This was by far my most memorable moment in gaming history. Nothing this epic had ever been done in a game before and I can't think of too many who have managed to pull it off since.
There was actually a game not released in America due religious references called Shin Megumi Tensei that, amongst lost of other stuff, had a nuclear holocaust in first 20 minutes, that came before this game. Not the same sort of apocalypse, and arguably not even the biggest shock that occurred in the game's opening.
This is the first time I pissed my pants for a game villain... Omg this guy destroyed the world and became the god of magic... I wonder why are they saying that Sephiroth is more powerfull...
Kefka is the best villain in the entire Final Fantasy Series. His insanity and unexpected randomness made him into an epic character. It makes me wonder what he was like before he submitted to the magic infusion experiments. Also seeing the World of Balance ripped asunder was pretty dramatic and shocking as a kid.
Kefka is the only Final Fantasy Villian to see the victory he longs for realized. Kefka won, the heroes lost, all though the loss is temporary, Kefka, for a brief time, was victorious.
This is why whenever people say that Aerith's death was the most tragic thing ever or that Sephiroth is the coolest villain ever conceived, I can only shake my head. This and Celes' suicide leap really got to me. There is just no comparison.
Nomura said that final fantasy 13 versus is going to be the darkest final fantasy yet....probably putting too much in it but does that mean that they're gonna top the events in final fantasy 6 and 7 especially this bit? or just a stupid marketing ploy like 13.
My brother and I play this game and we were amazed when Kefka take the role as the main villain from been a pathetic weak coward who run at the first sign of trouble He betray his master and gain absolute power we were shocked with this scene
Until now I think this is the most epic moment in video game history
Something like this is gonna happen to World of Warcraft in the Cataclysm expansion pack. I imagined that this game was where Blizzard got the inspiration for that the minute I heard news that Deathwing almost destroys Azeroth in Cataclysm lol...
This has to be one of the more shocking moments in a video game. I mean, they actually destroy the world. This scene blew my mind the first time I saw it.
Haha, when I saw this scene the first time I just sat and watched it and was like "wtf is going on here? hey...", then it took some time before I fully realized what had happened. :P
This has got to be one of the most epic events in any RPG. In what seems to be an instant, the entire plot, no the entire WORLD of the game changes so completely that it almost seems like you're starting a different game. A completely "new" world, reduced to a single character and weak enemies all about, the main teams' allies (returners) and enemies (empire) are all gone except for one, Kefka. It's no longer about liberating the world from an empire.
@FirestormChameleon Just hearing that music after all these years... I mean its been like 10-20 years since I've heard that music and instantly it took me back to that moment when the world was destroyed.
@FirestormChameleon It's the first time in the Final Fantasy series where the antagonist actually suceeds in his personal plans.
That's one of the reasons - the best one - that explains why Kefka has many fans and is considered one of the best villains of the series, alongisde Sephiroth.
This needs to be remade on ps3 and 360, as long as se updates worldmap (kick that out and you wont see the impact kefka made to the planet, sin ruining stuff and running in a straight line really hurt ffx, i wanted to see what it did to the entire planet).
Forget Aerith's death. THIS was a shocker. For one, I didn't expect Kefka's rise to power, let alone killing his own master (who seemed to be the main villain because of his shadowy status) and then for him to become a god and RIP APART THE WORLD? And then that quote at the end just cements the whole shocking atmosphere...
This moment also got to me the first time I saw it, because I was in total shock that our heroes did not save the world (at this point, anyway). Even though I knew there was a World of Ruin thanks to the map that came with the game, I thought it was like Final Fantasy II where it was something you could travel to, and I somehow missed it.
Yeah you got a world of ruin map with the world of balance map and you're wondering how the world of ruin map comes about. Not to mention rented SNES saves where you're immediately at the final battle and you're wondering how the hell that came about.
@peanut3423 Did you forget the Weapons treath? The way Shinra blame the heroes because the ending of the world? You also see the world upside of the events AFTER Aerith was epic and seeing the heroes fighting without a less chance of victory.
@peanut3423 The only problem is, he doesn't really destroy something, just rip apart the world (as you said). Just one city was really destroyed in the entire game (Vector, I believe). But as the name of the "new world" implies (World of Ruin), he brought ruin to the world and destroyed its former balance.
I can, but I choose not to. This game was published as Final Fantasy III in the US for the NES and plenty of people still think of it as such. If I put Final Fantasy VI, someone might think I mean the PSX or GBA versions.
Kefka destroyed the planet but kept some of it because he liked torturing people, but like every villain (exc majora) he still didn't kill the real threat, you, but he did a bloody good job at crushing you regardless.
One of the most disturbing events in gaming history. When I watched this the first time, I felt like screaming: "It's the end of the world! Hang on, everyone!"
Such an "edge-of-your-seat" event huh? Truly one of the mose suspenseful moments of the game! I also love how it looks like Relm just kinda ran off the Blackjack while everyone else fell dramatically.
is this the part when you can decide whether to wait for that ninja dude or not? i decided not to wait, and it made the ending sequence hang up when the ninja dude was to be shown. imagine that !!!
i finished the game on emulator years later then. ..
This part is actually kind of disturbing. Especially when the Earth splits, the guy falls in between, and BAM. It smashes together right on him. *shudder*
I agree, XtremeWeirdo. This game proves that, in order to make a game with an excellent battle system, a good degree of character customization, an inmense and good story, many characters, each one with a nice background, the most important is not the technology, but the creativity and the heart that is invested upon the game.
if you wanted to find Locke, you had to fly over a mountain range that looks like a star, land in the little hole in the middle and youll be in a cave, from there go through it and youll eventually find Locke
this scene will be so epic in the remake!

Kefka is a good vilan =D
But...
Kefka: He destroy the world
Sephiroth: He destroy the Solar System
Sin: He destroying parts of world at 1000 years and if these parts are arranged not take long time to Sin destroy this parts again.
So... Kefka is not the best vilan!
Ps: I'am Kefka fan, Sephiroth Fan, Jetch Fan, Cloud Of Darkness fan ^^
