Nvm, they don't have enough music appreciation to understand what just happened.
I was about to get mad, but a friend long ago told me to never get mad at people that work at a menial job or in this case those that have the musical knowledge equivalent.
Mimi Fox is a wonderful person. When I used to go hear her in hotel lounge in San Jose CA, she always asked me, "Did you bring your horn?" Trying not to look too overwhelmed with joy, I would run like mad to the parking lot for my tenor. What a delight it was to sit in with her! She was very helpful and entirely unpretentious. One thing I found interesting is that she said she did not learn guitar from guitar players. She said she copped jazz solos from horn players like Charlie Parker.
I saw her live about 5 years ago and I was completely blown away. She completely mastered the instruments and the songs. She gave a clinic after the performance and she showed how she could play the same tune in different positions, in different keys, restricting just to the top 3 string or bottom 3.
Acoustics, She is one of the guitarists that gets that hears it in her head before she plays it. Her facial expressions is the music coming out of her to the guitar. Totally get it !!!!! It's beautiful !!!!!!
Well, after a lot of guitar-slinging solo stuff as an intro, the title song starts abouit a minute and a half in. I guess that's jazz... take a melody and use your technique (her's is incredible, by the way) to wrap some new musical strains around it. I like it a lot!
Putting to one side how ultra cool ( or pretentious ) this playing was. I could see no connection with When the saints go marching in either in chord progression or melody.
It could have just as easily been called Happy Birthday, Smoke on the water, a 5th of Beethoven or old Mc Donald had a farm
@wobblingbaby2 Her stuff sits on top of the form. She is keeping the other song going as she plays on top of it. She is "interpreting" the melody and using chord subs and reharmonizing the song. But rest assured, she is playing with When The Saints Go Marching In.
No wobblingbaby2, I wouldn't have. But the first time I heard Oleo by Sonny Rollins, and Steeplechase by Charlie Parker, I didn't know they were using the chords to I've Got Rhythm verbatim. Just because my ear didn't recognize them, doesn't mean they are not there. Once I began to recognize the "Rhythm Changes", I began to hear them in other tunes like Cotton Tail by Duke and Rhythm-a-ning by Monk and Anthropology by Parker. Mimi's working in that same bebop tradition here.
It's odd to me how people on youtube judge an artist by one song or performance. I guess they're used to auto-tuned puppets who dance around and always sound the same so they think, 'Oh this is all this musician does'. Pretty sad!
I have all of Mimi's records and she can groove with the best of them. From simple bluesy lines to pushing the boundaries as she is doing in this performance. She can do it all. She's a bad ass!
Mimi is really good. But, people like her are like scientists. Their main objective is to push the limits of music and take it to new levels. I personally can see the talent. However, it is like going to a math lecture when you hear someone like play. For the ehhheads out there; that is what they like. I would rather listen to something more simple and upbeat.
I don't think you've got a grip on jazz. The very essence of jazz is to continually push boundaries. Maybe you're more into Kenny G, a.k.a the elevator mistro?
besides, this isn't so much sonic exploration, it's really just a very personal interpretation of an otherwise cliche'd standard. Props to her for putting so much soul and originality into a piece like this.

Seriously, I know what you mean, but it is much more difficult than you might think at first. It's quite subtle, and believe me, there ARE wrong notes...as I prove to myself daily whenI practice.
I'm a guitarist for 30 yrs; why is just a boys' club; why aren't more great female guitarist like this chick? She wails at the hardest american style there is. And I bet almost no one's heard of her. Shame.
i definitely have to stand with my original opinion this is not a good version of this classic tune. if you think i am wrong about this being ramble noodling thats your opinion, but i do believe that many have taken this classic to a much higher level of rythm and feel. no doubt she knows her keys and scales but this piece she is playing went way out in left field from being an original interpretation therefore that makes it ramble noodling thats my $.02
Wow, I always respect heavy opininated opinions - even if I can't hear what they're hearing. Sounds great to me but if this isn't that good can you point me to a version that is supposed to be as good as you say? I'd love to hear it.
She looks young so she has the times left to grow. She needs to listen to guys like Angelo Debarre, Birelli Lagrene, Stochello Rosenberg etc. Hey I'm just trying to be nic
this is a brilliant adaptation of a very old gospel song that has been sung by generations of humans and as such we need to understand that this is her expression;her way of understanding music and we should stand not in judjement but in awe of her ability to give forth as such ..as a guitarist this tune is really cool with the Edownto D and A to G tuning you can get a lenny thing goin....
sad thing is, despite me not liking her very much (met up with her at monterey hs jazz festival one year), she could walk all over slash. not that she would though, jazz players aren't about who's better than who. that's a stupid metal/rock mentality i've noticed lots of people display on youtube xp
@zomgbbqwtf no offense, but this straight up isn't true. I'm a jazz guitar major at a university, and the last few years have been a process of getting exposed to as many jazz guitar players as possible. I've seen Mimi live, as well as a basketfull of other really good jazz guitarists, and trust me, there's at least as much elitism and competition in jazz as metal. It's just that jazz players usually have more knowledge than chops so the competition is different.
it depends on the University. Some are notorious. But most competition in music tends to be unhealthy. I've seen it kill people's potential. At North Texas where I went, it was a big distraction to say the least. The creative mind is mutually exclusive to the competitive instinct.
I am a jazz guitarist and this is insane!! She is rambling and have no concept of directions. She knows that is she had a backup she would be out of key. She needs to shut up. Tone sounds terrible!
Mimi Fox is certainly a great guitar player. This performance here clearly shows she is a master of guitar. This is not rambling. This is not all over the place. This is "raw" display of sheer talent. No effects and no gimmicks!!!!! Improvization exquisite!!!! Stop criticizing so much and try to listen to what the music is saying. She is not trying to say "look how great I am". Think outside the box. This is an artist and her painting. Her brush just happens to be her guitar!!!!!
Please, I need you to help me to identify an author of one music composition. Just see the short video on my channel. I really need it Thanx for understanding & help =) its not spam. I hate spam
The great thing about guitar playing is that there are so many different styles of playing. In fact new ways are being invented all the time. With each new style of playing, there is a door opened for interpretation by millions of guitarists all over the world.
Undoubtedly an amazing talent, but this kind of thing sounds a whole lot better live. I love jazz, & even try to play it, but feel it's a shame when it starts getting self-indulgent ("hey look at me!") rather than carrying you away on wings of song (to quote Tom Lehrer). This vid tended towards self-indulgence & virtuosity for its own sake. Major respect for the skill, but at times the feeling is "yeah, that's really amazing playing, and..?"
i like some jazz(KLUGH,BENSON etc..) but this just seems like ramble noodling. i know she has a huge understanding in theory but there is no sense of feel or rythm with this. i havent heard a lot of her interpretations but this might be the worst version of WTSGMI ive ever heard. at about 3:40 she grooves a little but then @ 5:00 or so just lost again
murf you obviously have misconception of what feel and rhythm is. She displays ridiculous feel and rhythm in this tune. Solo jazz guitar is different from your normal combo setting with drums/piano/bass for a rhythm section. Solo jazz guitar often has a rubato 'feel' to it
Jazz is strict structure masquerading as freedom . . . much like America, Seriously that's like the tagline of a book, you have to play in a time signature, to a constant beat, using an even number of bars with hamonic rhythem, (everyone playing the same chords.) All music is the same.
Hmmm...Have you ever heard some of Keith Jarrett's infinite song intros?? he often begins a "standard" about five minutes after improvising. And he is, rightly IMO, considered one of the true musical geniuses of all time. I love that stuff. It's really a matter of taste, I think. I only wish she played a little more "outside", actually. Maybe no tune at all!!
Not quite sure what you mean by 'hardly or needlessly quoted'. She quotes the tune at the top, then does a longish improvised bit, then starting around 1.22 she is definitely playing the tune, albeit slighty modified, and improvising over those changes.
Very nice player. Interesting choice of tune - I associate it more with Dixieland and trad jazz than with someone playing at her level of sophistication. Not sure it's a good choice for her, but what do I know...
You know, some of 'dem 'der chords she's playing require you to stretch about 16 frets. How is it that, I think, I have much longer fingers than she, yet she gets from one convoluted chord form to another without even slight hesitation or nasty clunkers?
Excellent point. I won't name names, but even many of the reputed greatest players are using that stuff nowadays. Never used them myself. But this way you take the risk of hearing EVERYTHING.
Haha!! No, I just meant sound effects, digital processing and that sort of thing. I'm sure some of them may be doing other "stuff" as well, but that's neither here nor there.
At any rate, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who appreciates this extraordinary virtuoso talent. I like all of her performances that I have seen (and this has absolutely NOTHING to do with her gender). Some of the comments here have been truly sickening.
I asked Mimi once how she got so good. "I practiced for seven years, every day, 8-10 hours a day...then I took a break." Yup. Hard core, that's Mimi! One of the hottest 6 stringers on the planet you ask me. And don't assume this is the only style she can blow...
I totally agree. This video only shows a small section of Mimi's range and talent. After seeing her live I went out and picked up one of her CDs. Since then, I'm a bit more knowledgeable of jazz and jazz guitarists. There's so many great players out there but I still listen to Mimi quite often. She can hold her own with all the rest.
"I practiced for seven years, every day, 8-10 hours a day..." Yeah, the old work hard enough and you will succeed stuff, eh? I used to practice 12 hours a day, every day, for about 4 years, while studying at Berklee. Then I collapsed and no one gave a fuck about me, so I stopped playing. All due respect to Mimi, but it's just not that simple. At least, not for many of us.
I was merely passing on a true anecdote dude, not a philosophy. If you want the other "secrets" to Mimi's success, well she's a gifted instructor and she will give you her views on that. Sorry you flamed out.
I guess this was a reply to me, since i got a note in my email. That's an intriguing point about practicing. I think you're right, but I'm still not sure how to practice.
I stopped playing for about 15 years, during which I only picked up the guitar occasionally!! I restarted about a year ago now. I'm trying to focus on ear training much more these days. But I get frustrated and feel like I just can't improve sometimes.
One of the jazz players who know exactly what they are doing. It is very intelligent playing yet full of spirit and feeling. Thanks for posting!

i definitely have to stand with my original opinion this is not a good version of this classic tune. if you think i am wrong about this being ramble noodling thats your opinion, but i do believe that many have taken this classic to a much higher level of rythm and feel. no doubt she knows her keys and scales but this piece she is playing went way out in left field from being an original interpretation therefore that makes it ramble noodling thats my $.02

this is a brilliant adaptation of a very old gospel song that has been sung by generations of humans and as such we need to understand that this is her expression;her way of understanding music and we should stand not in judjement but in awe of her ability to give forth as such ..as a guitarist this tune is really cool with the Edownto D and A to G tuning you can get a lenny thing goin....

soo313 3 years ago
sad thing is, despite me not liking her very much (met up with her at monterey hs jazz festival one year), she could walk all over slash. not that she would though, jazz players aren't about who's better than who. that's a stupid metal/rock mentality i've noticed lots of people display on youtube xp
zomgbbqwtf 3 years ago 15
@zomgbbqwtf I bet she's got a bit of an attitude huh? She's a great player, but a bit of a drama queen.
zinnington 1 year ago
@zomgbbqwtf no offense, but this straight up isn't true. I'm a jazz guitar major at a university, and the last few years have been a process of getting exposed to as many jazz guitar players as possible. I've seen Mimi live, as well as a basketfull of other really good jazz guitarists, and trust me, there's at least as much elitism and competition in jazz as metal. It's just that jazz players usually have more knowledge than chops so the competition is different.
earlgrey626 1 year ago
@earlgrey626
it depends on the University. Some are notorious. But most competition in music tends to be unhealthy. I've seen it kill people's potential. At North Texas where I went, it was a big distraction to say the least. The creative mind is mutually exclusive to the competitive instinct.

0bigfootsamonster0 3 years ago
Mimi Fox is certainly a great guitar player. This performance here clearly shows she is a master of guitar. This is not rambling. This is not all over the place. This is "raw" display of sheer talent. No effects and no gimmicks!!!!! Improvization exquisite!!!! Stop criticizing so much and try to listen to what the music is saying. She is not trying to say "look how great I am". Think outside the box. This is an artist and her painting. Her brush just happens to be her guitar!!!!!

Major respect for the skill, but at times the feeling is "yeah, that's really amazing playing, and..?"

i like some jazz(KLUGH,BENSON etc..) but this just seems like ramble noodling. i know she has a huge understanding in theory but there is no sense of feel or rythm with this. i havent heard a lot of her interpretations but this might be the worst version of WTSGMI ive ever heard. at about 3:40 she grooves a little but then @ 5:00 or so just lost again
murf5824 3 years ago
murf you obviously have misconception of what feel and rhythm is. She displays ridiculous feel and rhythm in this tune. Solo jazz guitar is different from your normal combo setting with drums/piano/bass for a rhythm section. Solo jazz guitar often has a rubato 'feel' to it

Jazz is strict structure masquerading as freedom . . . much like America, Seriously that's like the tagline of a book, you have to play in a time signature, to a constant beat, using an even number of bars with hamonic rhythem, (everyone playing the same chords.) All music is the same.

futboler454 3 years ago
Hmmm...Have you ever heard some of Keith Jarrett's infinite song intros?? he often begins a "standard" about five minutes after improvising. And he is, rightly IMO, considered one of the true musical geniuses of all time. I love that stuff. It's really a matter of taste, I think. I only wish she played a little more "outside", actually. Maybe no tune at all!!
franco6719 3 years ago
I like her improvisations, and Kieth Jarret too.
But why pay Ascap and or BMI their copyright by using the melody or title of a song when that melody is hardly, or needlesly quoted?
I went to Mimi's website and learned some stuff. She is a good teacher and player.
I watched some of her other vids too and this one is just not her best.
vegetasrevenge 3 years ago

Haha!! No, I just meant sound effects, digital processing and that sort of thing. I'm sure some of them may be doing other "stuff" as well, but that's neither here nor there.
franco6719 4 years ago
At any rate, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who appreciates this extraordinary virtuoso talent. I like all of her performances that I have seen (and this has absolutely NOTHING to do with her gender). Some of the comments here have been truly sickening.
franco6719 4 years ago
I asked Mimi once how she got so good. "I practiced for seven years, every day, 8-10 hours a day...then I took a break." Yup. Hard core, that's Mimi! One of the hottest 6 stringers on the planet you ask me. And don't assume this is the only style she can blow...
zinc1024 4 years ago 3
I totally agree. This video only shows a small section of Mimi's range and talent. After seeing her live I went out and picked up one of her CDs. Since then, I'm a bit more knowledgeable of jazz and jazz guitarists. There's so many great players out there but I still listen to Mimi quite often. She can hold her own with all the rest.
Puffk7 4 years ago
"I practiced for seven years, every day, 8-10 hours a day..." Yeah, the old work hard enough and you will succeed stuff, eh? I used to practice 12 hours a day, every day, for about 4 years, while studying at Berklee. Then I collapsed and no one gave a fuck about me, so I stopped playing. All due respect to Mimi, but it's just not that simple. At least, not for many of us.
franco6719 4 years ago
I was merely passing on a true anecdote dude, not a philosophy. If you want the other "secrets" to Mimi's success, well she's a gifted instructor and she will give you her views on that. Sorry you flamed out.
zinc1024 4 years ago 2
I found out that you first need to learn HOW to practise, I've been playing now for about 39 years and just started to understand this secret.
So you completely stopped playing?
YOUYOU47 3 years ago
I guess this was a reply to me, since i got a note in my email. That's an intriguing point about practicing. I think you're right, but I'm still not sure how to practice.
I stopped playing for about 15 years, during which I only picked up the guitar occasionally!! I restarted about a year ago now. I'm trying to focus on ear training much more these days. But I get frustrated and feel like I just can't improve sometimes.
