according to Bono, it was writ in the perspective of Christ for their non-'born again' bassist Adam Clayton, who changed roles with the Edge who did bass for their closer track on the LP "40" (based on Psalm chapter 40 verses 1 to 3).
reading all the stuff about the lad being a band members son lol the same boy is on the boy album ,Ian something escapes me ,but Larry Mullen being his dad ,our Larry must have been putting it about at 8 year old ,as u2 are about 18 year old boys ,when boy came out and 2-3 year later on war lol {in short the lad has nothing to do with the band ,and in another post ,theres a lad on here who knows the boy and explains he modelled for the album covers only {bit of clarity i hope}
@Dynose of course you're right, they talk about serious things like war and death. But I have to say that art is not only about something, it's beauty anyway, and people are free to take it even with meanings very different from the first which comes to the mind. This music gives various great feelings which can be independent from the words. It's important to know the text and the intention of the songs, but it's not just that. Love to you all
listen to the lyrics... they named the album war for a reason, cuz of the civil war. And u guys say that u like to get wasted. here they talk about death
@sequalls ..i might be wrong,dont think so,the female harmonies were provided by the"coconuts", they were stablemates in island records..kid creole and the coconuts...and they had a top brass section....so my guess is.................
i've got 'red light' cut into a Polish post card. paid £25 for it about 25 yrs ago. does it play? no idea! it looks like it should and not many of them around for sure! great tune, album, band etc
Started w/ WAR...then came UNFORGETABLE FIRE... went back and got BOY n OCTOBER... + WIDE AWAKE IN AMERICA ep..(Bass Trap... a "buried" track; my single top fav. rock instrumental of ALL TIME here) **pause** then came THE JOSHUA TREE! Without it I would simply not have made it through adolescence. So, you get the point: I'm a fan.
Question for fellow afficianado's who playing the brass on this track? Bono? Another member of the band? A studio stud? Not crazy important, but I am curious.
Everything these guys did through Unforgettable Fire was genius. Then the posing and the radio hit writing started... I like to just pretend the band died in a plane crash on the way to the first recording session for The Joshua Tree. That way they remain untainted legends in my mind. :-)
that's off base to me, they had some hits and then they become posers? they did some of their most innovative and interesting work in the 90's. people need to stop living in the past. i love ALL eras of U2. yes WAR is probably my fave lp ever, but U2 has meant so much to me, from the beginning till now...
@KENKENNIFF Agree! I LOOOOOOVE this song...since the 1 st time I heard it. I don't think they buried it, just another victim of corporate radio deciding for us what is good.
good album to listen to when you're all wasted & heartbroken. Raw, Passionate, sensual. Even mystically charged almosphere!,..Well to me that's what It evokes!
IT totally changed my life when I was 13. incredibly emotional record. amazing production. probably the biggest reason i am as into music as i am today.
I remember my moms reaction when she saw this cover. Brings back memories from jr. High school. Soon after Boy,October, and War....I moved on to my punk rock days.
U2 & THE COCONUTS!!! from the WAR album
according to Bono, it was writ in the perspective of Christ for their non-'born again' bassist Adam Clayton, who changed roles with the Edge who did bass for their closer track on the LP "40" (based on Psalm chapter 40 verses 1 to 3).

I feel like there was a lot of atmospheric space in U2's early work between each band member, like on War and Boy. I miss that about them.
