really great interpretation grieg's concerto, congratulations. however without being rude i have to say that the person who said this is the best interpretation should listen to the lipatti verion. i know it s unfair to compare a god to a human but it's also unfair that lipaati has a lot fewer views. you should listen and discover the genious.
The secret to success is genetic superiority and dedication. Look at those long, beautiful fingers. Even her amazing speed and coordination is, without the slightest doubt, partially due to superior genes. Many have tired; none reach her level; why? She was born a princess and has developed herself into a goddess.
The first ten seconds of the 2nd movement are out of this world. The rest is just heavenly and brings chills down my spine for the pure beauty of it.....
Beautiful composition and pianist. But I don´t really get the thrills from this performance... It´s good from many angles, but it´s not good enough to be great. Very VERY few pianists are great btw..
I dream, I dream of Norway's beautiful mountains, villages and cities, I'm back in Bergen again when I hear your beautiful interpretation of my yndglingskomponist
Im sorry, But This Concerto Is All About The Second Movement . And How Fast Is Not So Important !!! And Dont Compare Her With Horowitz. 2 Different Methods.
I dont care! Horowitz' genious, Beethovens compotional talent and cosmic feeling and so on. This is my favourite composer and panist at the same concert. Extraordinary interpretation, feeling and sound. Wish i was there
I avoided watching a professional perform this piece before i played it for my senior recital. After watching this, I realize I should have looked this up earlier. It really would have helped a lot to see a professional's take on how to play it. I feel so inadequate now! But at the same time, inspired. I only learned the first movement but I hope I can learn to play it even half as well as you!
Valentina, thank you so very much to let us have this quality on internet :) This is so soothing. Why isn't this on cd? Pls...let them record this on cd.
I love Valentina!! I've watched this performance on Youtube over and over and never get tired of it. My only problem is with the orchestra . . . at times there seems to be a power control between the higher chaired violins . . quite a demonic powerplay . . . you can tell when the performance rests on them . . but Valentina is unparalleled in her performance!
the secret of her success is that she is completely relaxing her muscles after each stroke. This technique comes from Liszt and she understood how to preserve her from muscular problems. In her repertory are the most physique pieces existing and she does them brilliant. This capacity of relaxin allows her to go on without problems (Horowitz could not...)
@uhartchristian yes you are totally right ! i think she is one of the rare pianists who manage to have the liszt technique. she has "dead hands". thats the only clue liszt gave us: to have dead hands lol
I just love armchair critics - I think at this point we can safely say that anything which needs to be said about the piano can be said AT the piano - not through youtube video text comments.
I think what I meant is, god wasted no ingredients when he made "Valentina". For sure she makes a lot of people seem stupid. For one, their stupid opinions. She defies convention.
unjustly awarded I'd say. Too similar to Schumann's, and for a first movement, not conveying grand ideas, emotion or development compared to the other greats (Brahms 1-2, Tchaikovsky 1, Beethoven 3-5, Mozart 20-1,. Rach 2-3).
Of course its a good concerto, and the cadenza is fantastic, but is very repetitive (although so is the Schumann concerto it mimics). I'd be interested to know what its about.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The Cadenza is too good for the rest of the first movement. It's so stormy compared to the rest of the movement. The problem of this movement is although the melody is beautiful, the lack of subsidiary themes means it lacks the dramatic tension of a brahms/beethoven concerto for eg, and grieg's abilities to develop a single melodic idea are not as good as say Tchaikovsky's
i'm not sure i agree, the power and affirmation of her pianistic style seem more masculin to me, but (if that's what you meant) there is indeed a incredible sensibility in her playing.
i can't stop watching you Val. and your vids are bascially the only ones on the whole of youtube i leave comments for. that's how impressive and amazing you are.
next time i ll check all comments to see if maybe someone already said sth similary, lol. the one and only schaefer1697 found the one who dropped his stick, no one else!
@cvalkan4 HAHA!! Hadn't seen it!! Embarassing as when you surprise a body builder looking at himself. Those things that make us realize we're just small creatures...

I agree with angelviolin14. Valentina is playing this piece the way it should be played. This is the world's most popular piano concerto & has been well covered. Out of all I've ever heard I definitely choose Valentina's version (come on, where is the CD/DVD :). I've seen them both, and Val as soloist in a whole, fantastic concert !
Wow what a nice peice...Valentina is a great piano player. I have to say she's one of the few that you can actually feel what she's trying to convey through her music...or at least to me. Valentina and Hilary (Hahn) are both exceptional artists and I hope to see them soon.

Grieg was not a great concert or symphony composer, his speciality lay in making smaller pieces for piano or vocals.

That's why his concerto is near the top of the standard repertoire, I suppose.
