This was a hot shot move. The correct T/O profile would have been a pedal turn until he was facing the valley, then move forward and dive down once clear of the landing pad. Looks cool, but that certainly not the safest way to do a pinnacle T/O.
Umm...it's a Pinnacle situation...he did exactly what he was supposed to do...turned altitude into airspeed to try and stay out of his model's danger zone for auto rotating. It may have been thrilling to watch and ride..but the pilot was actually acting in the safest manner for their machine and passengers.
At higher altitudes the airs thinner thus making it harder for the blades to produce lift. during takeoff the pilot has to push the engine to it's limits and then descend fast to keep the engine from overheating.
You'd say it if you didn't care about something or were unimpressed: Friend: "Do you want an ice cream?" Me: "meh".
It's sometimes used as an adjective: "the film was meh".
It's pronounced so that it rhymes with "yes" or "get".
It's quite a new english word. It was invented on the internet a while ago, became popular because of the simpsons, and was included in the dictionary in 2008.
From a pilot's perspective he seems to be trying to leave the helipad area asap and gain speed + clearance, in case he loses power in his engine, allowing him to auto-rotate (auto-rotation is the maneuver helipilots do when they have no power from the engine(s) in flight and have to use the potential energy left in the main rotor and glide to a safe landing).
It looked a little bit aggressive in my opinion but also I can't really tell what sort of terrain he's at, specially at that cliff.
@allantotti Not a pilot. So want to ask if its possible that he is in so high altitude that he can't maintain hover in not in ground effect so he has to make that maneuverer to take speed? just a question.
@anariaq@anariaq Hi there. That is a great question and it might happen depending on the helicopter's performance and the altitude involved. I can tell that this is a AS350 B3, and it's one of the best single engine helos to operate in high altitude so I doubt it would apply to this case. :)
@allantotti Thats I think is true. Did not see that its actually empty when he did it. So thats should not be a problem as you said. Now you mentioned it I have been on an AS350 in high alt flying in Greenland. So I should have known :) BTW the pilot back then actually made almost the same maneuverer when he took of :P
@CommonRaven Perhaps the classification of a "slightly over confident but probably good pilot" would have been better than "luncatic and potential killer". Indeed I was wrong by assuming he was to enter the DMCurve. I should have said there was a very high risk of entering it. BTW it is applicable on a downhill manouvre since it is a height-velocity diagram. Height being the distance to the ground! Your VSI is no factor in that matter. Nevertheless, let's enjoy someone elses hazards...
@pulsejet1 & @CommonRaven:4)When diving past the pinnacle he enters the right side of the dead man's curve: High speed and low height. An autorotation is very difficult if not impossible on that side of the curve.
5)By the way: all textbooks will read to NEVER dive down the slope when clearing the pinnacle. I just hope this brief explanation prevents others from pulling this stunt, because that what it is. And pulsejet1: I am a rated commercial helicopter pilot. Is this dumb enough for you?
@pulsejet1 & @CommonRaven: 180 degrees into a tailwind situation. First thing that will happen is loss of ETL when speed builds up. If a katabatic wind is present it will just get worse and a close encounter with the mountain will be inevitable.
3)Should there be an anabatic wind, speed build up could be agressive and VNE can be easily exceeded due to the aid of gravity. Resulting in flapback and roll belly up with very little time to react and then there is that mountain again.
1)It's an airspeed over altitude takeoff (not the other way around), meaning building up speed is more important than gaining altitude. This does NOT mean you can drop altitude like crazy but you have to maintain it! The pinnacle provides the instant altitude which provides you to convert the alt into IAS gain.
2)Assuming he lifts off with a head wind (entering the deadmans curve to approximately 60ft mind you) he then turns... continue next post
@CommonRaven I know, I was responding to a comment that referred to the pilot as a 'potential killer'. Obviously not knowing anything about helicopters. It looks wild, but is a very practcal way to get into forward flight. I was just asking for an example of why this would be dangerous, because it really isn't.
Not the prettiest take off, however it's a good technique to get enough airspeed quickly enough to be able to autorotate, besides it seems to be flying quite high in density altitude!
porqué decis que está en la curva del hombre muerto? (dead man's curve) he have speed and altitude, if he enter on autorotation, he should not have any problem, bcs he have all requirements to make a good autorotation
The pilot just picked up an old lady from the house with severe diahorrea. Her toilet was blocked and this was an emergency as her stomach was already rumbling. The helicopter was brand spanking new and he didn't want any accidents.
This guy is a potential killer if there are passengers on board! Ignores all hazards imaginable. It is just a matter of time until Murphy's Law catches up with him. I will never get in with this lunatic...but it does look nice though.
I know this place,i have been there. It's Hornli Hut on Matterhorn. It's on altitude of 3260 ASL . It's amazing to fly so precise on this altitude.. Damn good pilot
That guy knew exactly what was behind him and where it was safe to go. Within a couple of seconds of taking off, he'd even have a good chance of coping with an engine failure.
