  • Hopefully it won't look like this today!

  • I've been on a chairlift doing that before. It wasn't that bad for me though, because my chair just happened to stop on the tower, but it made for great first person video of the event. It sure was cold waiting for the lift to reopen though.

  • better than rollercoaster ...

  • this makes me feel so much safer

  • @skiddock was this storm on the second of january this year? and whats the title of the song? I am interested cause we are discussing your video in a forum for ropeways and someone already told us the reason, why only this one chair is dancing

  • @ArlbergIrrer: The song is called "Be my girl". It is performed in 1998 by Low Profile, a local band from Willich near Düsseldorf in Germany. Unfortunately, they don't make music together any more.

  • where is the looping :D

  • woohoo willich! go wihelm massen strasse!!

  • Where is it exactly in Tirol? Which Ski Resort? Do you know the exact name of the ropeway?

  • @ArlbergIrrer, @alexpthe1: Have a look at the tags!

@all: If anybody wants to know the exact name of the ropeway, please write me a private message and state why you are interested in this particular detail.

  • Hallo,

  • where are these lifts?? :DD i dont wanna go there.

  • i aks because im going to ski on next week :D

  • Feel free to go there, it's in Austria.

  • Uhh horrible, I ski a lot so I'm afraid of accidents. Where is that?

  • It's in Tyrol, Austria, Europe.

  • Maybe that the turbulence behind the chair on the return side started it? Blew the wind in direction against the top station also a little bit from the return side of the lift? I`ve seen simular situations whith our chairlift in Oppdal, Norway. It`s very important to have possible turbulence in mind, when we have to stop the lift due to strong wind. Even a tower can start "ballets" like this. I think the situation would not appear if the chairlift had ben moved a few meters more.

  • Well, that's an interesting point... I thought the reason for the swinging was the Doppelmayr's construction of the bubble, which is lower at the front than at the back and therefore forming kind of a "sail" which catches the wind coming from the rear and below.

  • How strong was the wind anyway?

  • I don't know exactly, but I suppose it was about 9 bft, maybe more.

  • 2 things - one why isn't the air chair swinging, and two, since the chairs detachable, why didn't they put it on the rack ??? i live by a ski area and noticed that because taking the chairs off takes a lot of time, they don't always do it, but they do for the ones towards the top, during or before a big storm.

  • The other chair isn't swinging because the wind blew in direction of the top of the mountain (i. e. from left to right in the video). A closer look on the bubble reveals that it is open to the back of the chair, so the wind can get under the bubble of the chair riding mountain-up, but simply blows over the bubble of the chair riding mountain-down.

  • The featured lift is central in this particular skiing area. I think they ran the lift as long as the storm wasn't too hard, and when they eventually had to stop transporting people there was no more time left to detach the chairs.

  • Nonetheless, only the chair I filmed and three other ones did that storm dancing. They were the top four chairs, and the filmed one is the topmost. All other hung almost totally still. So maybe they just underestimated what might happen.

  • its totally wrong calculation... i think so this comp. engineers must know the wind speed, wind direction !!! And how they allow this ??? I feel pain when i was watching it, that you can imagine how damage on haul rope... Its better system Bi-cable ( Funifor ) which possible operation although 100 Km wind speed. By the way i know the Company ( Chair's frame ) always same problem unfortunately... They shoud check their calculation for each projects. (CY From Turkey)

  • That can't be good for it...

  • Well, I suppose not, but the next day it ran as nothing has happened. We should ask an engineer about that.
