  • Totally kickass playing! Virtuoso level stuff! I'm extremely sorry to hear about the Focal Dystonia :( I have a friend I met who developed that as well.. he's now learning guitar left handed because music is basically his life. I'm very thankful you posted this so people could see you play, believe it or not there is only so much virtuoso-esque talent out here on youtube :)

  • you are awesome, and you are some of the few that plays with a flying v

  • Hi, you are the guy that wrote Unearthed Arcana? If so, damn you!!! I literally spent months trying to play your sample on the CFH website, I probably still can't play it. Great playing here too.

  • JESUS FUCKING CHRISTE O.o he is fucking awsome!

  • Hey Terry... Greg Horne (my guitar teacher, I think you know him) showed me this video about a year ago, and I was instantly hooked. I only found out very recently that you were going to be one of my instructors at National Guitar Workshop 2011. Man, being only 14 years old, all I can say is that I don't feel worthy, haha. You seem like a great guy, and I can't wait to meet you in person.

  • hahahaha I had a feeling that was the progression from In The Dead of Night by U.K. and my thoughts were eventually confirmed. This was really really awesome

  • Great video but you need to do more Terry. Shred Is Not Dead was a huge influence on my playing coming up. Still have the video tape somewhere.

  • Terry, you have such a unique style

  • Immense Terry.

All my respect to you brother, your playing is so deep and fu****** insane.

Keep on playing, don't stop to be positive man. Never!!!

A big hug from a "virtual" friend,

    Pule

  • Awesome style!

  • y el sentido es............?

  • You don't sound like holdsworth, you do sound like Terry Syrek...and that's even better.

  • I just want you to know that a lot of people look up to you. Not just cause you can play well, (A lot of guys can play well) but also because after all your success, you're still a genuinely great guy.

  • wow....i was shocked to find out about your condition man. I went to NGSW in the mid 90's... I still go the papers with exercises that you gave us. I just saw a video from jeff mcerlain here and thought...hey i guess terry should have something here... and this was the first that came. I have great memories from your classes. You, along with McErlain and Andy Timmons inspired me in those summers to keep getting better in music.

Thanks a lot...hope to hear good news from u in the future

  • National Guitar Workshop 2010 in Connecticut. Terry was probably the coolest teacher ive ever had.

  • You look metal, but sound holdsworth. thats a compliment

  • im not really a shred guy but i learned some cool shit off your shred is not dead vid.years ago at least once a year i attempt to copy some of your lix.good to see your still kicking arse.

  • terry, your book "shred is not dead" changed my life. i can never thank you enough for creating that book, my life would be very much different without your instruction...it saddens me deeply to hear about your hand...whatever music you create in the future, i will always listen and appreciate your musical abilities

-Kasey Pritchard, Thrash Metal Band Straight Jacket Guitarist

  • tone reminds of allan holdsworth...curious!

  • found out bout you today man :) and i love it ! sickk stuff im learning to *shred at the moment lol ive only been playing 2 years but i gotta work on the speed in my fret hand XD awesome vids keep them coming !

  • wow i wish the best for you! years ago i bought the shred is not dead book with vid! nice! the good thing is at least you got to jam and play for the time that you did! not many can get that good!

  • Very godd!!!..really good tecnics and creative improvization

  • I bought one of your instructional videos back in the day I think it was called Shred is not Dead but you were playing a green and black polka dot V and the video was killer you are a great guitar player with good insights.

  • I wish you would post more vids. great playing. I have full use of all my fingers and i doubt I will ever attain your level of playing. Your album aum is amazing and full of tasteful lines.

  • great playing sir! i've always loved your version of jason becker's temple of the absurd! METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • one of my favorite progressions of all time! i just listined to yngwies version b4 i found u... i like what ur doing alot better! like a tony macalpine/allan holdsworth type of phrasing with a twist... your twist is pretty sweet dude!

  • You are amazingly awesome man. I admire you.

  • muy buen guitarrista

  • Wow, you're amazing. I'm really sorry for your disease, I hope this can't cure it but, I'm 100% supporting you.

  • GREAT!!!

    Keep rockin' man

  • Nice!

Hahha, I hear the backing is UK - In the dead of night. That song is excellent, as well as fun to improv over :)

  • Just came across this video, and of course, was completely blown away! Hope all is well, and I'm sendin' ya some love....CHICAGO STYLE!

  • I wonder if there is the Taubman Golandsky method of recovery from dystonia for guitarist. I know it works for piano & violin. Now they use the principals for typing injuries also.

  • Badi assad(the brazilian guitarist) had focal dystonia and made a full recovery, they usually treat the symptoms of the disease with Botox believe it or not. its a neurological I believe so its all in the brain, which is real funny because someone mentioned Shawn Lane, and what I learned from him was that playing IS all in the brain, once you learn sequenced coordinations you dont recall them with your fingers you recall them with your Brain, it doesnt take alot of hand movement!! just precision

  • damn cool !

  • in the dead of night!

    cool

  • Sounding great Terry! Nice changes...

  • Terry, you are THE MAN. I bought 'Shred is not dead' back in '01, and it was the one book which helped me SMASH through years and years of playing frustration. Keep the faith alive, and never stop shredding!

  • Great.

About your disease.... just keep playing man!

    ;)

  • Nice. sorry bout ur disease.

  • yeah i remember buying the "shred is not dead book" in 2002 and it was perhaps the only book that really helped me back then. with the shawn lane videos of course. keep it up terry. you still kick ass even with this damn dystonia...

  • Hey Terry!

Nice phrasing...just received Shred is not Dead DVD...great stuff, the intro groove is amazing...keep on shreding!

  • im extremely sorry to hear about your condition. youre an amazing musician and i pray they find a cure for that so you can continue to create masterpeices.

  • Terry is a fantastic player... Also in the situation he is in he makes everything look effortless. Fantastic job man... Saw an old Berklee clip of yours and then decided to hear more of your playing.... Fantastic man.

  • One word: Virtuoso

  • aum's pretty old...

  • terryyyyyyy see ya next yearrrr

  • wow!!! amazing!! very inspiring!!! pls make more videos

  • All those "Computer" notes are still notes. Shred guitarists have more in common with classical composers then most rock guitarists. This guy went to Berklee thats more then enough credit for someone to say they can play man, I'm sure this guys got tons of other mad chops he just like's to shred nothing wrong with that.

  • Awesome. Thanks for posting this. You sound amazing

  • i have your book and dvd, that was great!

  • Amazing!!! You are an inspiration!

  • robotic skills dude :)

  • 8^)

  • dude Terry its Andrew Jay wow man your such an inspiration to me and check my videos !!!!!!!

  • great to see u still at it

  • Terry Syrek is AWesome!! :D

  • I must admit I had heard of Terry on the internet and hadn't thought to check out his playing until today - but I'm glad that I did.

I have an injured fretting hand and while not degenerative its prevented me wanting to play guitar for years until I realised that you have to live every day as much as you can. Through the inspirational example of Terry and other's like him I hope to be making music again soon so please, keep posting Terry and thanks for the example you set.

  • dude...i hope they find a cure for your degenerative condition......you are an amazing guitarist and i would hate for you to lose that ability..peace man.

  • omg... your fucking amazing dude

i dont think its possible to ever get better than guys like you, broderick, and rusty cooley

  • never stop playing dude your fucking incredible

  • that tapping technique from 0:24 is amazing!!!!!!!!

  • this is insanely good! thanx for making the vid!

  • Great playing man! I took your class at NGW when I was like 15 or 16 (I'll turn 19 next month, so about three years ago) and it honestly took me out of guitar middle school and put me in, IDK, college or something. Keep rocking man!

  • Hi Terry, I also have focal dystonia in my left hand, you shouldn't be thinking that what you have is a degenerative condition that is getting worse day by day, If you find the correct path you can get better instead of worse. I actually got a little better, just send me a private message if you'd like to contact me. Great Playing!! Regards

  • your playing is incredible Terry,I was learning some of your licks on chops from hell this morning, hope your hand gets better

  • fun times at ngw....

    keep blazing those frets

  • Keep it up, Terry. You still sound better than most guitar players.

  • Hey Terry, I use your shred any chance I get!!! Thanks for the help!!

    Hope all is well!!

  • Terry, you taught me at Guitar Summer Camp in CT atleast six years ago. We played Money by Pink Floyd at the end. Hilarious. Still have your CD With Astronomy on it.

  • Yeah Terry, we know who you are... I was honestly devastated the moment I've heard you have problems with your arm... Such a composer and out-of-this-world guitarist... It sucks!

  • whats wrong with his arm?

  • As you could see here in comments, he has focal dystonia and losing control over his playing arm... Tragedy!!! This guy is so awesome player, 2 bad I don't know him in person, everybody says he's great!!!

  • thats terrible!

  • woo terry he was my guitar teacher!

  • Hy terry, i have focal hand dystonia too. it afeccted my right thumb and index fingers and the last two fingers of my left hand. i want to ask wich fingers do you have affected and how do you do to play as well as you do having focal hand dystonia. Please answer as soon as you can. i want to play guitar again.

  • sad for me to read this vbandres - hope it gets better

  • Sick shit Terry

  • terry i wonder if u can post guitar lessons ty

  • that would be awesome

  • cool vid terry , i was in ur 80s class a year ago at ngw. check out my vid if u want tell me what u think

  • That is the sickest technique EVAR!! No seriously, I would ask you to transcribe that, but I don't think I have enough paper. If you could give us a clue on that technique, Terry....that would be great! It looks like you're two-finger tappin sweep arpeggios!!

  • that's some insane playing!!! so clean. crazy for just improv

  • nice, Terry. I saw you 1st lask week at Gary's place.

Shred is never dead! hang in there. you are amazing.

    Debbie

  • Terry, so glad to see that you've put something up here. You are seriously the best guitarist I've ever encountered. I took your Shred Man Walking Seminar with James in 2005, one of the most fun weeks of my life. Though the best part was definitely prank calling Pat Martino using the Evil Clown Midget Exercise of Doom and James' clown cackling. I could've sworn you got that magical moment on video, but it never turned up online...

  • dude, i was in that class too! have to say i thought the greatest moment of that monumental week was the "john's taking a dump" tune, that was unbelievably funny

  • Yes, as I recall, James told us about how John was going to come back ten pounds lighter. And I just recalled the tale of 80s hair band Danger Danger and their hit song "Naughty Naughty." Haha.

Do you recall John taking a bite of pie that had been covered in all manner of condiments and describing the taste as "rotten pussy"?

  • Yo Terry! i just posted a bunch of Berklee SHREDFEST clips for the world to marvel over. see user sup1967. keep shredding man! GS

  • Terry I went to one of your NGW seminars a few years ago, I love your album AUM, and really hope that you keep playing through your focal dystonia, best wishes.

  • Hey Terry. I hope you can get some more stuff out there. The world needs your talent. Your books vids and cd roms havce taught me alot but your music is out of this world! We need to hear more. You can do more with ONE finger than most can do with thier entire hand.

  • god I missed you

  • I got your " Shred Is Not Dead" Dvd about 5 years ago and it blew me away! Keep in mind that was back when i use to think guitar players like Kirk Hammett and other mainstream band guitarist were the best.

But you really opened my eyes with that video. Thanks!

  • this needs so many more views.

  • i had the liberty of having this man as my guitar teacher for two years. he's an awesome guy.

  • nice man! i was at national guitar workshop this summer so i saw this guitar god live

  • cool playing

  • so Terry...you have any other instructional books and videos other than shred is not dead? Also, I know that this is probably a stupid question, but do you think playing an epiphone les paul inhibits learning some of the more advanced virtuoso rechniques?

  • smooth jesus is impressed

  • Shred on Terry!

    SHRED ON!!!!!

  • Terry is not just a metal god, he is a really great person. Rock on Terry!

  • did officially change to the clown "excercise"?,i thought it was noise. anyway, u should post it on here

  • yea!

  • terry is one of the best shreds of this era.

    keep on shred brother!!!

  • clown exercise!

  • Terry The God Syrek

  • Thanks so much, everyone! You guys are too kind, but i really appreciate it.

  • bravo! i have heard legends about you but i this is definitely proof that you are a true master.

  • Take notice people--this is one of the greats. Keep it coming brother!

  • just to say terry i think that u are a god on the guitar and all your lessons at ngw really helped me a lot on the guitar and you have given me so much inspiration because you can still throw down like o other on the guitar even with your hand condition.

  • Great work,

    That was amazing!

  • hi!!! i have ur dvd "Shred is not dead" and u have some really really good stuff in there! i was watching it a couple of minutes ago cuz i was practicigin guitar. but man, ur the bomb!! well, thanks for ur stuff and good luck!! make most of the music while u stilll can!!!!! =]]]]

  • You should make more videos because your awesome! And also the clown exercise, i don't know how its supposed to sound.

  • Terry I love your playing, I'm so sorry about your left hand conditions, I respect you very much because You always put your love for music over everything :-)

Greetings from Italy, maybe oneday I'll write you a letter :-)

  • Terry exactly wat k1ng92 said i second that... I was Zakk Waleko in ur class last week. and i've been showing all my friends ur cd. its amazing Keep Shredding

  • Terry, this video is amazing man.

You may remember me from your class this past week at NGW(better off shred). I'm cameron Kingsberry, the one who always asks about the clown excercise in class. I listened to your Aum CD on the drive home, and i am speechless. Please keep the amazing work coming, because that cd is one of the best I've ever heard.

  • lol wow! after my email to you im embarassed that I told you i had my first formal lesson! You are awesome good buddy!

  • Terry, I heard about your problem along time ago from our teacher Janflone SR. I think you might remember I entered Berklee on your last year back in 92'. I feel for you and It seems I have developed dystonia as well best to you long time knowing about this and hope we can get thru it.

    Ken

  • Oh my God! Is that the guy who has a problem with his left hand!!? My left is 100 percent perfect condition but I can't play like that, not even close!

It's very nice to see you here, Terry.

    Take care

  • Once again, it's awesome to come back here and see all the positive comments. Thanks so much! It means alot.

Highintel, thanks for the email and also for changing your opinion. The comment i made was an allusion to the comment David St. Hubbins (Spinal Tap) made in the Hear n Aid video, about Yngwie. i believe we were both joking. i actually think it's a good thing he uses the "J" to separate himself from all the other Yngwie Malmsteens.

And, Huggybear.. thanks for gettin my back, man. :)

  • No prob Terry! I was just jealous of the attention you have I guess...hehe! I should not make judgments like that.

    huggybear can stand down now...hehe

  • Terry, Even though It already is..may the force be with you. hope the ngw Is going well. awsome stuff. my friends and I loved it. peace out g, word to yo mamma, wessaiiid, waynes world...party time..excellent. Jordan

  • SORRY about your condition and for the cocky comment TERRY! I didn't know about that. But I did not like your attitude in your shred is not dead video when you mentioned our friend YNGWIE (sarcastic look) J Malmsteen's name. Maybe I just misread you or got defensive about it because I do know Yngwie to be a DICK Both times I met him as well as a million horror stories I have heard about him.

So, Sorry and Best of luck!

    HIGHINTEL

  • thats right u dirty girl u should appologize

    fred durst look alike

  • terry syrek is the god of metal i cant wait to see u for 80's hair today

  • Beautiful stuff, Terry, glad to see you're still doing your thing despite your condition! I've posted a link to the video and your myspace on my facebook page. So far all of my non-guitar nerd have loved your stuff, though a lot of people seem to find that bit you begin in the video around 1:05 a bit discordant.

Best of luck, keep on keepin' on!

  • Awesome video Terry that was some great Shred Fusion!!! Keep kicking ass man.

    Jake

  • Hey you're kind of good!! Do you give lessons?

    :)

Great to see you on Youtube Terry!! You are a huge inspiration and it's an honor taking lessons from you.

Bt the way...Screw focal dystonia.. You kick ass!!

    ~R~

  • omg terry.

    your fucking god.

    haha

  • Terry,

Great to see you play again. Keep the vids coming!

    Geoff

  • Terry,

Great stuff man! I was hoping you would post some videos sooner or later. Not only is Terry a terrific player, he is also a fantastic teacher and a good guy.

    Keep on rocking!

    Jorge

  • Thank you guys, so much for all the kind comments. i really appreciate them. i'll definitely try to do a few more and put them up.

Awesome to see some old friends and meet some new ones, too. Thanks for checking this vid out.

Any of you guys that wanted to get in touch or had questions, rather than us conversing here, please feel free to email me through youtube here, or myspace.

    Thanks!

  • Terry, its nice to see you play again (I've been spinning your tape, Obscura CD and Aum many times, but to witness your shredness visually is awesome!)

I'm actually making my way down to NGW this summer, doing the classical summit and competition...hope to run into you there!

    -Nick

  • Hey Terry its Scott from the past Saturday afternoon lessons and Ralph's friend.

It is good to see ya in action again as I always enjoyed just sitting back and watching you just let loose with some juggernaut run.

Not sure if I remember why we stopped setting up times but would love to do some stuff again in the near future.

  • Terry, i've seen your site, and you're a killer guitar player, musician and teacher. Thank you for your contribution to music so far - i believe that with your mind and passion you will never have to stop. One of my previous guitar teachers cut off some fingers - he learned the trombone and composed for brass band. I hope you can find another outlet for your love for music. My deepest sympathy and admiration goes out to you, and the best of luck. :)

  • I sometimes tell people about this demon of a guitar player who's seminar I attended a few times, and how terrifying it is to watch him play.

    Now they understand.

    rock on, Terry

  • Dude, you rule. That super heavy version of Temple of the absurd you did on the Becker tribute record kicks the ass of the world.

  • Hell you play better than people with 2 good hands!

I got your DVD , outstanding!love your humor -"you've got this whole guitar neck use it you paid for the whole thing" lol!

Oh I like the coment about the mesmerising sublimial guitar licks too heh heh

I only have one big problem with your videos-your too handsome. I'm trying to focus on your playing and its terribly distracting!!

  • Crazy, crazy, crazy! I've never seen you play before. Please post more.

  • Now... That's what I'm talkin'bout!

Insanity surrounded by parenthesis of taste... Ya gotta love that.

Mr.Syrek has a lot to say and the ability to say it with the use of 2 left hand fingers. Having perfect pitch doesn't hurt either.

Yea, but can he touch his nose with his tongue? Or....

May I suggest a better view of your ridiculous right hand in the next video??? That scary hybrid picking needs to bee scene bro.

    Do post more!

    Your friend,

    Harry Jacobson

  • Wow, that was awesome!!... Never seen or heard you play 'till now.

  • Amazing stuff, Terry! I'm so glad you finally decided to share your talents with the world. You've compensated so brilliantly for your hand condition. Not only does it look jaw-dropping to watch, if I were to close my eyes I'd never know the difference between your playing now and your playing as I knew it 18 or so years ago. You will always be a great musician and composer first and foremost - and a consumate player a close second. More please!

    Matt Williams (Liquid Note Records)

  • Terry sir... You continue to amaze me. It's been ages since I've watched you play but you sound just as great as ever! No matter what the dystonia does it hasn't altered your voice on the instrument and in saying that I can tell you have translated tons of phrases into two-handed techniques to boot. You are f%#king genius my friend. Post more videos. The world needs to know.

  • Hey Terry, it's DJ from NGW!I always check here to see if you have posted a vid! I tried to e-mail you at the address from the old website, but I guess it never took. After that I refused to enter MySpace! Seems like you really took the 2-handed multi-finger method to a new level. I don't remember you doing that much of it, but that was awhile ago. Anyway, it sounds great and I would post my address if it weren't for obvious implications. Hopefully you will respond here. Later.

  • out the ratings on for one vote! 6 stars!

  • Awesome. I am a fan of your music; I love it so much.

  • i decided, after much deliberation, to post a clip of me improvising. Not in some explosion of narcissism, mind you, but primarily because i have a degenerative condition called focal dystonia. It gradually robs me of the use of my left hand and i'd like to make as much music as i can and get it out there as i'm not sure what i'll be able to still do, year to year.

i love music so much, and guitar, that i've tried my best to adapt techniques to allow me to continue to express what i hear.

  • i came back to check my mail here and saw all these really nice comments. Guys, thanks so much. i don't expect everyone to like what i do nor do i fish for praise. i just like to play. But to have so much positivity in comment and email form just makes me wanna have a giant group hug, haha.

The internet is full of ppl that have nothing better to do than trash talk because of their own insecurities. i am humbled and thankful that only awesome ppl have found their way here.

    Thanks so much.
