Love the job you did on this small back pack. Curious is the ripstop nylon the silnylon (sp), I would love to know where you got your materials... I know Im going to have to send off for what ever I do use. Any instructions you would like to share I would love to hear. Im just starting the journey of making my own gear. I would like to see a few more fishing videos... any tricks of the trade so to speak.. They dont jump on my line like they do yours. LOL
Great pack, great idea. One thing I noticed that could be an improvement is a chest buckle, it's a bit more important than the belt one as it keeps the pack weight resting on your chest instead of your shoulders making things much more comfortable.
Great Video, your quite skilled. I was wondering if you have thought of an attached rain cover that could be pulled from a small pouch (Built into the pack) to cover your gear & pack when out in the wilderness?...also, it would prevent dampness from invading the pack when not used through the night. I just thought I would pass the idea along...Oh, and maybe a "D-ring" to hoist it into the air to double as a bear bag!
hey brother- thank you immensely for the extremely well thought out kit ideas/suggestions. i absolutely love your DIY "common man" approach to setups. genius!. you have given me so so many ideas. i aint preaching, so please dont bash me, but i dont eat fish and stuff (minus survival scenario). any suggestions on uber lightweight meals/snacks/etc.... ive got alot, but you most likely have some stuff i havent thought about. you are a true inspiration. thanks my man! peace to you.
Have you thought of using a plastic flexible cutting mat for a stiffener in the back. I have had packs with something similar. If you made a pocket to hold it you could then take it out and use it in camp for its intended purpose.
@intenseangler I thought so. As long as you use a drop or two of bleach to sanitize and deodorize it I think it would be a multi-task item. Especially deodorizing after processing fish and so as not to be attractive to critters.
@kycanoecamper Definitely. I'm actually working on getting a video demo put together... as soon as it's done I'll make sure to send you the link. I think your idea of putting some webbing attachments on the bottom is an excellent one... I may need to add some myself. Best to ya!
Very cool pack, I'm going to have to try to make one myself if my wife will let me use her sewing machine.... Actually I may end up having to buy one from you, I broke her sewing machine the last time I used it & got banned from even looking at it let alone use it. What would you charge for building one?
So you got banned from the ol' sewing machine huh? lol. I actually broke the first one that I used when I was learning how to sew, so I know how that goes man. What do ya do though, eh? If you are really wanting one of these packs, send me a PM and we can figure something out. Thanks again!
@intenseangler Yeah, banned for life. I found another machine at a yard sale this morning so I'm gonna give it a shot. I'll PM you if (when) I break this one.
John I would love to see how you put the pack together. I have the ultralight bug and want to make my own stuff. I think your DIY stuff is great. The money savings are pretty incredible. You can take the money you saved and make other stuff and you know how well it is made. Great video. Excellent pack.
Hi John, This is absolutely amazing. I have been watching this video over and over and just can't get over how perfect this pack turned out. You have combined all the featured I look for and left out the feature so many have; +$150... : ) I love the size, the ample water bottle pockets, the side straps, the weight, the color, everything! Fantastic work my friend, I bet If Nessmuk were still with us, he would be singing your praise and knocking at your door. : )
Man that's killer dude! Almost as lite as the Cuben Fiber pack! WOW! Your sewing skills are lookin' good buddy! I could never make that in a million years...haha! You could say I don't have the sewing skills required for that...hehe! I'd just buy one :o))) I'm much more mechanically inclined than the sewing type :o) Looks like great work there Mr. ultralite :o)
@Ggreenvideos Thanks Brother! Those Cuben fiber packs are VERY light huh! (personally I don't think I could handle the "crunchy" sound all day though lol). If ya ever decide to go lighter (say old age or something haha) then I'd be glad to throw one together for ya buddy :-)
@intenseangler Old age?...hehe! I think that's already happened bro...haha! Everything is cool here man. Just been busy :o) Raining almost everday is getting on my nerves though. Since July it's been the real shits for the most part :o( It's one of those years I guess!
What a great project that anyone can do. Thanks for showing the way once more. You're going to put all those cottage industries out of business, lol. // I noticed right off the wide straps. That's what my little yellow pack has. It certainly is way more comfortable with them. And that top flap, over the drawstring closer will serve you well. You can keep clothing or other items underneath it, even your tent, if fall and winter dictates you bring more gear. Good feature. You did good here, John.
@rainbowhiker Thanks John, I really appreciate the kind words my friend :-)
Your little nylon pack was actually part of the inspiration for this little project, so thanks! When I heard you say it only weighed 11oz it got me thinking that I needed a MUCH lighter full size pack than any I had. Good ideas on utilizing the flap for more storage room... that would really help free up space in the pack when cooler weather hits! Thanks again buddy and I hope all's well over your way :-)

@rainbowhiker Awesome John!! I can't wait to hear about (or better yet, see) the finished product! I don't know about you, but there is such a sense of satisfaction that comes with using a piece of gear that you made with your own two hands that makes any effort well worth it! Hope yours goes smoother than mine did ;-)
@intenseangler I just knocked off from working on it all day. Twice I sewed sheets of fabric together that shouldn't have been. I haven't made any design mistakes, just dumb ones like sewing a side to the same side. Duh! // Got one shoulder strap attached. I'm figuring things out as I go, so it'll take a while till its finished. Couldn't find any packs I could rob some big straps from so I'm using some I have on hand. It'll be way different than yours. I have no idea of the weight. Maybe, 2 lbs?
Looks good John. Can’t beat the weight of the pack and the construction of the seams look bomb proof. For a daypack or an ultralight overnighter it should be great although I do think I would have made the top flap larger. My lightweight (at least I used to think it was lightweight) Marmot Alpha 25 daypack weighs in at 2#-1oz and your pack has more room!
@Woodenarrows Thanks my friend! Yeah, this one came together pretty well... I guess practice makes perfect huh? (or at least better lol). I agree on the flap... I thought it would conform better this way, but it ended up being too small and bunching up... oh well, easy fix :-)
@GunsKnivesSurvival Thanks Bro. I've been toying with the idea of doing a "sewing 101 for outdoorsmen" vid... just not quite sure how to make it more tactical LOL. Any ideas would help ;-)
The shotgun case sounds like a killer DIY project! My brother made a case for my dad's old .243 years ago and it's still his favorite :-)

Dude, hope you know I love your videos, very good one this time, great pack. You have some great ideas and projects. Would hope you consider me a friend as I do you. Thanks so much for your videos really enjoy them. Take care buddy and have great day.
@ewtoutdoors Thanks so much Ed, I really appreciate your kind compliments! I certainly do count you as a friend without a doubt buddy! I could tell what kind of guy you were right off by the way that you support the kid's channels... definitely a good man! I hope all is well over your way... best to ya!
I would like to know when you start selling the stuff because your ideas are great. Keep up the good work. I need to drive up to Boise so we can go do some fishing. I am just down in Salt Lake.
@badvoodoodaddy1 Hey Bro! It's good to hear from ya! Hope things have been good down your way. Thanks for the compliment man, I really appreciate it! As far as fishing goes... any time buddy! Maybe as soon as this weather cools down just a bit we can get out and wet some lines :-)
@RichTheRidgeHunter Hmm... might be a slight problem with that. My business model is all wrong lol... my "marketing strategy" thus far has been to tell people the virtues of making their own gear and that there's no need to spend alot of cash... hmm, maybe if I sold 'em for $9.99 eh? ;-)
@intenseangler Noooo! You *cannot* sell these for $9.99 each! I sew a lot, and believe me, your time is worth more than 50 cents an hour!!! Besides, your time is better spent on introducing and/or sharing more new ideas and tips for equipment. Walk away from the sewing machine, John... Pick up the video camera... That's right! ;-) Great pack and excellent video!
Great job. I'm considering making my own hydration pack. The ones I like cost too much, IMO & I've got all the materials to do it . Just got to find the spare time.
You must feel very pleased with yourself and have some good sewing skills.Going light is right. My back is no longer up to the heavier pack loads for long trips.
@g0vqw Thank you very much Sandy! I was really happy with the way this one turned out... hopefully I get alot of use out of it! This lightweight thing has been a really fun adventure so far... I've noticed that not am I only less tired & sore, but I feel ALOT more in touch with everything around me... as it should be huh? :-)
Good ideas. I've been experimenting with similar concepts such as a smaller backpack used for lighter bulkier items combined with a waistpack worn over the belly with numerous pouches for heavier items. I also wear pants with multiple pockets. I'm also thinking about experimenting with legpacks. Going a bit lighter and dispersing the heavier gear makes for a more comfortable trek... @cyclist01222 Thanks a bunch friend! I really like your ideas of utilizing different places for carrying gear, other than just in your pack. I use a waist pack alot of the time as well... it really helps to have easy access to things you need on the trail. I even thought about including a detachable waist pack to this project... hmm, I may still have to do that. By the way, I've never heard of legpacks... sounds very interesting. Would you mind sending any info on those? Thanks again!
@intenseangler I believe I've seen a few improvised legbags on the tube... don't remember if this was their original use. Not my original thought though... I remember legbags used by paratroopers jumping on D-day and there have been different variations used by military throughout the years. I'm envisioning something slim and close fitting that hangs from the belt and straps around the leg so as not to cause sway and catch on obstacles. Or something integrated to the pants. Still thinking on it.
@tekknorat Hmm... good question. Probably never LOL. Even if I wanted to, I kind of set myself up for profit failure due to my always talking about people not needing to pay alot for gear, haha ;-)
Thanks for the great comment and compliment Brother!
@intenseangler I was hoping :( Nah, just kidding. I understand Your point, it's way more interesting to make own stuff, just get the materials and use imagination and you come up with gear you are happy with. It's like "you give a fishing rod, let the man catch the fish himself". It's great to watch Your projects, gives a lot of ideas. Keep them coming Bro.

Hey, that's a great DIY pack for sure, master of the sewing machine! :o)
It's so light, wowo ... so now you can pack in some real heavy, long blades, canned food and some huge filming gear!
