Otherwise excellent analysis is marred by the generally incisive Paul Jay's rather banal remark about neocons ostensible 'global' agenda. Their scope may be global, but their agenda is very much regional -- it is centered on Israel's regional hegemony, as Pepe correctly points out. They desire global conflict only so Israel can be potrayed as a 'strategic asset', rather than liability it actually is, in order to justify dole from the US taxpayer. What has US got to gain from fighting Hamas?
The agenda is quite global. Everything is done to protect the dollar as the world reserve currency to continue borrowing from the world for our growth. Israel is a piece of the puzzle. They provide us two purposes: As the only true military power in the Middle East, they suppress "rogue states", haven defeated them combined 3 times. As a perceived victim they provide the US and excuse to intervene there to ensure oil countries sell their oil in dollars to create demand for the dollar.
I always love fact-free, faith-based analysis. So Iraq was invaded to protect the dollar? May I ask what's the evidence you base this conclusion on? Don't tell me its because Iraq decided to sell in Euros. You know where the money from the Oil-for-Food program went? And you might also want to explain why the people who led the charge against Iraq were making the same demands back in '96 when Iraq was still 4 years away from making that move? Also, why hasn't Venezuela been invaded yet?
After Iran was crippled in the 80-88 war, Saddam was grooming Iraq to be the new regional power, which the US could not accept, wanting only puppets like Saudi Arabia and pre-79 Iran. Immediately after the war, the US shifted its pro-Iraq position, portraying to the public that Saddam had used chemical weapons against the Kurds, placed sanctions and baited him to attack Kuwait to prep for war. After the war the program was set up to suppress Saddam militarily, but still benefit from his oil.
During the UN monitored disarming program, Saddam resisted, noting the US embedding spies in with the monitors, which was confirmed by the UN. Saddam started to be aware of US plan to disarm Iraq (removing its ability to become a regional power) while controlling and profiting from its oil right up until the 2003 war. Noting this, in retaliation he switch oil sales to Euros, which encourage other OPEC countries to consider the change, threatening the dollar as the world reserve currency.
In 2000, Foreign dollar holders stated to diversify out of dollar holdings, which means US corporations started losing foreign investment and the Govt was losing its ability to deficit spend and borrow from the world, which keeps interest rates low, and allows Govt to spend without having to tax heavily. When Iraq switch to Euros, The US was forced to produced to trade with Europe to acquire Euros to buy oil from Iraq. Having lost many jobs overseas, this is very difficult. Saddam had to go.
Re: Israel's utility for the US, yeah I know what AIPAC says. Do you have any views of your own? Maybe no one told you about the last two wars Israel fought with 'rogue states', or perhaps you slept through Israel two retreats from Lebanon in 2000 and 2006. If the main US interest in the region is to protect its economic interests, don't you think its a rather curious way to go about it by antagonizing all regional partners by aiding the state they all resent? Ever heard of the Israel lobby?
No, I didn't forget. Notice I said "the agenda" of the US and Israel. The Iraq war and Lebanon Conflict were suppose to be cake walks with further goals of Iran and Syria. In both instances, like Vietnam, the US and Israel caused far more casualties than inflicted, but strategic goals of quick conflicts and international support failed. The intent of antagonizing is to create the excuse and get support, believing they could contain the consequences quickly. They failed. The agenda still remains.
The only great political figure to come from Alaska was Mike Gravel. If the USA Had him as President it could be the respected nation again it once was before the Bush administration destroyed it's credibility all over the world.
you should be MORE embarrassed of him because of his blind allegiance to israel, instead of the country which gives him his paycheck, for christ's sake.
I don't think it's possible to be any more embarrassed of him. He -like most of the rest in government; including those in the White House, the Senate, and Congress...all need to be tried for treason.
LOL .. who cares what Lieberman thinks or says ... He was ran as the VP for the Dems and later he lost his own seat . He refused to accept that vote of the Dems and removed himself from the party he was SO HIGH up in to become an independent. Now hes a republican ??? This guy is the ULTIMATE flip flopper. He has lost ALL credibility . A Turn coat
Mccain is a militaristic zionist. He pledged unconditional support for Israel at AIPAC which means putting Israels interests above american interests. Count on future american wars against Israels enemies if he gets in.
Lieberman has always been a zionist, he made no secret of it.
