NOT trying to crtisize but.Adivice trying slowing him down before you ask for the canter cause if he does it to much from really fast trot then he will get in the habit of doing that it looks a little sloppy.I know you are just starting to train him to canter but you wanna make sure you try to do that cause it can make your horse get really out of control. It happened with my standerdbred and i had to retrain her to canter cause she would rush into it and get out of control.Just some advice...
Well done,,,I own a 4 year old(trotter) who i bought before she was backed to the harness and is a brilliant riding horse but i have the problem that when i ask for a trot she starts skipping trying to canter instead of doing to her a `boring` trot haha
I have a rocky mountain horse who racks and he is awful to canter lol. I haven't much experience with gaited horses, he is my first, but I have really enjoyed working with and training him. I wish he had a smoother canter though I'm hoping it will smooth out with more practice. It feels like every leg does something different! Are standardbreds comfortable to ride when they pace?
Good work getting a canter. If I were you, I'd put more work in his pace first; either train him to gait at a decent 4-beat, or train him to trot, or both (mine will do walk, flatwalk, saddle rack, rack, trot, canter and gallop, when I ask for them) . I'd avoid pace if I were you, and try to get a canter without rushing into it. But good work anyhow, just some advice along the road. :)
At 1:40 was it me or was he on the wrong lead?? I am not trying to be mean in anyway just wondering if i am right. I know how hard it is to get them to canter! You did reallllllllly well!
Hey I have a question....... My 16 year old standie mare paces sometimes. Um my question is sometimes my mare trots normally and others she paces so fast its like WOW usually the second i see she shoots her head up and paces I turn her around go back and start again, it seems to work... But how can i get my horse to go from that trot to a canter cause usually when i cluck or squeeze with my calf she paces how can i get her to canter? Not pace? Thanks
@HorseRidingQueen hey there, I have an 8 yr old standie, I've noticed that when Cola breaks into a pace its either because hes A. Nervous or B. off balance. Now in your case Id say she'd be nervous because standies are taught NEVER to canter during their racing years. Have you tried ground work cantering first? =} Try that and see how it goes! Goodluck!
@ForColabola Thanks! Um... As for ground work you mean like lunging? I have a new lunge line i got for xmas and i have tried it one but every time i lunge her i can barely get her to trot. But the good thing is is when she trot on the lunge line is like awesome and not to fast and she doesnt pace. I guess i should get a lunge whip to keep her moving?( i would never everrrrrr touch her with it) Thanks!
@HorseRidingQueen exactly, lunging! In your case yes a lunge whip could help but also does your horse know voice commands? It could be as simple as she doesnt know how to lunge lol. when you trot her do you cluck? If so clucking at her could get her to move forward or use the end of the lunge rope and just flick towards her hindend (not hitting her obviously lol). With my horse he usually reads my body language but he knows voice commands when he is lazy lol. Hope this helps, best of luck!
@ForColabola Thanks! I am getting a lunging whip soon, and will try it after all the snow melts! Thanks Yeah my mare knows a few commands, like whoa, walk on, and trot but for some reason she just gets in a lazy mode when i lunge her, and i tried a rope and thats not working too well because she knows i wont do anything to her with the rope she is like okay so a rope is chasing me lol. I hope it works thank you so much for the help! I am sure she will more with a little crack of the whip lol.
Good job! But I don't suggest doing jumps until he's 6. Their bones aren't fully grown yet so if they jump they could break their bones and probably have to get put down. (That's if you were doing jumps) But great job for the cantering :) I love standardbreds, I would have to say there the best breed.
OMG I LOVE IT. Canter, pace, half canter, pace. My standardbred raced for 9 years and we are having the most trouble getting him to canter. It looks much like the half canter/pace.
u sould try and discourage the pacing oen way buy playing with the reins make it uncomfortable for him then wen he bounces into the trot start rising give him his reins sos i just am a standie trainer and i cnt help but help others ahah
My horse is a Standardbred and he 'canters' the same as yours. If you look the front legs are at a canter and the back legs are at a trot. So its a four beat canter (well half trot/canter).
ohh wow you can really tell he's been in a sulky by the way he moves aye... he's got such straightness when he turns... I had trouble with my boy at first with that. Gooood job!! we need a bigger area for him to properly canter... his strides are SOOOO big but sooo nice... rocking horse type =D
I have a 9 year old standie, and have been riding her for almost a year and she loves to lope ! she impressed me when i first got her she was always on the correct lead just in a field. i haven't been riding long ( just over a year with lessons and casual rides ) but she picks up from a walk to a lope really well !
how did you teach him? my standardbred beauty was canterng at this old agistment place but now since we have moved he only canters a bit! do you know how i can train him to canter?
good job, but i'd say be careful on the speed your trotting at before hand. you need a steady, even trot. one which is too fast may mean the horse can't set off properly
good job! that's the best canter i've ever seen out of a standardbred .. we had one at my old barn who 'cantered' but it was a four beat canter .. more of a slow gallop really, and she's been a riding horse for the last eight years. she has even gone to a few jumper shows!
I have a New Zeland Standerbred.. He will canter on line just not with the rider.. . but he has injuries from racing. your standie is very prettyy i have a video of my hourse ready trying to canter w my freind.. that was 2 summers ago... Now hes troting doing leg passes... :D its harder to teach standie but once they have it they know it..
aww how sweet! i love standardbreds! i have onecalled Willy kinda like yours but he has a small white spot on his fore-head lol hes 6, and im teaching him to canter.. i was reading your comments and i will definetly try it tomorrow =]
i have an 8 yr old stb gelding he is at the stage where he is just learning to canter but the only thing that is the hardest thing for him is turning, any ideas how to help him into turning with out falling off balance
OMG, I'll put it out there: you're my hero. We've got a school horse who's off the track and he will NOT canter. He knows the signals, but he won't. He just trots very fast... even when he's loose.
Thanks. Thats a tough one. Sometimes they are harder then others to break! i had a very hard time with my boy at first, but then he just soared! good Luck
when u stand in the stirrups it hurts there back because ur putting all ur weight in the stirrups and its pushing the saddle down my friends horse got arthritis from her doing that
horsey683...she is off the seat all the way through thats how. I think her stirrups are too short; if they were longer she would be more deep in the saddle. I do like the canter on the horse tho, very smooth and not too rocking horse type.
the reason you stay out of the saddle when teaching them to canter is so your not putting all that weight on their back. They have a harder time cantering if you sit in the saddle. Until they get really good, i dont suggest it. Thats what i found helped me!
How do you stay sitting straight at that really fast trot? I have a STB that I'm training to canter, and when she does that super fast trot, i always end up bouncing out of the saddle or leaning forward to stay on. It doesn't help that she rears when I ask for a canter either! I think she just rears because she doesn't know what to do after trotting so fast. Have any tips???
shorten your stirrups and sit out of the saddle. Like i did in my video, this stops you from punding on her back(im sure its not very comfortable for her)This also helps you keep your balance!
I taught my Standerbred to canter, but ever once in a while, when he gets confused or something...,he paces lol,but only for a few strids lol...he doesn't do it alot so its not a proublem & he more does it on the lounge line...lol nice canter
I just bought a 12 yr old Standardbred yesterday. They retired him because he wasn't fast enough and they felt no need to keep him. How long should I wait until I start training him? Does anyone have any advice on how to train him also?
this might be a tough one because he has been pacing for so long. You can start as soon as you both have trust for each other. The horse has to trust you when your teaching him somehting new or he will never learn anything and you will just get frusturated! good luck

lol ok, congrats on teaching your horse thats its right to canter, very good job. Im about to start retraining my standardbred 12yr old to canter and trot and all under saddle.
P.S. why do ppl get so intent on criticizing ppl, chill
We have thoroughbreds on our farm and they canter easy. I commend you for getting your horse to canter. That is a hard thing! We have neighbours who race Standardbreds and when they canter they get in trouble. Love to see you working to give a second career to your new friend. :)
I see that your boy is a pacer :-) My STB mare did the same thing when I would squeeze her into a canter. She'd canter (or HER version of it, lol) for a few hundred yards..then go into her little "shuffle" again. It was annoying, so I eventually would give up and just enjoy the smooth ride of her pace (which is pretty rare for the breed).
Yuu dnt reali TEACH a Standardbred tah canter. The canter is a natural pace for ANY horse, including the Standardbred. Therefore, you only show him that cantering is what you want from him.
ok first of all, i think someone forgot to TEACH you how to spell properly. second, i think i would know that it takes TEACHING considering i have a standardbred mare who didnt know what the hell a canter was until i TAUGHT her. k thanks
Ow cum thy cantr round the padock & always break in2 a cantr whn racin thn huh?! & ive owned an Sb too. Yuu dnt teach em tah cantr! 2 do tht yuud ave tah grb their legs 1 aftr nothr & brng em fwd n the ordr thy r meant tah go or sumthng!
i agree you dont have to teach them hoe to canter but you do have to teach them the aids for canter as when the race they get in trouble when evry they canter
Actually, alot of off the track standie's have to be taught how to canter. Racing Standardbreds were taught not to break stride, ever. The hobbles (i think that is what they are called) are there just as a sure way to make sure they can't break stride (if they're a pacer), and if by some chance they tried to canter, the hobbles would make it impoossble to canter. Without the hobbles, if they ever broke out into a canter, they were immediately pulled back, telling them not canter.
You are right, they're called hopples. However, they are only there to help encourage them to stay on gait by balancing them...it doesn't make it impossible for them to break stride.
