How high do you think they really got in that thing. 25 miles. maybe. Thats a far cry from 250.000 miles. Oh ya and they flew it home with no gas. another 250.000 miles. thats 500.000 miles round trip. NASA.... Never A Straight Answer.
Billy, can't answer all your questions here. In space, once you get going in one direction, inertia will keep you going. There is no friction: only gravity from other bodies, which gets smaller with the square of the distance. Mostly, you use a little fuel for course corrections: see movie Apollo 13, or ... buy James Lovell's book "Lost Moon". I also recommend a trip to Cape Canaveral and take a look at the Saturn V rocket in the hangar.
Right. But I believe that by "we" imissnhl meant we as the human race. These events happened in the middle of the cold war, yet the Apollo program landed people on the moon in the name of mankind. As for the people who don't believe this happened, I feel sorry for them: this was a truly inspiring moment around the world. Today we celebrate 40 years exactly from the launch of Apollo 11.
