  • GOD BLESS YOU MY BRO. THE FEELING AWAYS AROUND!!!

  • Excellent video, very tasteful stuff. I esp enjoyed 4.18 - 4.26, daaamn!

  • u'll never get better practicin wit dat

  • I love the groove. Ive played this video multiple times. It sticks with me anyway.

  • 6 people who watched this vid cant even scratch the surface of dhaynes' sill

  • I ADORE your work with Till Brönner on "Chattin' with Chet" and "Blue Eyed Soul"

  • awesome performance man!

  • Do you have an 18x16 bassdrums?

  • which set did you find to be the better kit overall?

    the hipgig or this one

  • I've listened to this at least 10 times today. :)

  • This is INSANE!!!

I can't even play real instruments (like, keep a beat)...I do a bunch of electronic production - but if you can follow and hear the beat (any of you drummers can, some 'civilians' like myself can) it's just amazing how he's dancing around it. So glad you put the little chord thing with the metronome or I never would've caught it.

  • brilliant, really interesting

  • you should like this guy at my highschool on drums just amazing on the timing wish i had it.

  • gud feel takes practice dis stuff aint easy

  • holy shit man. awesome feel. great perception.

  • This guy has shown me in a few minutes all of the ways I can play with and around the time. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

  • I like this.

There are different ways of playing around the timing. That's good.

  • You know at first this sounds a little odd, but I soon realise as the video progresses how incredible and clever this is. David is an amazing player (see my nanopad videos) also some stuff on KORGTV has great footage. I think if you don't get it then you may not understand what's being shown here

  • Whatever the hell you guys are bitching about, this guy knows what he's doing. Great job! :)

  • From one drummer to another... DAMN MY BROTHER!!!

  • This confuses the fuck out of me... It's amazing, but I get the feeling that even if I could play this, I wouldn't...

  • Wow, this is really outstanding. I'm years away from being able to play something like this, if ever. Beautiful. This is a good example of the kind of stuff you just can't teach, you've got to find the feel by yourself.

  • some of the best bit of drummin on YT.

  • Sick man!!

I'll be definitely listening/watching this vid for daily inspiration/education.

    Thanks for the upload Dave!!

  • I think I finally got your comment?

I really don't understand it though.

So, by " creative stuff "................................

What exactly is it that you mean?

Becuase these aren't just rudaments Dave is playing!

If you looked at some of comments on here you probably would've noticed that by now.

Can you please explain to me where it is you're coming from? Or better yet, show me?

  • You spelled rudiments wrong. Clearly you're an expert.

  • Not an expert by any means. Just know a little about the instrument since I have been playing continually since I was 5.

    I turned 55 in March 09.

What is creative? Well I am a painter as well and I don't do flowers. I do a kind of free thinking canvas that has in it real objects and those that you just think that you see. Quite hard to explain.

  • That's neat. Irrelevant to the argument mostly, but neat. You want experimentation/innovation, this guy is giving it to you out the butt, the kind of loose syncopation he is using is insane. Frankly, I've met a lot of dudes who've played for decades and know very little, ripping on a near-legend like David Haynes is kind of a naive thing to do. it's cool that you find yourself so cultured, but you could use a refresher course in drum-sense.

  • Let me say this another way....Max Ernst could have been an incredible draftsman. He would have been considered excellent. He decided to display his talent a little more creatively, as a painter guided by open ended thoughts with no boundaries. Not sure that this gentleman is doing the same...

So sorry that I have not bowed to the king.

  • Except that he actually is doing just that. That's what this video is showcasing, he's putting tons of stress on time, and creatively interpreting how to play 4/4. It really doesn't matter how many names you can drop here, guy, they're completely irrelevant. Don't rip on people when you've haven't the slightest idea what you're talking about.

  • HAHAHA MAN U R FUNNY

  • Loved this!!! Awesome!

  • This is excellent! Absolutely amazing. Everything is so tasteful and executed beautifully. You truly are a genius!

  • your awsome!

  • nice sound...

    i like your drumming style...

    you are my inspiration...

    Great..!!! Thank you very much..

    God Bless You..

    Regards,

    Demas Narawangsa from INDONESIA

  • HMM some intresting changes in tempo while your playing this one...the tuning is also very beautiful

  • changes in tempo? where??

theres the same click track the whole way through

  • Hi my name is Morten, Norway

There are now changes in the tempo, you do however "misplase" the the groove and it makes it a lot more interresting.

    Very relaxed, smooth drumming.

    Sinc.

    Morten

  • this was liek finding gold...

  • I hate to be lost in the midle of the song.. :-) Nice, great, AMAZING sense of time!

Not to mention the drum tuning absolutely perfect!

    Congrats!

  • hey man..great kit.. what hihat do you use ? great playing by the way

  • Nice playing! IMpressive! thats some difficult playing there... And I agree, what snare, with What head>??

  • Killin!!!

  • what kind of snare is that?

  • Incredible my brother. Love It! KUNO

  • Hi D. Haynes, which model is the drum you're using on this video???

    Best Regards

  • WHAT WERE THOSE CHORDS?

  • was that improved ... sometimes it sounded like... our is it just your jazzy way of playing drums :D?

  • so good

  • i like a lot heavyer music!!! and drummers who plays a lot harder!! u are good but hard rock and heave metal drummers act like they are better and plays a lot harder and thats why i like them more!!

but still.. u are rely damn good man!! wish i was that good!

  • PScoolIPS, it's harder to make mistakes when you're playing fast. I agree it might sound cooler playing fast, but this takes skillz.

  • ya man fooling around with the time like that... i'd say it's a lot harder than metal songs with straight 4/4 beats

  • whooo, i don't have any clue what you're playing! sounds nice!!!!!

  • heftig geil

  • Men, you´re just too good to be human

  • u nasty!

  • great tact, great sound, you are a genius, sounds everything so simple, in a beginning you sound to 6/8 after the 2:49 minute you sound to 4/4 your displacements are ingenious and musical I do not have but words single congratulations, thanks for this music.

  • great stuff to improvise to. I am a guitarist and this stuff is like food for me.

  • Why did you take the click off? Either way its still good.

  • 1Xanadu12, it's just the metronome to help keep in time.

  • Yeah, I understand that. But if i was going to post a video on the net Id try to put the click on a separate track so i can remove it later. Maybe thats just my sneaky ways though :)

  • Yeah, I see what you mean. lol

  • doesn't it kill the point though if the video is about him "playing with Time?" Without the click it would come across more as just random drum playing, rather then well executed displacement, no?

  • lol! at 4:22 he does a blast beat!

  • freakin' awesome. Great feel!

  • unreal

  • Awesome, that´s what i call tight !! i never saw something like this before. You are dancing between the time ?? Yeeha. Somewhen u have to explain me how to play this crazy stuff as nearly as u do !! Pleeeeze

  • Nice kit there mate!!

  • HEY!!!

GO THERE MAN..... AWESOME!!! Now we are talking..!

    This is a 10 Star video! **********

  • fantastic!

  • Dave you should check out 'autechre'.

  • very enjoyable

  • hey , david , Youre a gift to the world.

  • Where'd the tune come from with the beat-modulating blips? Did David write the tune as an exercise?

  • Fantastic playing. And for the people w/ the inferiority complexes trying to say he's "off" you have utterly no clue what you're talking about.

Listen to how the grooves modulate around the clicks. Even though the whole piece is pretty linear as you listen he's all over the place in relation to the click, and that's simply phenomenal.

  • excelente domini del tiempo

    muy bueno

  • wow that is very impresive playing right in the pocket...im trying so hard to do that

  • Really fantastic playing. To anyone who doesn't hear it, he's right in time all the time. Tabla players in the Indian Classical tradition do this quite a lot.

    Keep drumming!

  • i love the part where he gets into a funk rhythm

  • Wait, does you play the drums? Cause I mean, anyone could sightread that! All joking aside, my jaw hit the floor.

  • i enjoyedthis and im not even drunk

  • superb... incredibly playful... a good showreel...

  • U remind me of John Blackwell IM LOVIN IT!!! WOOO!!!

    PERFECT TIMING!!!

  • talentoso, pero aburrido para mi gusto

  • OK anyone who knows anything about music knows this Haynes is completely and totoally IN TIME if you listen carefully to the metronome lcick track he is completly in sync with it.. Dave Weckl used the same techniques.. Personally .. I think Haynes is ON POINT !!

  • yeah ur right...he does use some a lot of triplets though so they think hes out of time when he really isnt.

  • It's not off-time sped's... it's called groove. If anyone is 1/100th as talented as this guy, write me and send me a link to your performance. LOVE to check it. Have some respect and go back to learning your Winger covers...

  • yeah, well ehm i heard one hit that was out of sync.

  • Nice, I've been looking around for a piece just like that, you should make more like it.

  • Ok, please do not criticize him for being off time, THE NAME OF THE VID IS PLAYING WITH THE TIME! jeeze, thats y hes getting off, hes just laying back the feel, and its sounds cool.

  • from 4:00 to the end waz awesome

  • not too bad but it did seem to go a little bit out of tempo and its too fast for the backtrack...but some good rythm overall 7/10

  • he waz playing thru to clicks on the metrenome at a time

  • wow i love how random people come on here and grade people, when they probably have absolutely no idea what they are talking about.

a "bit out of tempo" and too fast are the same thing, because tempo is speed! but im sure you knew that already seeing as your apparently qualified to give him a rating.

If you want to judge him USE THE FUCKING SYSTEM THATS ALREADY THERE. see the little stars? your a fucktard

  • hahahahahaha you're right people nitpick at shit just for the sake of being dicks yet they are wrong almost all the time nor do they know what they are talking about

  • i think its because these kids are not qualified in anything and have no friends, so they come on here and try to sound like they know shit. I know maybe one or two people that could judge this guy, and that kid definitely doesnt know anything about timing if he is saying its too fast and off tempo. I want to find him and slap him across the face with a giant dildo.

  • You're a genius =)

  • obviously what he's doing isn't for simple minded folks like yourself.

  • V.GOOD

  • Very fine .

  • i love how you played to an off-rhythm from the original time signature...

  • Very smooth around the set. I would like to see him play a 10 or 12 set piece with a double bass. That would be talent.

  • IT IS COOL

  • wonderful to wake up to good pure music.

  • This guy is good.

But I wouldn't say he's far away from myself, there are just a few things I need to practise on and then I'll be able to do stuff like this easily.

Of course, I've played for like 7 years.

  • you sure you're done?

  • Whatever

  • This guy is a talent. He's good.

  • excellent

  • maaaan

keeping in time is insaaane :)

  • nice paying, i've played drums few years ago, but then i gave up somehow :P i have this little Sonor set with paiste's crash and hihat :D i should get more stuff...

  • Excellent playing!

  • WOW! :-0

  • excellent. don't ever give up the drums!

  • Yeah! Finally i found here somebody who feeling the music! You're good, man!:)

  • Very nice. Very very nice. I enjoyed that very much. Keep it up.
