  • Also, if anyone is wondering, the graphics looked a bit washed out so they can be easy to see on the original GBA. (which does NOT have a back-lit LCD screen)

  • @jka12002redux

All I know is, Altered Beast was (and still is) absolute garbage on the Genesis. That's probably why Sega later decided to bundle the system with Sonic The Hedgehog instead.

  • I got Sega Arcade Gallery on my Game Boy.

  • The one problem I have with it is the timer and the dithering of the sprites. Other than that, the enemy fire rotates smoothly and without frame pauses, the graphics are clear and bright, and the music sounds almost identical to Arcade version

  • Not a bad port considering the hardware!

  • @BalancedSpirit79 The GBA is more powerful than the original arcade

  • @ojideagu Than why does it look and sound like shit compared to the arcade, go play the saturn version to see a real port.

  • @SagatsPetTiger Have you actually seen this on REAL hardware rather than a jerky pixellated video? Clearly you haven't.

  • looks like pc engine version or better close to arcade

  • Damn, now I have the urge to find and buy this game.

  • Hmm, if i ever see this and i have money i'll pick it up. It seems to be a good port considering the GBA's screen estate, and the audio's not bad.

  • My god, i used to play this on the atari when i was maybe 4 or 5. My brother would love to see this new version. Im gonna get a GBA emulator and set it up :)

  • master system??

have you played that version lately?

this is very good considering the machine - i think it could have been programmed better too as the movements of some enemies seems a bit naff.

the scaling for such a limited machine though is very impressive.

the saturn is still the most authentic version and the megadrive collection version on ps3 and 360 is the biggest off key let down.

  • good

  • I liked the Sega Master system version better :D

  • Ya gotta love the GBA's 8-bit NES sound chip and Commodore 64 graphics.

  • Spoken like I guy who's never played a GBA, C64 or NES.

  • No actually its more spoken from experience.

Anyone who's played the GBA could instinctively compare it to such consoles.

Its ill remarked qualities scream 'em.

  • Well I was hoping you were just trolling. Because likening this to the C64 and NES is insane, much as I loved those two systems.

  • Ya know what, I think was kinda trolling, I dunno why I've been such a jerk here but it is in my honest opinion that the GBA is pretty well consisting of those consoles.

It has an absolutely awful sound chip and the processor demounts to something of a portable console that could have easily been state of the art about 7-8 years before it came out.

I honestly wasn't out trying to flame anyone, that's just what I think.

You can sympathize with me, right?

I truthfully do wanna get those someday

  • ya see, my interests are SEGA, SEGA, and more SEGA, but I also like anything retro including videogames and pop culture related things from the 80's and late 70's.

There are a FEW new non SEGA games I'll play but very few.

Sorry about that, I hope I wasn't to much of a jerk, I just have trouble controlling these quality rants within me. ^_^

  • The GBA's native sound support isn't too impressive, but it's versatile enough to play samples well enough considering it's a portable. Not as strong as the SNES, but handles pcm samples well enough to sound much better than the NES.

You need to go play some Commodore 64 games. Memory makes the graphics a little prettier than they are. :(

The Commodore Amiga is closer to the GBA visually.

  • No I know.

I am aware that I was exaggerating, A BIT.

To me the GBA was honestly way behind, Nintendo had no portable competition so they well.....released the Game Boy Advanced.

And apparently they continue the same business method making far outdated hardware (DS) making just as much money as ever.

  • Yep. I never minded Nintendo's being behind in the portable market because their systems had good battery life.

But I had an Atari Lynx and that thing was friggin insane by comparison, so yeah, I see where you're coming from.

I personally like the DS a lot, and have always liked Nintendo's handhelds, but yeah, they're usually the weakest when there is any competition.

  • Truthfully I could care less of the 'realism' that any hardware or software is produced in the 'weakest' stand point to me it stands weakest in the overall quality of their products not necessarily in the realism of graphics that is produced in their games.

Say would you mind tellin' me a thing or two about the Lynx in a personal message?

I'd honestly like to know more about it.

    Thank you.

  • the arcade version is

    unbeatable

  • this is a port of the arcade version

  • That's interesting, a time limit. There was never a time limit on any Space Harrier games. At least, I don't think so.

  • Actually, the arcade version had a time limit.

  • and holy hell it sounds better too

    updated non fm instruments ftw

  • like to try the game i play the sms verison on my ds but this looks better

  • Man! I had this game for the GBA! It was soo fun!

  • ...actually.. you know what.. your damn right about it being better than maybe any other port. I've just had a glance at some of them.. this actually realising aint half bad compaired even to the Sega Game Gear or Master System..

  • They sound had just kept to the Arcade, 32X and Saturn - this was a terrible move!

  • how is this a terrible move?

  • well - music doesnt really seem the same..(close enough but doesn't hold the same old classic arcade feel) and gameplay is a tad on the slow side.. i've played all versions including this one and this is the worst i've been on... although I guess it's down to personal preference.. but i'd personally stick with the versions I said in the previous post I made.

    Cheers for the reply

  • in my opinion its better than any non 32x (or the saturn or arcade or shenmue[whichever it was])port

still looking at the atari version made me realize it's potential

  • hahahah.. the Atari version.. don't go there =P

  • well actually.. if your on about the Atari ST (or w/e it's called) I guess it does kinda keep up a fighting chance.. graphics look basic but nice.. shame about the shadows, music and the utter screaming pain that the Harrier Man faces... probs would put the player off ever wanting to do his job...

  • im talkin about the atari 2600

it did so good for hardware so horrible

  • That was the Atari 8-bit computer series actually.

  • in all fairness, this is an ok version. Close to arcade to a degree. Understandably, the arcade version used a lot of state of the art hardware for its time. Consequently, it took a long time before you had "close" ports/emulations and if I recall, it was Space Harrier for the 32x in 1994 where you started seeing the game in "true form". the c64 version from 1986 was a piece of shit. Don't bother with it!

  • i own a GbaSP and it's laim

  • Serial experiments laim.

  • laim

  • i own a gba sp and i hate it is laim

  • this is a good port i have to say though i have bloody well lost my sega classics cart :(

  • must say Space harrier C64 kicks ass ...better music and atmoshphere

  • i can understand your comment... if someone was doing drugs.

  • some examples of actual PORTS of Space Harrier

    *Sega 32X

    *Sega Saturn

    *Sega Dreamcast (Shenmue)

    *Xbox (Shenmue II)

  • it's not a port, but a decent conversion. I hope people's eyes don't roll with boredom but let me say this in as few words as possible: a port means means translating source code/algorithms from one platform to another.

  • In the case of GBA Space Harrier, this is no port. totally reprogrammed, reinterpreted for GBA hardware. the same goes for most arcade-to-home games that are mistakenly called ports. that word is overused because real ports of arcade games to home machines are much rarer than most people think.

  • some examples of conversions/translations or adaptions of Space Harrier: *Sega Master System *Famicom/NES *IBM PC DOS *Sharp X68000 *NEC P.C. Engine/TurboGrafx-16 *Amiga *Atari ST *Commodore 64 *GameGear *ZX Spectrum *Amstrad CPC *Fujitsu FM-77AV *NEC PC-88
  • space harrier more like ace harrier

  • wtf

  • LOL. exactly what I said.
