Free verse? Any damn fool can write that, and most of it is mediocre, anyway. Rhyme scheme? Much more difficult, and has the beauty of cadence accompanying imagery.

One of my favorite poems by one of my favorite poets. I heard him read this at Rackham Auditorium in Ann Arbor back when Hotel Insomnia first came out--or was it before the publication of the book? Well, it was around the The World Doesn't End/Hotel Insomnia period. Since I spent much of my time with my nose in battered 2nd-hand copies of Henry Vaughan and Sir Thomas Browne and other old birds, I identified. After the reading I went to the party for Simic. I flattered and bored him. He was kind.
