went to a catholic school when i was a kid and when we were learning about the burial of jesus it said they stripped off jesus's clothing, then some kid started humming this lol
A #1 hit for David Rose and His Orchestra in July 1962. On a personal note, this song was on the charts when I came into the world. And being a pro wrestling fan, I remember Rick Rude using this as his entrance music.
Thanks for posting. Great memories of playing that in high school pep band until about 10th grade. Then suddenly it was gone. We staged mini revolts by playing it anyway.
I'VE GOTTEN MY DEGREE ON ARTS AND LITERATURE ON YESTERDAY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ROME AND SOON WE WILL CELEBRATE THE RITE OF DELIVER OF THE TITLE AND I WANT THIS TRACK DOWN!!!!!!! YEHA YEHA YEHA
I first heard this on a Monty Python episode (the undressing in public sketch) and I've tried to figure out what it was till I watched Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra. Now I know.
what a great timeless tune, the bleeeer of the trombones and trumpets and the bash of the drums. this track will continue to turn men on and make women feel like getting up for a jiggle forever
This is the national anthem of burlesque! I love it!

I remember my mother shopping in Macy's when this song came on the store music system, she picked up a kitchen towel and did a little dance to this.

Two things: as a recording here on YouTube, I've heard better quality; and
secondly, Heny Mancini's, "Hubcaps & Taillights" is a better song of this genre.
The best one of all is Buddy Morrow's, "Night Train".

This is actually a rather sad tune. The wailing. (If you can temporarily disassociate the mental image of a burlesque stripper from it.)

FWIW, Rose composed "The Stripper" in 1958 as the B-side to "Ebb Tide:. The movie "Gypsy" in '62 propelled the song to fame.
