wow....i was shocked to find out about your condition man. I went to NGSW in the mid 90's... I still go the papers with exercises that you gave us. I just saw a video from jeff mcerlain here and thought...hey i guess terry should have something here... and this was the first that came. I have great memories from your classes. You, along with McErlain and Andy Timmons inspired me in those summers to keep getting better in music.

I wonder if there is the Taubman Golandsky method of recovery from dystonia for guitarist. I know it works for piano & violin. Now they use the principals for typing injuries also.
Badi assad(the brazilian guitarist) had focal dystonia and made a full recovery, they usually treat the symptoms of the disease with Botox believe it or not. its a neurological I believe so its all in the brain, which is real funny because someone mentioned Shawn Lane, and what I learned from him was that playing IS all in the brain, once you learn sequenced coordinations you dont recall them with your fingers you recall them with your Brain, it doesnt take alot of hand movement!! just precision

yeah i remember buying the "shred is not dead book" in 2002 and it was perhaps the only book that really helped me back then. with the shawn lane videos of course. keep it up terry. you still kick ass even with this damn dystonia...

cool dude, still ripping but hey my opinion is, based on what you said "making music" you still have plenty of it left in you man. All that bluiponing bluiponing bluiponing bluiponing , finger tapping computer sounding "annoying" scaling is not music its just fast guitar playing and cool. Music is so much harder to do, but like I said you have plenty of talent and ability left in you for music. All those "Computer" notes are still notes. Shred guitarists have more in common with classical composers then most rock guitarists. This guy went to Berklee thats more then enough credit for someone to say they can play man, I'm sure this guys got tons of other mad chops he just like's to shred nothing wrong with that.

You're absolutely right! But I was reaching out to him, just stating my opinion. Given his situation I think he should not put too much effort and time in to basically doodling. Now is the time to make a mark and have something to look back on. I think looking back on this in 20 years would be like playing your 5th grade talent show tape. Too be blunt, stop fuckin around and get to work.
I must admit I had heard of Terry on the internet and hadn't thought to check out his playing until today - but I'm glad that I did.
I have an injured fretting hand and while not degenerative its prevented me wanting to play guitar for years until I realised that you have to live every day as much as you can. Through the inspirational example of Terry and other's like him I hope to be making music again soon so please, keep posting Terry and thanks for the example you set.

Great playing man! I took your class at NGW when I was like 15 or 16 (I'll turn 19 next month, so about three years ago) and it honestly took me out of guitar middle school and put me in, IDK, college or something. Keep rocking man!
Hi Terry, I also have focal dystonia in my left hand, you shouldn't be thinking that what you have is a degenerative condition that is getting worse day by day, If you find the correct path you can get better instead of worse. Hy terry, i have focal hand dystonia too. it afeccted my right thumb and index fingers and the last two fingers of my left hand. i want to ask wich fingers do you have affected and how do you do to play as well as you do having focal hand dystonia. Please answer as soon as you can. i want to play guitar again.

I took your Shred Man Walking Seminar with James in 2005, one of the most fun weeks of my life. Maybe I just misread you or got defensive about it because I do know Yngwie to be a DICK Both times I met him as well as a million horror stories I have heard about him.

i decided, after much deliberation, to post a clip of me improvising. Not in some explosion of narcissism, mind you, but primarily because i have a degenerative condition called focal dystonia. It gradually robs me of the use of my left hand and i'd like to make as much music as i can and get it out there as i'm not sure what i'll be able to still do, year to year.
i love music so much, and guitar, that i've tried my best to adapt techniques to allow me to continue to express what i hear.
i came back to check my mail here and saw all these really nice comments. Guys, thanks so much. i don't expect everyone to like what i do nor do i fish for praise. i just like to play. But to have so much positivity in comment and email form just makes me wanna have a giant group hug, haha.

I must admit I had heard of Terry on the internet and hadn't thought to check out his playing until today - but I'm glad that I did.
I have an injured fretting hand and while not degenerative its prevented me wanting to play guitar for years until I realised that you have to live every day as much as you can. Through the inspirational example of Terry and other's like him I hope to be making music again soon so please, keep posting Terry and thanks for the example you set.

Great playing man! I took your class at NGW when I was like 15 or 16 (I'll turn 19 next month, so about three years ago) and it honestly took me out of guitar middle school and put me in, IDK, college or something. Keep rocking man!

Hi Terry, I also have focal dystonia in my left hand, you shouldn't be thinking that what you have is a degenerative condition that is getting worse day by day, If you find the correct path you can get better instead of worse. Hy terry, i have focal hand dystonia too. it afeccted my right thumb and index fingers and the last two fingers of my left hand. i want to ask wich fingers do you have affected and how do you do to play as well as you do having focal hand dystonia. Please answer as soon as you can. i want to play guitar again.

Terry, so glad to see that you've put something up here. You are seriously the best guitarist I've ever encountered. I took your Shred Man Walking Seminar with James in 2005, one of the most fun weeks of my life. Though the best part was definitely prank calling Pat Martino using the Evil Clown Midget Exercise of Doom and James' clown cackling. I could've sworn you got that magical moment on video, but it never turned up online...

Yes, as I recall, James told us about how John was going to come back ten pounds lighter. And I just recalled the tale of 80s hair band Danger Danger and their hit song "Naughty Naughty." Haha.

I got your " Shred Is Not Dead" Dvd about 5 years ago and it blew me away! Keep in mind that was back when i use to think guitar players like Kirk Hammett and other mainstream band guitarist were the best.

Terry, I heard about your problem along time ago from our teacher Janflone SR. I think you might remember I entered Berklee on your last year back in 92'. I feel for you and It seems I have developed dystonia as well best to you long time knowing about this and hope we can get thru it.

The comment i made was an allusion to the comment David St. Hubbins (Spinal Tap) made in the Hear n Aid video, about Yngwie. i believe we were both joking. i actually think it's a good thing he uses the "J" to separate himself from all the other Yngwie Malmsteens.

SORRY about your condition and for the cocky comment TERRY! I didn't know about that. But I did not like your attitude in your shred is not dead video when you mentioned our friend YNGWIE (sarcastic look) J Malmsteen's name. Maybe I just misread you or got defensive about it because I do know Yngwie to be a DICK Both times I met him as well as a million horror stories I have heard about him.

Terry, i've seen your site, and you're a killer guitar player, musician and teacher. Thank you for your contribution to music so far - i believe that with your mind and passion you will never have to stop. One of my previous guitar teachers cut off some fingers - he learned the trombone and composed for brass band. I hope you can find another outlet for your love for music. My deepest sympathy and admiration goes out to you, and the best of luck. :)

Amazing stuff, Terry! I'm so glad you finally decided to share your talents with the world. You've compensated so brilliantly for your hand condition. Not only does it look jaw-dropping to watch, if I were to close my eyes I'd never know the difference between your playing now and your playing as I knew it 18 or so years ago. No matter what the dystonia does it hasn't altered your voice on the instrument and in saying that I can tell you have translated tons of phrases into two-handed techniques to boot. i decided, after much deliberation, to post a clip of me improvising. Not in some explosion of narcissism, mind you, but primarily because i have a degenerative condition called focal dystonia. It gradually robs me of the use of my left hand and i'd like to make as much music as i can and get it out there as i'm not sure what i'll be able to still do, year to year.
i love music so much, and guitar, that i've tried my best to adapt techniques to allow me to continue to express what i hear.
