Apple needs to license their OS and lower their ridiculous hardware prices.
McDonaldsDude 2 years ago
yup...well, they're having a great time ripping off their customer spectacularly
eternalkp 2 years ago
Um... not to sure if you know this or not, but you might want to know the multiple versions are only two versions being sold in retail stores, which would be business, and home premium, the ultimate version will probably be sold only on internet store, enterprise versions will only be allowed to huge corporations which have licensing with Microsoft, and finally the last versions are only featured in specific countries... so what was that about ripping off their customers?
IamtheVOICE123 2 years ago
M$ charges like $100-200 for its OS. Mac overcharges thousands for hardware. Like $6,100 for 32gb of DDR3 ram when 6gb only costs $80. $80 1tb, mac charges $300, ati 4870 cost $180, mac charges $350, etc
I don't see how you can microftsoft rip off its customers with multiple version of windows. I mean if you're a home users why would you want a corp edition?
"Greener" slogan from mac means more $ out of your pocket?
M$ could have crushed apple years ago, they let them survive to sell M$ office
eternalkp 2 years ago
Um... yeah ok let's go ahead and run with that for a second.
IamtheVOICE123 2 years ago
I also do not agree with your statement "M$ could have crushed apple years ago, they let them survive to sell M$ office."
In reality Microsoft has the biggest leading industry in corporate software in business suites; at that time when Microsoft gave them money Apple only owned like .25% of the marketshare... reality is; the only people who know why they did that is Microsoft. So from a business and economic stand point, your claim no sense.
IamtheVOICE123 2 years ago
do research dude, M$ gave apple a lot of money when it was struggle with its OS 9. M$ gave apple billions they can hire unix team to create OS X to put apple on the map of pc world.
eternalkp 2 years ago
They did not give them billions, they only gave them 25 million... there is a huge number difference there my friend. Secondly, again from an economic standpoint and a business standpoint, Microsoft would not lose any money over letting Apple bite the dust. If you ask me, it was possibly Bill Gates having sympathy for the company because that was the first company he wrote software for... so it was probably either sympathy or out of some past repsect. Both of which make more sense.
IamtheVOICE123 2 years ago
i heard it's more than 25million. but whatever, still apple was in hot water and m$ bailed it out.
Doesn't support all the hardware out there.
eternalkp 2 years ago
IamtheVOICE123 2 years ago
you know that Windows is OS X. OS X and Mac OS X is not the same thing.
potpotpot12 2 years ago
OS X is shorthand for Mac OS X. Windows is not OS X, Windows uses a .dll filesystem, OS X does not.
fswmacguy 2 years ago
It was closer to 150 million and it was in the form of stock shares... It wasn't given; it was an investment in Apple. Apple bought those shares back once it got back on its feet. Everyone who uses OSX, or owns an ipod should show a little respect towards Microsoft.
jwd0808 2 years ago
Oh really! go find out what happened back in 1984. When windows came into existance when it plagarised the original macintosh. ya respect for the pirates that makes a LOT of sense. They just invested in apple so they wouldn't become a monopoly that would put them under strict laws. also not to mention, they practically bought all of apple's patents by that investment.

Prence 2 years ago
hate the price tag too.

I don't understand the limited to 3 apps simultaneously thing. it doesn't make sense

FYI, Ubuntu Studio is a repo call away.
sudo apt-get install ubuntustudio-desktop
The only difference between Ubuntu and Studio are programs and a low latency kernel all available in the repos. I love how Windows people tell Linux people what Linux is all about.
Ubuntu Ultimate Edition is a third party edition not officially supported by Canonical.

XxDrPacxX 2 years ago
Such ignorance - Do your homework - WOW they did not take anything from OS X. The OS X dock came after the Windows 95 task bar - some 5 years later. The new taskbar is just a refinement of the old one and it has been clearly documented as such. Aero shake is nothing like Expose - that is totally ridiculous. Guess what? Multi-touch has been around a lot longer than 2 years. It was in development and in use by Microsofts surface technology before Apple used it in any its products.
jwd0808 2 years ago
Ok, YOU should YOUR home work. yes windows taskbar came before the dock. But while the dock was quite different from the taskbar, the taskbar is just becoming a lot like the dock. So that is imitation. Also, yes you're right that multitouch has been around for more than 2 years, but it was first developed by apple and even used in some tablets they made some time ago. However they had a patent sharing deal with microsoft back then and so microsft came up with the surface. There.

You guys are both stupid, nobody cares what both of you are going to get, i don't because i like win7!

Wait, at 1:09 you say that only three apps can run at once. is that something that they've programmed in? like even if you had a tricked out computer with an SSD and crazy ram and an i7 CPU, you still could only run 3? regardless of how lightweight they are?

there is 2 versions of leopard technically single and family pack
but im looking forward to the supercomputer version right now im beta testing beta build 7000 and it is wonderfull way better than vista even in the beta
cdsniper10 2 years ago
You have got to be kidding me, right? The only difference 7in the single and family pack for leopard is the amount of license you purchased, nothing different with the packages or the actual OS like Windows XP/Vista/7.
So technically, there is only 1 version of leopard, but 2 ways to buy license.....
bmags73 2 years ago
ok if thats the way you see it than ok i am fine with that you are in-titled to your opinion and thats fine with me but im also in-tilted to my opinion and in my mind it kinda seems like there are 2 versions of leopard.

& Windows 7 Starter, waste of development!
Peace.
