Hi U-All; I own a Fender Ash Deluxe Telecaster MIA nice axe.
The only thing is the strings SUCK!... I was thinking of installing DR Black Beauties strings on my tele, but before I do I like to ask you or anyone out there, are they a good string to use with a Telecaster? They will stand out much better then the stock strings that came with my axe.
Thanks for the help. I'm learning the second solo to Crossroads and you have to do this very technique on the 19th fret. I figured it out what to do myself but I wasn't sure because it's so hard to fit my two fingers so close together that high up.
Hey Jody, Always enjoy your videos! Love that Tele! Good lesson!! Man you can do it all! Do you have any music on cd?(not teaching) Or were you in a band??? Thanks again! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"
I'm sure when he filmed this video, the number thing he was worrying about was negative youtube ratings. Youtube was probably not invented yet when this was recorded.
I know it's easier with a flattened finger but tonally it sounds better with two fingers. Unless you can grab both strings with one pad of your third finger then tonally it's the similar.
You have to have a high action on vintage style Fenders because the fingerboard radius is so small (7.25") If the action was low the strings would just 'choke' out when you bent it.
the pick usually is fault of strings breaking;unless your strings are really old.9's are the best for this kind of bending.watch Bob Kulick'S lesson of Kiss' "All American Man".he bends by pulling the string behind a hammer on.
Great video. And what an awesome fingerboard on your Tele.
You know: I'd LOVE to see a version of this video for folks who are wedded to picks. Learning to use my picking hand without a pick seems daunting. I'm more interested in focusing on my fretting hand for the moment.
it would just be more crisp with a pick but not much different and not any more difficult -fingerrs will always have the advantage because you cant pick 2 or more strings at once with a pick. Personally I practise both ways.
this guy is an excellent teacher - just wish he'd been around when I was learning 50 years ago - wudda saved me a helluvalotta time! - but maybe spoiled the fun of finding out 4 myself...hmm? Funny thing - a half century ago none of us thought this stuff would last - how wrong can u be!
JUst happened on to guitar lesson vids for the first time today.
I've watched about 10 so far including a few of your's Jody and must say you have a wonderful demeanor for putting students at ease and that helps make learning a whole lot easier.
I've always loved this little bend-lick style, I just called it a "warm transition", because I've never known how to do it. Now I do! Thanks a million.
In portuguese please =/

Show the technique before talking for 10 years, saves you a lot of negative ratings and our time.

no need to use two fingers. i use one finger and pull down towards the ground, and with a pick. way easier and exactly the same

honestly, I just do it with one finger. it's easily in my opinion.

Agreed. The only problem is that you have to jump your hand out of position. Neither way is perfect.

I just tried with my guitar through my amp. There was not a tonal difference. =(

Does Jody use a very high string action on his Tele?
That's the impression I have for watching this.
So high action is better for bending?
RodrigoCFD 3 years ago
it's all about your technique. J. Mascis from Dinosaur Jr. has really high action. it's all about how you attack the strings.
jhachey222 2 years ago

im a beginning guitarist lol so my queston is...wont the strings snap from bending the strings that far up????

nope
Slaveaway 3 years ago
naw 1/2 to a whole won't break strings if done the right way' if your guitar isnt well intonated you may fall out of tune a little

so you gave me a thumbs down? i just thought the note on the 5th fret would sound better than the 6th.
industrybee 2 years ago
playing 2 strings can be done with a pick. you can use your ring and pinky fingers.
Imatotalass 2 years ago
Check Jerry Donahue from the Hellecasters for a reality check in the flat pick/finger pick-style. Man, we mere mortals can only dream.

You teach really well dude. But I agree with the below posters point about playing the lick first.
Opening with- "Today I'm going to teach you this...((play lick))
...would be a great start to the vid.
