  • What equipment is he using?

  • Best episode yet imo, I laughed at the Michael Jackson joke and I love the Biggie figure.

  • Whats the song at 6:17 ?

  • I went to Scratch Academy and graduated!!!! Boo Yah!!!

  • Respect, niggaz

  • 6.17 also naughty by nature used it, "would have done the same for me".

  • When I heard PYT I had the same reaction haha...good video man im actually going to Scratch Academy tomorrow

  • I love what you are doing man, I have watched all the videos. great job bruvah

  • I can't believe he said Kingdom Come was terrible.

  • De La souls is easily the best out of those who sampled "Knee Deep"

  • My friends always ask me questions - like who made the original and where did that beat come from... I usually know the answer...(not that I considered myself a crate digger) but I am learning so much from you I feel I like I really knew nothing... Luckily I knew *most* of this video.. but this was a fun video! 3 days and I am up to video 19... That means a lot!

  • @funktuall i sorta agree with you funktuall kingdom come was sub par for otherwise stellar albums from jay-z

  • we in toronto r followin your every move , ur still invited to canada, u should produce ur own music.keep up the history....

  • i'm sorry,, but i need to know....how the fuck did you get a Biggie Smalls DOLL?????? I thought that i have seen everything.....

  • I love this! If you play live, sooner or later something goes wrong. It's not a matter of whether something will go wrong, but when. You gotta do what you all did...laugh it off and move on with the groove!

  • Bro is nice!

  • i agree with funktuall kingdom come was terrible but i love the rest of jiggas stuff and i think he does too

  • ME, MYSELF, AND I! 5:40, that track is so smooth. Thanks man, im a youngin who is in NEED of sample basics. btw i miss the old kanye, fuck.

  • I've been waiting 18 parts for Not Just Knee Deep!!!!

  • I dont think Chico Debarge was in DeBarge, I think he went solo after the group broke up.

  • lmao my ass off at ur mj comment :D even if the the paedophile shit isnt necessarily true... the comment was amusing:L

  • lets return part 19 wonder how much i will spend online today..............

  • dooope video btw u missed out on number 6 it was use by naughty by nature - Would've Done the Same for Me

  • Dude I'm only 18 year old DJ

    I can't believe u played Debarge - I like it

  • Paul Hardcastle.

  • Get the 12" version for the best mix, great UK sampling

  • Great video!! ***let me wipe the tear from my eye!***

Sad, but it makes me realize how much current hiphop has fallen off.

  • Yo this is the hottest one of them all

. Yo Funktuall this is your format , right here!!

You need the DJ to set off as you kick it off..HIP HOP love ..

Yo FUNK you need to talk about Southern Slang and Reggaton alright much luv

  • Amen Amen 1969

  • Comment removed

  • DAZZ! DAZZ!=Disco Jazz!!!

  • 'pretty young thing, that's not what michael should be singing about' that's what gave the media the credibility when they claimed he was pedo-sexual..

  • Man where the samples at? I thought this was gonna show the top 10 sounds to scratch to?

  • actually mate its the dazz band and the track is called brick. i think you need to get schooled before u talk about the little kids

  • Check your facts fool. The Dazz Band does NOT sing "Dazz". Maybe you should look it up before commenting. It is a common mistake though.

  • the song is called "Dazz" and the group is Brick

  • Kingdom Come was FAR from horrible and the sample was used by Just Blaze who produced the song "Kingdom Come"

  • dude ,u know y'all act a fool on dis video!!! lol!

  • #9 is crazy

  • Apathy - King Of C.T. also use superfreak

  • Okay, probably a dumb question, but I am a newbie. What equipment/software/vinyl is Immortal using?

  • serato scratch. its so good!

there are alot of competitors though, traktor, virtual dj, etc...

  • funktuall, you a clown man..and yo mans is nice

  • This ep. was the best!!! Really, kids need this. Hell, I'm not a kid and I need this.

  • that good life sample is crazy

  • funktualls videos are just great

  • This series is tha best thing for hip hop , for a long time . we livin evil times for hip hop , so this is great , massive respects go out to funktuall

  • he should have been using real records, the way hiphop started

  • Oh shut up. Any idea how difficult it would be to play them all on vinyl in 9 minutes? Always gotta bitch about something.

  • i have no idea, perhaps the scratch dj acadamy can teach me,i just applied for the next season.

  • i like the red man beat but i dont see how they made that beat plus kingdom come was pretty dope wit the super hero references it was pretty dope

  • through the wire is my shit hits me in da heart every time the beat is soulful maybe cuz a shaka khan

  • lol which michael jackson shouldnt be singin bout

  • keep doin ya thing

this is why i have faith in hip hop

  • Where is that?? is that on longisland?

  • this is crazy. more bounce to the ounce used for a great hip hop song in history Aint no future in yo frontin by MC Breed, Do you by Slum Village, Aint no future 2001 by Erick Sermon

  • slum village was the first thing that popped in my mind

  • Funktuall.... damn. Where do you find this gold? You own a fuckin vinyl store or somethin? xD

    Rock on.

  • I have enjoyed all of the videos. I really loved this one because it gave the "before and after" This was wonderful. I just looooooove hip hop or should I say what hip hop used to be. I must admit I like the way it has evolved. I wish the styles could co-exist (dirty south, east coast, west coast, midwest) but it seems commercialism tarnished it. I love all of it though. The diversity. You guys have made hip hop feel good to me again. I'm coming out was also done in Florida by Raptini!

  • teach em brotha teach these young hardheaded mothafukkaz!!!

  • Kingdom Come issnt horrible!!!

  • poolhall junkie ooooo u nooo! lol

  • sorry if i already asked but is this guy your brother?

    ps still lovin the vids.

  • Love it - excellent!

  • nice!

  • Funktuall rocks!...I done a video response showing some of my favourite soul/RnB tracks but wanna do a mix showing my favourite tracks that Funktuall introduced me too...big up from the UK!

  • Love the power going out in the beginning.... funny sh*t! Love your videos

  • love the tunes man.....keep diggin and keep them comin

I also wanna now, what happened to the two last videos you've uploaded. Was it you that had them pulled down??????

    I hate funkin censorship...thats why i'm askin

  • No, I pulled them both down, myself. Some are spontaneous and if I don't like 'em after a week, they get deleted.

  • thanx for the info.......

    Waiting for part XX ;)

    cheers, from greece brother.

    BRILLIANT WORK

  • rabba dabba doo

  • So glad you left the original start in :)

    Classic :)

  • Yo, you should hit up Fancy Clowns by Madvillain.

Definitely not your usual scene, but the ZZ Hill sample is brilliant.

  • great stuff. Fun.

  • oh das wassup you've been school the s**t outta me yo lol

  • sweet

  • big up loco boy

much love and respect from greece

  • dope shit bro. dope shit, i respect you

  • yo how can u not do tha classic my name id d-nice sample u know tha song buzzsaw if u dnt know tha song is on youtube

  • i think we are all wonderin what dj funkual can do on the uno dueces

  • It's actually "Brick" by Dazz, Not "Dazz" by Brick.

  • Nah you're thinking the Dazz Band. That song came out in 76 and the Dazz Band didn't form until a year after. Brick's a disco funk band from the mid 70s.

  • I'm afraid you're mistaken. the song he played is called Brick which is by the Dazz (Band). You are wrong

  • Sorry Mike but it is YOU that is wrong. The Dazz Band is best known for "Let It Whip" but I just can't believe you can be so adamant without simply checking your facts. If you look it up, you'll realize your mistake.

  • Yo Funktuall, could you do some Company Flow and El-P samples?

I dont know if you listen to those guys but if not, you REALLY should

Matter of fact, any Def Jux artist is fine, although I really would love to know the sample for 8 Steps to Perfection by Company Flow.

If you could do that it would be much appreciated.

  • Thank you for doing this series and showing the true spirit of hip hop music. Over all your videos you show that real hip hop music has drawn on a variety of great music in numerous ways to create good hip hop and that the current generation needs to remember this if the music is to survive. I enjoy hearing you play samples I know and ones I don't and I hope you keep doing this either here on youtube or on TV.

  • Funk u cold have used Paul Hardcastle 19 for the intro but it is all gooooooood!!!

  • Track 1 also has a sample of Rapper Dapper Snapper by Otis Birdsong.

  • THANK YOU for making a video for the "kids"or the uneducated. I showed like five of these vids to my 18 y.o. cousin that is only concerned with what is on the radio or 106th and park. He wants to do beats but has no knowledge of how sampling works. I try to teach him history but it rarely helps, these videos made him more comfortable learning music history and having a better ear for samples and break beats. Now he's gonna pay more attention to the liner notes to see what song was sampled!

  • My man Funktual, I peeped ALL 19 vids & I was just as hyped as U were in each 1. Keep them comin', keep reppin hip hop, keep educating.

  • Funktual , you are the hardest working man on youtube, Rock ,rock on.

  • is that guy your brother he looks very much like you? ps great video as usual.

  • Both named Jamie, both from Long Island, but no not brothers.

  • You MUST know that!

  • I've seen all 19 videos so far and no mention of Kraftwerk, a group that was way ahead of their time. Trans Europe Express was sampled by Africaa Bambaata(Planet Rock) and Home Computer has been sampled by many as well. Please give them some props on your next video. Please!!!

  • It is bizarre that I haven't done ANY Kraftwerk yet, but I really don't listen to them which is probably why. I will try to include it on volume 20 when I get back to NY.

  • oooh, don't forget numbers by kraftwerk too...! that is one of the most heavily sampled breaks...

  • My reply to funktuall didn't post here but I did mention numbers and tour de france. those beats were heavily sampled.

  • yeah, sometimes things don't post for some reason... the wonders of technology... numbers is probably my favourite kraftwerk song, speaking of technology...

  • for me, the top 10 samples/breaks would be:

'funky drummer', 'amen'; 'synthetic substitution'; 'can you feel it' (from the jacksons live album); 'impeach the president'; 'apache'; 'ashley's roachclip'; 'nautilus'; 'big beat' and 'funky president'...

the ones to break to are 'blackbelt jones', 'funkier than a mosquito's tweeter', 'think' and 'apache'...

i think this is a good video you did, for the kids (nice and smooth/dave and mark tried to bust my groove)...

  • Those are my TOP 10 too besides the Jacksons one. I would instead take Don't Change Your Love - Five Stairsteps

  • that's a good one...

  • i love michael though... he was only 24 when he sang that song, he was a PYT himself. i do understand the comment and i don't take offense (nor do i 'wanna be startin' somethin'), but i usually just tell people to read the court transcripts, which are public documents, before they make 'young' comments about him.

nevertheless, i greatly respect him as an artist- he is one of my favourites. and hope he doesn't have auto tune all over his next album. urgh.

    peace...

  • JMJ are the letters of his name

cuttin and scratchin are the aspects of his game...

  • Say whaaaaaaaat?

    IT'S BIGGER THAN HIP HOP!

  • yo funktuall ive been following the vids last cupple days ur the shit mann and i hope u get urself a show id def. tune in on dat we need dis kidna shit in BK

  • funktuall, when u gonna include ll cool j jingling baby which sampled central line walking into sunshine. that is a great sample. peace

  • it samples dennis coffeys scorpio

  • Funktuall, youre the dj right? so way you ain't doing your thang behind the turntables?

  • Well, I don't use Serato which is what you'd need for this type thing PLUS, I thought you guys would enjoy a genuine SCRATCH Champion like Immortal. For this episode call me MC Funktual.

  • good stuff - you should hit up the scratch academy up in nyc!

  • Oh I plan to, no dubt!

  • actually snoop used george clintons atomic dog 2 for whats my name

  • I am digging the paul hardcastle album in the begining : )

  • chico debarge was not in i like it, nor was he in debarge the band, he was solo, it it was randy debarge who sang the intro.

  • yeah, chico was a baby when de barge were doing it up... remember that song 'talk to me' he did? and big daddy kane did an interpolation of 'i like it' too... i thought el sang the intro... it was randy? wow.

  • Thanks for bringing it back and showing these silly kids how we roll back in the day. Subbing ASAP. Keep it up

  • this was is my favorite episode even though they are all obvious

  • Damn Funk! I'm kinda torn because I love your videos when youre at your pad but this way of showing the song and then the sample is sick. You definitly need a 30 minute TV show!!! Keep us posted and make sure Cali can get them! or make sure you post your episodes online cuz I gotta see them!

  • Part 19 and dude is still his thang. Good job!

  • Dam dude still tearin it up cease to amaze me man!

  • props

  • COOL VIDEO!!! I CAN DIG IT SO DEEP!!!!

  • Ps. lmao to the battery running out, that happend to me once at party...Now its always plugged.

  • Speaking as Dj (Dj Juel)myself the whole Mixing of Old Samples with the new ones sounded great.. really showed how the artist blended his own version....Keep it up Funktuall

  • Wow you must have a ton of subscribers...uploaded only a day ago and already 1,000 views!

  • Love the format!

I think you should make more vids like this.

By the way if this goes on TV, PLZ keep posting the stuff online, I ain't gonna catch FLA channels, lol.

  • That Puba Joint was the shhhh....also the Redman joint...keep doin it Funk

  • What mixer is Immortal using?

  • WOW my power is gonna go out buahahahaha... but it's all gravy. Take them kids to school homie

  • funktuaalllll!

  • you should saty in more you swear when your wife lets you outside lol

    great video

  • Nice on the 1&2 DJ Immortal

  • amazing thanks for the hard work makes my life better learning all this and dicovering all these new songs

  • I think the beat from "All Night Long" was also used in the song "Happy" by Ashanti

  • great job you guys.

  • totaly great

  • Great stuff. It was great to hear the sample along with the songs that use the sample.

  • I agree. This is definitely a technique you should try to use in the future.

  • The reason I don't is very simple. The rap artists do not want these videos made. They will place a copyright claim and POOF-the video and my channel is gone!

  • They should realize that this is free advertising.

Anyways, no matter what format you use, I am a fan for life! Keep it up!

  • I laughed so hard when u you brought that B.I.G figure in... :)

  • I wish I brought it even closer. That thing was amazing looking!

  • great episode ive got the whole list on vinyl kinda common stuff but you know the feelin of hearing a sample and being able to say " I got that on vinyl....doubles in fact.." and poolhall junkies is a dope movie...peace and chicken grease.

  • funktual this is the best one ever! can't wait for the 20th anniversary version

  • I think one thing that hasn't been mentioned is how you correctly spell the names and artists of the songs exactly how they're suppose to appear. Mad props.

  • That's just my up-bringing. Thanks for noticing though.

  • Awesome... man... fuckin awesome!!! You sure you don't want Serato? Appreciate the Shoutout. You're efforts to outdo yourself never cease to amaze me.

  • Nice to have good help!!!

    thanks

    DJ Mikey Mike

  • I, Im falling you

  • i know you say all of these are gimmies, but this has been the livest one so far.

    niceness.

  • I'd like to know the name of the song and the name of the artist, the introduction, before the samples. Thanks in advance!

  • the song is "19" by Paul Hardcastle. Right there in the frame

  • Thanks mate! :)

  • GREATNESS!!!!!

  • CLASSICS my mam str8 classics

  • This is what I tell the shorties around me about, the Roots of hip hop. Thanks Brua!!

  • I love how you didnt edit out the beginning.

  • Yeah, it was a great moment that I didn't want to forget. So much great stuff ends up on the cutting room floor....but not this time.

  • THIS IS SO FREAKING Kewl !!!!!!!

  • you're the man, i love finding out what songs they sampled

  • great episode!

  • More Bounce to the Ounce*

  • Haha taking it to a whole new level:)

More ounce to a bounce is also used by South Central Cartel in Servin'em heat btw

  • that was definitely a tight vid

i like the mixing, you might have to plug in a mic next time though, i hope it doesnt scare you too much - people may start calling you mc funktual

  • this is my favorite top 10 sample countdown ever thanks for the video
